Should minimum wage be raised?

Dayen, David. "A Higher Minimum Wage Won't Bankrupt Businesses." Los Angeles Times, 07

Jan, 2018, pp. A.18, SIRS Issues Researcher, https://sks.sirs.com.

This newspaper article talks about raising the minimum wage to help workers provide the

things they need as the cost of living increases. The cost of living is continuously

increasing over the year and so should the minimum wage. Those whom are paid the

minimum find it hard to buy even the basic of things and or forced to shop at extreme

discount store.

This is a good resource because it says that increase the minimum wage won’t bankrupt

business . This related to the topic of the president decreases the amount of taxes that

businesses have to pay in order to pay their workers more. Decreasing the tax pay does

not mean that business will pay their workers and will eventually lead to a decrease in

available jobs in certain workforces.

This newspaper article explains the alternative option of getting better pay in New York.

There are about 1,500 workers who have pledged to contribute $13.50 a month towards

this nonprofit/nonunion organization. The organization pushes for not only higher pay but

for other issues too. Things like affordable housing, immigration reform, better police-

community relations and improvements to New York's subway system.

In relevance to the importance of this resources is shown that there is more options and

ways to help those who fight for what the want. Unions can only help but so much

because there isn’t enough funding put into them. This connects to how there is a larger

issues on workers being paid minimum wage. There are too many large businesses and

companies who pay their workers the bare minimum because they are so money hungry.

Lanzinger, Irene. "Fair Wages are Critical to a Strong Economy." Vancouver Sun, 25 Nov, 2017,

pp. G.2, SIRS Issues Researcher,https://sks.sirs.com.

This newspaper article talks about how minimum wages is just that, the minimum. There

was a campaign that started about three years ago called the Fight For 15. There are too

many full time adult workers living under the poverty line. People who work for

minimum wage struggle to even get to work due to lack of transportation. As the cost of

living rises many workers are left trying to make ends meets.

This relates to the topic because you can’t expect to grow a strong economy when there

are people who who struggle making minimum wage. Creating a fair minimum wage

would give those people a chance to progress along with everybody else making suitiable

money. The minimum wage isn’t fair to those who need it most and to the economy.

The United States is considered one of the wealthier countries in the world and hasn’t

raised its minimum wage since 2009. The Minimum wage was higher in 1968 based on

the past value of an american dollar. The U.S is the only country with a low minimum

wage amongst other wealthier countries.

Wages have been raised higher than they have in the past for those members in unions.

On average the wages for workers without a high school diploma has raised by 1.9

percent. Those on the bottom 10 percent of the income ladder have seen a 5 percent

increase in their wages. Workers that fall at the end of the wage scale is only now starting

recover from the great recession of 2007. With baby boomers retiring soon those working

will see a good increase.

In the past few years democrats have came to an agreement to push the national

minimum wage to $10.10 from $7.25. Along came the movement of the fight for $15

which has succeeded in some states but other feel it’s too high. Every state has a different

cost of living and setting a national $15 wage would been unnecessary. It was proposed

that the national wage should be tiered and basic off the rate of how fast their economy is

growing.
