Sasser appointed new mayor of Mossyrock

Mossyrock City Council
members appointed council
member Randall Sasser as the
new mayor at their regular meet-
ing held last Thursday. Sasser
is replacing Tom Meade, who
is resigning as mayor effective
Dec. 31. The new mayor will
be sworn in and assume his of-
ficial duties in January. He will
then serve until the next general
election in November 2018. If
Sasser chooses to run for the
mayor position, he can file for
candidacy in May 2018 and be
placed on the Nov. ballot.
Once Sasser becomes mayor,
his council seat will be vacant
until a replacement can be ap-

The Pet Friends of East Lew-
is County, formerly Randle Pet
Ministry, is selling See’s candy
as a holiday fundraiser. Boxes
of assorted chocolate candy and
peanut brittle are available by

All proceeds will benefit the
spaying and neutering of East
Lewis County (ELC) pets. To
date, the organization has facili-
tated the spaying and neutering
of over 600 ELC pets.

Lewis County to seek local bids for vehicles

Action needed to purchase 16
vehicles in 2018 was approved by
the Lewis County Board of County
Commissioners (BOCC) on Mon-
day at the final hearing for the
BOCC in 2017.
Three calls for bids will be is-
sued based on the Public Works De-
partment Fleet Services Division’s
determination that 16 county-owned
vehicles are in need of replacement.
The county is looking to replace
seven pickup trucks, three SUVs
and six patrol cars for the Lewis
County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO).
At an earlier meeting, Public
Works Director Erik Martin said
the call for bids would give ev-
eryone, including Van Cleve Ford
in Morton and I-5 Auto Group in
Chehalis, a chance to bid.
“We put the call out for bids
to give local dealerships here in
Lewis County an opportunity to
put out bids for these vehicles,”
Martin said.
Bids are due by Jan. 4, 2018.

noted. Meade also said security
cameras are being installed in
the park.

Godfrey Road.
Meade announced the recent
2015 city audit by the state was
clean with no findings or letters.
The results of that audit, along
with the investigating report of
the fraud event that was discov-
ered last year, are posted on the
Washington State Auditor’s In-
ternet website, he said.

Council
okays
budget

The plan to move the Morton
Visitor Center (MVC) currently
located at 194 Main Ave. on the
grounds of the Interpretive Center
and Historic Train Depot to the Old
Settlers Museum (OSM) at Gust
Backstrom Park was once again a
topic of discussion at the Public
Hearing of the Morton City Coun-
cil on Monday.
The purpose of Monday’s pub-
lic hearing was the 2nd reading of
the 2018 proposed Morton city
budget of $1,955,571.
The discussion was a result of
Councilwoman Amanda West’s
questions regarding the cost to
bring the OSM up to the code nec-
essary to function as the MVC.
West pointed out that funds needed
for repairs and/or ADA accessibil-
ity were not included in the budget.
Although Mayor Dan
Mortensen and Councilman Rich-
ard Vanderlip had reported that
their walk-through of the build-
ing did not reveal a need for major
renovations, West questioned what
improvements would need to be
made before the new MVC opened
in 2018.
“I want to make sure that the
building is up to code,” West said.
Vanderlip, acting as Mayor Pro
Tem, pointed out that the OSM
has been opened to the public in
the past. “There is no trigger that
would mandate a new inspection,”
Vanderlip said.
Since the current proposed bud-
get does not cover any renovation
costs to the OSM, it was noted
that the budget would have to be

Hearings set
Two hearings were set to take
public comment regarding pro-
posed lease agreement renewals
between Lewis County and the
Solid Waste Disposal District #1
for the Morton Transfer Station
and the Central Transfer Station in
Centralia. The current agreements
will expire on Dec. 31, 2017. The
hearings are scheduled for Jan.
22, 2018, at 10 a.m. immediately
following the BOCC hearing.

James Levon Blanken-
ship was born March 29,
1950 in Morton, Wash. to
Levon and Blanche Blan-
kenship. They both pre-
ceded him in death and
are now embracing him in
heaven.
James passed away on
Dec. 3, 2017.
James worked for

ished wife of 38 years,
Cristine Joy Blankenship,
his daughter Karen (Jake),
his son Mike (Melody),
his grandchildren, Dayna
(Jenny), Jasmine (Sean),
Evan and Ryland and great
grandson Aiden, his sis-
ters Louise and Laurie, his
brothers Larry and Rod and
many nieces and nephews.
James had a love for
music beginning in his ear-
ly years, playing in bands
for many years brought
him much joy.

On November 29th the
Mossyrock School District
put on a college and career
fair. They invited different
colleges and employers
to share what they’re all
about, opportunities they
provide, and any informa-
tion that explains what the
career or college is looking
for. The purpose of this
event is to have students
become familiar with
the careers, colleges, and
universities that are avail-
able to them and use these
resources for their future.
Students were able to ask
questions, talk about their
plans for the future, and
make contacts. Some of the
colleges that were featured
were: Saint Martin’s Uni-
versity, Washington State
University, and Lower Co-
lumbia College. Also, some
of the careers/employers
that participated were:
Dental hygienist, human
resources (Morton Gen-
eral Hospital), Hampton
Lumber Mill, Alta, Depart-
ment of Natural Resources,
Lewis County Sheriff,
State Patrol, lab/radiology,
chiropractor, as well as the
armed forces (Marines, Air

Advanced Biology
In Mr. Voelker’s ad-
vanced biology class, stu-
dents dissected a salmon.
At first, students learned
about the salmon’s anato-
my and life cycle. During
the dissection, students
identified and removed the
salmon’s gills, eggs (if it
was a female), swim blad-
der, liver, and kidney. Each
group of students had fun
learning about and dissect-
ing the fish, but the smell
was a bit overwhelming to

On December 1st the
Mossyrock Elementary
went to the 59th annual
Look-A-Rama put on
by the Mossyrock Gar-
den Club. The proceeds
from this event goes to
Mossyrock High School
The Junior High girls’ basketball team had a suc-
cessful season. The varsity squad only lost one game
all season and came out with the best record in their
league. The JV squad topped all of their opponents and
went undefeated this season. Congratulations to all the
players and a job well done by coaches Jason Cole and
Heather Davis!
