How to Make a Lampshade on Fusion 360

By Adnan Mustavi

1. The first step is to create a basic shape for the “radius” of the lamp shade. Basically, it is
the general shape of a 1 degree slice of the lamp. To do this, go to the sketch menu,
choose “create sketch”, and select one of the vertical planes (faces) of the cube. Then
select the line tool, and make a straight, vertical line. Make the line 135mm, using either
the dimension tool (D) or from the beginning. Then make two small lines perpendicularly
extending from the large line at the top and bottom. The top one should be 23.4mm, and
the bottom line should be 45-47.5mm. Then you have to connect the two free ends of the
two lines. To do this, go to the sketch menu and choose the spline tool. When you are
making the line, make sure to add a control point between the two lines by simply
clicking once. You should have three points in the end. Press the green checkmark to exit
spline mode. If you click on the curved line now, you will be able to readjust the shape.
Try to make it similar to the shape in the diagram given. In the end, your shape should
look like this. Press Q to go exit the sketch.

2. Then to create the cylindrical shape, we must revolve it. To do that, go to the create
menu and click revolve. For the profile, click the shape, and for the axis, click the the
longest straight side. Type should be angle, and angle should be 360 degrees. After
specifying, click OK. Your 3d shape should look similar to the following:
3. Next we will create caps on the top and bottom. To do this, type S, and then “offset
plane.”Click on the circle on the top, and offset it by -8mm. To actually split it, go to the
modify menu, and click split, and then click the orange plane you created, and then click
OK. You should now have two pieces.

4. On the side menu, click on bodies, and click on the light bulb beside the first body to
remove it for now so that you can work on the upper cap. We want to create a hole
through the middle, so select create sketch, and select the top face. Press S, and find a
center-diameter-circle. Click it, and then click the center of the circle. Create a circle, and
make the diameter 42mm. Choose stop sketch, and then extrude it. To do so, go to create
menu, then to extrude. On the menu on the right side, change the extent to “to object”,
and select the bottom face of the cap. That should create a gap all the way through.
5. Next, hide cap and show the body. We want to make it hollow, so we type S, and choose
shell. Choose the top face, and rotate to the bottom. Then hold ctrl and select the bottom
face. Let go of ctrl, and make the thickness 1.6mm. Press OK, and that will give you a
hollow body.

6. Next, create a ring (cap) for the bottom the same way for the top. To do this, flip the body
so it is on the top, and repeat steps 3 and 4. Now we have caps on both the bottom and
the top.

7. Next, hide the rings, click create sketch, and select one of the planes that runs through the
middle of the part. Then under the sketch menu, choose project, and on the menu, change
the selection to bodies, click the body, and press OK. Then hide the body. You can now
work on the body pattern. Using the lines and the dimension tools, create a line pattern
that is similar to the pattern in the diagram below.
8. Click stop sketch, and bring only the middle body back. Next, click extrude, and choose
the tiny streak (the line in the middle of the sketch). Drag it all the way through the body,
and change the direction in the menu to “symmetric”. Also change the operation to
“intersect”. Then click OK. That should leave you with two floating strips.

9. Next from the create menu, click the pattern icon, and then circular pattern. On the right
side menu, change the pattern to bodies. For object, select one of the strips, and select the
vertical axis for the axis option. Then change the quantity to either 20 or 22. You should
now have a spiral pattern going in one direction. Now, find the strip within the spiral that
is going towards the opposite direction, and do the same thing. Select the strip, and select
the vertical axis for the axis option. Then change the quantity to either 20 or 22. You
should now have a spiral pattern going in two directions. Finally bring back the two rings
by clicking the light bulb beside them on the right side. Your final product should look
like this (next page):
10. And you are done. You can now save it as an STL file by right clicking the name of the
object, and saving it as an STL file.
