A SAMPLE ESSAY OF CAUSES and EFFECTS

Prompt: Today students are asked to do a lot of homework. What are the reasons
for that and what effects does it cause?

Many children today have to spend hours every evening doing homework. Some people seem to
believe that this will help the children in their academic career. Others feel that homework is
mostly useless. This essay will examine the reasons for homework and discuss its effects on
student learning.

Many people see a strong need for homework. First of all, many teachers believe that students
need to practice the new material learned in school. Homework can help students to find out
how well they understand the new information and ideas. Another reason for homework is to
help the teacher to discover what the students have or have not learned. This will allow the
teacher to develop new lessons or to help weaker students. Justification for homework is that it
involves parents in the education of the child. Family members can encourage the child and see
his or her progress.

Too often, however, homework has negative effects. Many teachers give too much homework,
and often teachers do not coordinate the quantity given. The children do not have free time to
relax or play sports. A further consequence is that unnecessary assignments can raise the stress
level of the student. This can lead to lower productivity and performance, instead of higher
grades. However, the most common effect of homework is boredom! The students learn nothing
new, and the teachers just give it because they are expected to.

In conclusion, the issue to give homework must be considered carefully. While there are some
good reasons for it, students and teachers need to approach sensibly. In my opinion, finding the
balance between free time and homework will lead to a happy and successful school experience
for our children.

Traffic Congestion

Ho Chi Minh City is a modern city but also has a modern problem: traffic jams. In the early
mornings, and again in the evening, around 8 pm, the streets are crowded with cars, taxis, and
trucks. This essay will explain the causes of traffic congestion in HCMC and discuss the effects
of this problem.

Ho Chi Minh City traffic problems stem from several causes. The rapid economic growth of the
emirate has enabled most residents to buy their own cars. This has put intense pressure on the
road system, which although it is highly developed, has not been able to keep up with the
expansion in population. Another cause is the absence of any major public transport system such
as buses or trains. Because of this, residents rely on hordes of taxis, thus adding to the
congestion. Yet another contributing factor is the layout of the island. This limits road construction.

The resulting traffic jam has several adverse effects. First of all is the frustration and anger felt by
road-users. This can result in tension and accidents, and, ironically, emergency vehicles may not
even be able to reach the scene of such accidents. Another effect is the waste of time spent in
traffic. This lowers productivity at work and contributes to reduced time at school and with
family. There are also additional costs to the city in terms of air pollution and unnecessary fuel
consumption. Shopping and daily errands become more of a chore, and the city suffers.

In conclusion, commuters and road-users will need to cooperate with municipal authorities as
they introduce measures to reduce congestion. However, HCMC has shown its ability to rise to
challenges in the past, and most residents are confident that the city will still be an attractive
place to live as the problem of traffic is addressed.
Cause and Effect: FAST FOOD

In the past people in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) used to eat healthy, freshly prepared food with
their families in the home. Today however, many people, particularly young people, prefer to eat
fast food such as hamburgers, fried chicken, shawarma, or pizza. There are many reasons why this
change has occurred, but this essay will also outline the serious effects of this move towards fast
food on individuals and society.

There are many reasons for the popularity of fast food. One of the main reasons is the change in
lifestyle. Many people in HCMC are working long hours, shifts, or extended school days. They don’t
have time to find ingredients or prepare good food. Women are now starting to work in HCMC, and
this can result in less time being available for preparing family meals. Another cause is the huge
number of young, affluent people in HCMC. The rapid development of the country has meant that
young people, who comprise over 75% of the population, have money to spend. A third reason is
advertising. HCMC is a modern, free-market country, with all forms of media such as the Internet
and satellite television, and people like to try new products and different kinds of fast food.
However, this change in diet can have some serious effects. One effect is on health. Many individuals
in HCMC are becoming obese. These people will be less productive and have conditions such as heart
disease and diabetes. Another result of fast food culture is the loss of the family tradition of eating
together. Children and adults rarely eat together now, and thus get less opportunity to talk. A further
effect is on the economy. Although fast food is not very expensive, it is more expensive than cooking
properly for yourself. Many of the fast-food companies are franchisees of foreign corporations, so
profits leave the country.

In conclusion, fast food, although it is convenient and a tasty addition to a diet, can have serious
health and social effects. People should learn to choose fast food carefully and remember the
pleasure of eating good food in good company.

Cause and Effects of HAVING CHILDREN LATER IN LIFE

Many men and women are making the decision to have children later in life.

Why is this trend occurring? What are the impacts of this development on both family and
society?
In the past, it was a natural step that a couple would get married fairly young, and then start a
family. However, this is no longer the case and the delaying of childbirth is becoming very
common. This essay will consider the reasons for this trend and the possible effects on families
and society.

The driving force behind this trend is changing employment patterns. As more women have
pursued an education and entered the workforce, they tend to marry later and have children later
in their life. This is unavoidable in many cases because women cannot combine family and work
well due to costly childcare. Another factor is all the other opportunities available to everyone.
For example, many men and women choose to travel around the world or take the chance to
work in another country, thus delaying settling down.

There are a number of possible impacts on families and society. Firstly, with regards to families,
it can be more difficult for older women to get pregnant and they may experience more health
problems, such as a miscarriage, high blood pressure or diabetes, during pregnancy. Also, the
parents may find the whole experience of bringing up children more tiring if they are older. In
one respect it may be positive for society because if people are choosing to work for longer, a
country will have a productive workforce. On the negative side though, in the long-term falling
fertility rates will mean an aging population with a lack of young people to work and take care of
the elderly.

In conclusion, there are several reasons that people are having children later in life, and this can
have a number of impacts, both positive and negative. Given the fact that society continues to
change, this trend is likely to continue well into the future.
TOPIC: The percentage of overweight children in western society has increased by almost 20%
in the last ten years. Discuss the causes and effects of this disturbing trend.

Over the last ten years, western societies have seen close to a 20% rise in the number of children
who are overweight. This essay will discuss some reasons/causes why this has occurred and
examine the consequences of this worrying trend.

The main cause of this problem is poor diet. Over the last decade there has been a prolific
increase in the number of fast food restaurants. For example, on nearly every high street there is
a MacDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut. The food in these places has been
proven to be very unhealthy, and much of the advertising is targeted at children, thus ensuring
that they constitute the bulk of the customers of these establishments. However, it is not only due
to eating out, but also the type of diet many children have at home. A lot of food consumed is
processed food, especially with regards to ready-made meals which are a quick and easy option
for parents who are working hard.

The effects of this have been and will continue to be very serious. Firstly, there has been a large
increase in health related diseases amongst children, especially diabetes. This debilitating illness
means a child has to be injected with insulin for the rest of their life. Not only this, very
overweight children often experience bullying from other children, which may affect their mental
health. The negative stigma of being overweight may also affect self-esteem.

To sum up, it is evident that there are several causes of obesity amongst children, and a variety of
negative effects. Society must ensure steps are taken to prevent this problem from deteriorating
further.
As countries have developed there has been a trend towards smaller family sizes.

Why does this happen? How does this affect society?

Many countries around the world are becoming richer as they develop and at the same time these
countries are seeing a reduction in the size of the family unit. This essay will discuss the reasons
for this phenomenon and examine some of the possible effects it will have on society.

One of the principal reasons for smaller family units is birth control. As a country develops and
becomes richer, birth control becomes more readily available. This may be due to a rise in the
number of medical clinics or the distribution of free contraception. The result of this is that
people can choose family size. Another important factor is the rise in the levels of education that
occur as a country develops, which means that women are more educated and more likely to be
working. Consequently, many will want to delay having children and so will likely have fewer in
the long-term.

This can impact on society in a number of ways. One positive effect is that the population will
fall, which will likely result in less poverty as there will be less competition for scarce resources.
The parents can also provide a better education to their children as it will cost less, which will
benefit society as a whole. A possible negative impact is that there will be fewer younger people
in the workforce in the future, thus making the sustainability of future economic growth less
certain.

In conclusion, family size has fallen due to birth control and education, and this can impact on
debt, access to resources, and economic growth. Regardless of any impacts, this trend is likely to
continue as countries around the world develop and become wealthier.

Causes, Symptoms and Consequences of Internet Addiction

Internet addictions are all over the place. They can affect anyone at any time. Just like with any
addiction you have to be prepared and know about them so that you don’t get sucked in and end
up having an addiction to the Internet.

The cause of Internet addictions is basically a need for something. Most of the time people don’t
realize that they become dependent on something until they are already addicted. They start out
by playing a game on the Internet and find that it gave them pleasure. Then the next time they are
on the Internet they play it again. Then again. Then they start going on the Internet just to play
the game. Then they spend hours and hours playing it. It’s the same for any type of Internet
addiction. You start by being curious or just looking around on the web and find that you like it,
then keep going back to it. When you keep going back and back to it, you create an addiction.

One of the symptoms of an Internet addiction is that you spend most of your time doing it. You
end up spending hours and hours a day doing it. You usually forget about important things like
household chores and your job. You become angry with anyone that tries to stop you from doing
it. You lie about how long you were on the Internet. You try to hide what you are doing from
your friends and family. You treat it like the best thing in the world. You basically come to love it
and don’t want to let it go or let anyone take it away from you.

There are several consequences that can result from an Internet addiction. If you are addicted to
cybersex, pornography, or have online affairs, then you might lose your spouse and your family.
You also would most likely lose your job if anyone saw you looking at it at work. Don’t think
that people can’t see what you are doing, because most of the time they can.

If you have an addiction to online gambling you could end up being thousands of dollars in debt.
You could lose your home and possessions. You could end up filing for bankruptcy because you
couldn’t control yourself.

If you are addicted to gaming on the Internet you would be spending all you time doing that. You
wouldn’t make time for friends or family, wouldn’t go to work, and would probably spend lots of
money buying things for the game or merchandise from the game.

Every Internet addiction has serious consequences. Even if it doesn’t seem like there are many or
that they aren’t a big deal, they really are. Addictions aren’t called addictions for nothing.
Addictions take over your life and destroy it.
Most people don’t recognize that they have an addiction or even an obsession. If you think that
you might have an addiction, make sure that you get help. There are several websites that help
people who have Internet addictions. They provide blogs with people to help, articles, books,
professional help, and groups of people that are going through the same thing. If you are addicted
to the Internet, talk with a friend and let them know that you need help and support so that you
can get over your Internet addiction.

Internet Addiction

Are you preoccupied with the Internet? Do you gain satisfaction by spending a lot of time on
Internet? Are you depressed or irritable when you are forced to cut down on time or stop surfing
on the Internet? If your answers are right, you may be a victim of internet addiction. With the
development and popularity of the Internet, it brings us a new convenient life. We depend on the
Internet and regard it as an indispensable tool for searching abundant information sources,
interacting with others, dealing with business, enjoying on-line games. However, some of people
hook themselves on the Internet compulsively, and it will make detrimental impact on their
lifestyle, health and communicative skills.

Lifestyle without a well-organized schedule is considered one of major effects result from
being obsessed with surfing the Internet. For example, some of the teenagers spend too much
time on the Internet uncontrollably. Time originally spent on studying turns into surfing on the
Internet, Therefore, they don’t have time to study well, such us preview, review the courses and
finish assignments. Besides, because teenagers stay up all night on the net and thus they cannot
concentrate in class on the following day. If this situation lasts for a long time, it will lead to
biological clock inversion and their grades will fall drastically. Take adults for example, some of
them are indulged in the unrealistic world on the net for most of the time. To demonstrate, the
first thing to do when coming home after work is to turn on the computer and connect the
Internet. Therefore, it is an undeniable fact that they cannot focus on their job. In addition, they
may lose track of time and forget to do their work at home such us doing the household chores
and taking care of their children.

Another apparent effect to those who are addicted to the Internet is suffering from physical
illness. Staying in front of a computer for long period time with maintaining inappropriate sitting
posture and doing repetitive small movements with wrists and fingers will contribute to muscular
tension and backache. Furthermore, in the process of doing inactive work, people tend to breathe
in a shadow condition and thus result in the lower rate of blood circulation. Accordingly, bodies
and brains are unable to work efficiently. In addition, addicts are exposed to the electromagnetic
radiation emitted from the computer. This radiation may threaten nerve center or weaken
immune system. Addicts thus have higher risk of getting sick.

Just as negative effect of health problem due to Internet addiction, people will be deprived of
communicative skills in the real world. For example, the Internet offers network where
individuals can interact with other individuals behind the screen, therefore; they don’t know the
other individuals’ appearance when they are chatting on the net. Besides, some people
communicate with others just by typing some symbolic signs and specific words without
showing facial expression, including angry, joyful and sad, hence; this expression are exactly
replaced. In some cases, some people take away the way of using face-to- face gestures, such as
body and hands. Without exercising these skills, they can weaken little by little, and then lose
real life communicative skills in this kind of way. For the other example, some people hook
themselves on the Internet at home or outside alone. They are indulged in the fictitious world on
the net day and night and keep playing on-line games frantically. Without connection to any
other people, friends, even family, accordingly, they are divorced from reality and cut themselves
off from the masses. Day by day, more time those who spend on the Internet, more likely that
they alienate themselves from the real world.

The invention of the net have been changing our life significantly and even become a new
medium for interacting with others. At the same time, it is followed by several problems, such as
Internet addiction. Addicts have abnormal body clock or forget to do important jobs at schools or
companies which will influence their performance. As for healthy aspect, because of staying up
day and night in front of the computer, it will result in illness and discomfort. Last, declining
social skills and isolating themselves from the real world are also serious consequences for
addicts. The Internet let our life become extremely convenient and bring us plentiful benefits, on
the other hand, it may cause problems to society. It depends on how you use it and how much
time you spend on the net.
