Introduction

What is research ?

The indian wine industry is relatively small and young. with only 30 years of contemporary
wine making around 50 wineries around the world. The origin of the indain wine industry lie
in the hand of two industrialist and businessmen shamrao chougule and kanwan grower.
They were the first people to grow wine on indian soil itself. Shamrao chowgule was in
construction and engineering business therefore he had regular visits to france where ge
tried fifferent wines of france .Considering the fact that grapes were of 6-7 francs per kg
over there and of 1-2 rs in india he got an idea of making wine in india. But there were two
problems that wine was alien in india which means there was lack of experience ,
knowledge and expertise in this field in india and the indian weather which is a tropic kind
of weather . Initially the Frenchmen told chowgule that it is a waste of time to grow wine in
a country with a tropical climate. After extensive research on how to grow high quality
grapes in a country with a tropical climate which include research on highly fertile regions to
grow grape and irrigation techniques suitable,a company from france agreed to provide
technical assistance and the grapes were crushed for the first time in india in 1982. After
production of wine there was another big problem which was how to market this wine .
Chowgule researched about various ways to market his product and came up with an idea
to have a grand launch in a 5 star hotel in center of London with around 100 journalists and
it was a great success . At the same time Grover convinced George vessele of champagne
munn which helped in setting grover vineyard after this wine industry in india grew rapidly .
But with the coming of global financial crisis and terror attacks in Mumbai tourism in india
fell drastically and wine worth Rs 240 vcrore worth of wine rotted in tanks and a major
player rotted overnight. After this a new breed of wine producers appeared who did
through research of the market and on how to make wine in tropical climate a with their
cutting edge technology, consultants from around the world. They analyzed what went
wrong for the earlier wine producers and came up with solutions for it . As there is lack of
suitanle soil to grow grapes in india most vineyards were set up on infertile lands these new
wine producers researched on how to tackle this problem and came up with an idea of
scientific analysis of soil which tells which type of minerals are present in the soil and which
is less telling the ideal type of grape is suitable for growing.

Conclusion
With no knowledge of wine making in India , the two businessmen did a systematic
investigation and evaluated on how to make their idea of making wine in India possible .
They convinced some consultants from France and came up with a plan in setting up their
vineyards which gave them the technicality of how to produce wine . Even after production
of wine was made possible , they still encountered many problems like how to enhance the
quality of their product which they sorted with the help of extensive research on how to
make the soil more suitable and they added some minerals to the soil after cpnducting this
research and tested the product of this soil and then evaluated whether there was any
improvement or no.
