ED 345 Calvin College Teacher Intern Lesson Plan Template

Teacher Intern: Sung Ji Choi Date: March 14, 2018

Grade Level: 2nd Grade Subject/ Topic: Math / Bar Graph lesson 5
Approx. time spent planning this lesson: 1.5 hr
DOMAIN 1: PLANNING & PREPARATION
Main Focus: The main focus of this lesson is to teach how to gather, organize, and display data using a data table and
graphs. Students will use their mathematical knowledge to convert a picture graph into a bar graph. Also, they will learn
how to make a 2-step word problem.

Brief Context: 18 students. Previously, students have learned about bar graphs and how to convert (change) a picture
graph into a bar graph. Students are practicing how to use information in a bar graph as well as information in a word
problem to solve problems.
Prerequisite Knowledge/Skills: Students need to know how to draw and read a bar graph. Students need to know what
data and scale mean. Students need to distinguish a vertical bar graph and a horizontal bar graph. Students need to know
how to write a full sentence including uppercase and period.
Objectives:
 Students will be able to gather, organize, and display data using a data table and graphs.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.D.10
Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories.
Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems1using information presented in a bar graph.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.A.1
Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding
to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using
drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.1
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.B.2
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.2 By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of
two one-digit numbers.

Assessment:
Formative: The teacher will ask several questions to check students’ understanding of content. The teacher will monitor
each student’s work during the lesson. The teacher will walk around, check each student’s work, and record them on a
sticky note.
Summative: The teacher will check each student’s answers on p.243-244 and their classroom birthday graph worksheets.
Worldview Integration: God created this world. For us, it is important to be aware of the world that we’re living in.
Learning about graphs will help our students to learn more about the world. It will help them to understand the world in
better ways.

DOMAIN 2: THE CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT

COVENANT MANAGEMENT: Relationship & community building

-The teacher will work with whole class. Students will interact with each other and with the teacher while they learn about
bar graphs. By drawing a bar graph based on their interests, the students will build relationship with each other. During
this lesson, students will draw a classroom birthday graph. By doing this activity, students will know more about their
classmates.

CONDUCT MANAGEMENT:
Identify at least 2 ways you will gain whole group attention:
-Students will raise their hand if they want to say something or have questions.
-The students will remain in their seats during the lesson.
-The teacher will ask questions to the students to keep their attention.
-The teacher will demonstrate expected behaviors to the students.
Strategies you intend to use to redirect individual students:
The teacher will ask questions to each student so that they can have an equal opportunity to talk.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
The students will sit at their desks. They will work individually and face the white board to follow teacher’s instruction.
The middle lights should be turned off so that the students can easily see the screen.
DOMAIN 3: INSTRUCTION

CONTENT MANAGEMENT: THE LESSON

Motivation/Opening/Intro: 2 min
1. Review the previous lesson
“Yesterday, we counted number of cubes, made a data table, and draw bar graphs using the information we collected. Do
you remember that yesterday, during the lunch time, I asked you about your favorite sport. We counted the number, and
we got this data. (data is written on the board. Soccer: 2, volleyball: 7, Basketball: 8, football: 3) Today, we’re going to
use this information to make a data table, a picture graph, and a bar graph.

Development:
2. Ask students to turn to p. 243. (use an overhead projector) 5min
-“We’re going to draw a picture graph and also a bar graph. But, before we do that, we need to fill out the data table first.
What would you write for the title? (Favorite Sport)”
-Write down Favorite Sport on the board.
-“The second column is about the number of children. What should we have to write on the top of first column? (Sport)
Let’s fill out the first column first. (soccer, volleyball, basketball, football)
-Write down the numbers in the second column.
3. Picture Graph 3min
“Now we have our data table, so we can draw a picture graph using the information we have. What should we have to
write first? (title). Write down the names of sports. Draw stars in each row to show how many children choose that sport.
Rest your head if you finish.”
-Fill out the graph and show it to students.
-“Give me a thumb up if your picture graph looks same as the one on the board”

4. Bar Graph 5min

“Last week, we learned how to change a picture graph to a bar graph. Now, we need to change our picture graph into a bar
graph. Can we draw a horizontal bar graph using this? (no)”
-Ask students why we cannot draw a horizontal bar graph. (Scales are at the bottom)
-What should we have to write first? (title)
-Write down the names of sports and scale.
-“The scale starts from 0 not 1.”
-Ask students to take out crayons and draw bars
-Go over the answer when they finish.

5. Write a 2-step problem 5min

-“This question asks us to write a 2-step word problem about the graph that we made. One-step word problem is very
simple. You can find the answer by just looking at the graph. For example, how many people chose soccer? But, 2-step
problems are more complicate. You need to think more than twice. Can you give an example of 2-step word problem?
(How many fewer children picked football than picked soccer or basketball?)

6. Turn to p. 244. 1 min

-“Look at the data table on the top. What is this about? (favorite subject)
-“Penguin made a graph using this data table. Do you notice any error? (scale starts from 1)
-“How can we fix this error?”

7. Ask students to solve six problems. 5min

-“Raise your hand when you finish. I will check your answer.

8. Classroom Birthday Graph

“Do you know who’s birthday is coming soon? Liza and Charlie’s birthday is this Friday. We know our friends’ birthday.
It is written on the chart in the back. Now, we’re going to make a bar graph to show our classroom’s birthdays.”
-Give worksheet to students.
-Is this a horizontal bar graph? Or a vertical bar graph?
-Show the list of birthdays.
-Ask students to draw a bar graph.
-When they finish, ask students to color the cake.

Closure:
-Ask students to put their worksheet into the hand-in basket
-clean up the desk
-Transition to lunch time

DOMAIN #4: PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

CANDIDATE NOTED EVIDENCE OF PROFESSIONALISM: Please note recent evidence of your efforts as a
professional.
Check common core standards for math
Check textbooks, objectives, and expectations
Using various technologies in the lesson
Use various ways to increase students’ participation
I consider students’ interests. They love sports. Also, they love to talk about their birthday.
