A lo largo de la historia de la psicología, diferentes autores han mostrado posiciones
distintas sobre qué es la inteligencia (Galton, 1869; Binet, 1911; Spearman 1927,
Thurstone, 1938; Wechsler 1955; Cattell, 1987; Horn, 1991; Carroll 1993; Sternberg,
1995).
Las preguntas que desde Francis Galton (1883), la literatura científica ha ido poniéndose
han sido las siguientes:
Según Francis Galton (1909) del University College of London la inteligencia es una
sola propiedad que pertenece al sistema nervioso y es diferente en cada individuo. Se
trata de una herramienta desarrollada por la evolución a través de la selección de los
individuos mejor adaptados al ambiente y que permite su supervivencia (Galton, 1883). De
particular interés para Galton era el estudio de cómo la inteligencia se transmite a través de
las generaciones.
Primo de Charles Darwin (1859) y firme defensor de la teoría evolucionista, Galton avanzó
la hipótesis de que la inteligencia es una capacidad hereditaria. Emprendió un estudio sobre
los personajes más relevantes de su tiempo, descubriendo que muchos de ellos estaban
relacionados entre sí en cuanto pertenecientes a un número relativamente pequeño de
familias. Desde esta observación conjeturó que el talento y la genialidad fuesen
genéticamente determinados antes que determinados por el ambiente (Galton, 1869).
