Responsible innovation has been a key focus for ISKO™ , a company committed to
developing an integrated field-to-fabric approach in every step of the value chain.
Take for example ISKO Reform™ stretch technology. With outstanding fabric recovery,
jeans retain shape wear after wear. This technology means female consumers wash their
jeans less, thus saving on water. According to a leading denim brand’s lifecycle analysis of
a jean, 23% of the water consumption throughout the life of a jean happens during
consumer care. ISKO Reform™ technology eliminates the need to frequently wash the
jeans for shape retention reducing water and chemical detergant consumption during
home laundry
Next up is ISKO™’s patented concept ISKO POP™. This glamorous fabric technology
combines one-of-a-kind shine with a unique silken softness that begins within the yarn
and stays with the garment. This yarn process means garment makers can do without
chemical softeners during production and so reduces chemical consumption.
ISKO™’s, brand new concept, ISKO Cottonized™, is entirely made without the use of any
cotton. Considered by many as the future for environmental sustainability, ISKO
Cottonized™ employs regenerated cellulosic fibers such as Tencel® and Rayon to
produce “cotton-less” denim fabric with an appearance, drape, and wash-down unlike any
other denim. The best part: it looks like vintage denim.
-A filtration and treatment plant cleans the water used in the manufacturing process,
recycling it for other industrial uses.
-New finishing technologies minimize water consumption, saving 280,000 tons in 2016.
-Automation systems installed in the weaving halls saved over 1,4 milllions of kwh of
energy annually and reduced carbon emissions emissions by 900 tons per year.
-Heat and steam generated during the production cycle are captured and re-used,
minimizing energy consumption. resulting in 86,000 kwh of energy savings annually while
reducing carbon emissions by 56 tons/year.
In order to ensure the validity and replicability of the LCAs, publicly available and
independently verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPD®) have been produced
by ISKO, in line with ISO 14025. ISKO has become the first denim manufacturer globally
to obtain pre-certified EPD®s for all of its products, grouped into nine categories. The
results of these industry first EPD®s are being used to create the independently devised
Product Category Rules (PCR) for future denim industry EPD®s. Thanks to ISKO’s
leadership creating the first denim EPD®s the PCR is due to be published in November
2018 paving the way for consistent and comparable assessments of denim across the
industry, increasing transparency of environmental impact, improving consumer
awareness and driving environmental improvement.
Visit Environdec to learn more about EPD®s, and access ISKO’s EPD® verified LCA
results for all of its products in the EPD® database.

ISKO Earth Fit™ forms an integral part of ISKO™’s responsible innovation platform.
Made with eco-friendly raw materials like organic cotton, Better Cotton, pre-consumer
recycled cotton and post-consumer recycled polyester from PET bottles, ISKO Earth Fit™
offers responsibly innovated denim fabrics in ISKO™’s most popular shades. Available in
fabric concepts demanded by global consumers, brands are able to extend their best
selling styles using ISKO Earth Fit™.
ISKO™ is the only denim mill in the world that was awarded with the prestigious Nordic
SWAN Ecolabel and the EU Ecolabel for several articles within ISKO Earth Fit™
collection. The EU Ecolabel criteria are developed and reviewed in cooperation of experts,
industry, consumer organisations and environmental NGOs. The Nordic SWAN Ecolabel
evaluates a product’s total lifecycle from raw material to waste/recycling, taking into
account environmental problems in each part of the supply chain.
This achievement came through ISKO™’s fulfillment of strict requirements for sustainable
fibers, for chemicals used in every stage of production, and caring for social and
environmental impacts.
While we use sustainable materials as well as improve water and energy use, our primary
focus is always people. We value our employees, ensuring equal opportunities for all. We
also believe that a company only truly fulfills its mission if it improves the life of the
communities it works in. We want our success to extend itself into the homes of
thousands.
ISKO™ is part of SANKO Tekstil, privately owned by Konukoglu family. SANKO Group is
one of Turkey’s largest conglomerates. Through Sani Konukoglu Foundation, SANKO
Group awards scholarships to more than 1,500 university students every year, sponsors
schools and hospitals, and delivers food aid to more than 50,000 families in need. ISKO™
has proven that it is possible to combine outstanding manufacturing performance with
responsibility and sustainability.
The ‘Off To Work’ program allows people to learn how to help themselves.
Through SANKO’s support, young people of Gambia were given training workshops on
entrepreneurship, planning, marketing, budgeting, sales techniques and brand creation. 60
young Gambians were given 3 day-workshops in towns of Gumjur, Sanyang, Madina,
Kartong, Kunkujang, Berending, Tujereng ve Tanje where they learnt how to prepare a
business plan for their business projects.
The ‘Planting Hope’ program gives back to the earth and empowers the people who farm
it.
Through non-government organization Sen de Gel, SANKO initiated “Planting Hope”
project, focusing on women in small farming communities in Gambia. Throughout the
project, workshops are conducted to teach female farmers how to establish seed banks
that can be used by multiple towns, solar-powered irrigation systems, building fences to
keep out the animals from the farmland, and sustainable agricultural techniques. 207
women participated in the project which indirectly benefited a larger community of 1500
people, receiving the following support and services:
“Introduction to sustainable agriculture” workshops
Agricultural lands in the towns were cleaned up resulting in doubling of the farm land,
and were fenced around
More than 50% of the population cannot access drinking water in Gambia and Senegal
which results in infant mortality and widespread sicknesses. NGOs and the local
governments have built wells in villages that cannot access clean water, however the
pumping systems of many of these wells need to be repaired. Locals cannot afford to pay
for this maintanence.
As part of the “Giving Life” project supported by SANKO, the following will be
accomplished:
Pumping systems of 11 wells that serve 7978 people in 9 towns (Mbankam, Kerr Malık
Sarr, Samba Yassın, Fafading, Sarreh Yerro Kumba, Mbulum, Kerr Galo, Mendy

In order to fully understand the impacts involved in the textile supply chain, and where we
can make even better choices, ISKO has worked to obtain Life Cycle Assessments (LCA)
of all of its 25,000+ denim products, in line with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.
Thanks to ISKO’s

been awarded another achievement through EU Ecolabel.
ISKO™ EU Ecolabel products will be launched in May 2017 as part of the new collection.
ISKO™ is now the first and the only denim mill in the world to have received these two
distinguished recognitions.
“Being conscientious comes from research, attention, a deep commitment and pointed
awareness about what is happening to our planet,” explains Fatih Konukoglu, CEO of
ISKO™ Division and board member of SANKO Group. “Here at ISKO™ to produce
means to care: care about the people, the environment and product. This firm belief is the
soul of our nurturing approach. We believe in the future: that’s why we continue to invest in
protecting our planet”, he concludes. Fatih Konukoglu’s comments are further echoed
by Anita Winsnes, managing director of Ecolabelling Norway: “It’s great that the world’s
biggest denim manufacturer shows such a commitment to sustainability. If we are going to
succeed with the necessary green shift in our global economy, it’s important that
companies like ISKO™ clear the way. When giants take steps towards more sustainability,
the impacts are huge”.

How can we look back and move forward? What is the new forward? Denim has been the
lead in dressing social changes happening under the layers of society for more than a
hundred years. What will be its influence in the future? How will we document the society
to come? UnDocumented is a blank statement, it is a state of non confinement, a citizen of
planet earth free to navigate the world geographically, an idea that has yet to be
documented, something unseen that speaks a new language, the undocumented future of
denim growing from previous documents. It is the non-official history of humankind and
how denim will continue to move with it from behind the wheel. UnDocumented: people

been presented and made public.
Addressing fashion design students all over the world, the upcoming 5th edition of the
contest will be characterized by a new and general main theme, set around the concept
of “UnDocumented”.
For the fifth year in a row the international denim contest will give the most talented

6.1.2 Schools
The ISKO I-SKOOL™ Team selects a list of schools to collaborate with, whereas each
school must assign a teacher (“Tutor”) to mentor students throughout the process.
For the second year in a row students outside partnering schools can apply to be part of
the project. A maximum of 50 students can participate in the competition and at least one
Independent Student will be shortlisted by the ISKO I-SKOOL™ team to take part in the
final phase, given that all application terms, conditions and guidelines have been
respected.
During the initial phase students will have to produce several materials
called “deliverables”. All these materials are mandatory to start production of their own
denim garment.
They will start “making their own Manifesto” imagining the future of denim, beginning from
a blank page and trying to develop a new and fresh perspective. However, to imagine the
future students will be asked to look at the past and at the social history of denim, guided
by a series of “Documents” that testify the importance and historical role of denim from the
Forties until today. These “Documents” on denim past social history, that serve as
inspiration and documentation to develop the storytelling of a student’s project, can be
found and examined on ISKO I-SKOOL™ Denim Awards Pinterest Profile.
it.pinterest.com/iskooldenim/boards/
Students will have then to create their own inspirational board using images that have
inspired their outfit project adding a brief storytelling of the concept behind it.
Furthermore, they will create sketches and drawings of the outfits having the possibility to
choose from several denim fabric types provided by ISKO™.
During the final phase, led by ISKO I-SKOOL™ team, they will go through all the
necessary steps to realize an industrializable denim outfit.

the project and get a chance to be shortlisted among ISKO I-SKOOL™ 5 Denim

The project offers them the opportunity to test their theoretical knowledge by actually
designing a professional marketing project applied to the denim industry.
In the frame of the ISKO I-SKOOL™Marketing Award, students are asked to create
marketing plans and denim innovation focuses applying their strategic approach, out-of-
the-box thinking and creativity, together with actual feasibility to the denim industry.
Marketing innovation should be generated by students, including plans for product identity
graphic design, comprehensive communications strategy and promotional events.

6.3.1 What can be expected for the future of denim and, therefore, of
fashion?/1
The new market will be more and more permeated by a new type of consumer that cuts
across traditional market segments: the eco-conscientious consumer. An audience of 2.5
billion millennial consumers worldwide is also coming forward. These new protagonists of
the arena tend to experience purchase as a “social contract” that is emotionally and
ethically binding. Transparency, increased competition, and instant connection make
consumers (especially millennials) more inclined towards buying products that can express
more value than their price and, most of all, they expect a company to be good – good for
people, good for society, and good for the planet.
6.3.2 What can be expected for the future of denim and, therefore, of
fashion?/2
Brands with a purpose will continue to outperform stock markets (120% already in 2016,
based on Interbrand’s Report “Best Global brands”), and developing more purposeful
brands will be critical in order to establish or enhance future brand equity. The Ingredient
Brand model, the behind-the-scenes choice of virtuous materials, services and
approaches, is ideally suited to provide transparency and accountability for finished
products.
Those brands that successfully reach a no.1 position in their relevant category will be best
prepared for a prosperous future.
