ARTICLE REVIEW

In the article “Obsessive passion, competence, and performance in project

management context”, the study by Adesuwa Omorde, Sara Thorgen and Joakim Wincent
(2012) which investigated the project leader’s competency and their obsessive passion in
achieving goals in project management context.

The author begin the case by highlighted that even project leader and team are very
capable and have skills in achieving project goals, it does not guarantee the success of the
project. Other than that, the author also state to attain goal, it is not enough by being
competence without any process of intervening. The author also introduce that if the team
member clear and strong motivation, the team will attain the project goals. Lastly, the author
also state that experience obsessive passion can affect the the behaviour of individuals in goal
process. Based on this article, it also stated that the author had done theoretical framework
by refer from research regarding project management, goal setting and individual versus team
competence and passion to prove that obsessive passion play importance role that have
relationship with competence and goal attainment.

Next, the author also mention about competence and obsessive passion can be
affected by the team surrounding in hypothesis development. For instance, when the project
leader are overly capable and confident in carrying out the project, they will do it without
develop their obsessive passion towards the job. The consequences, they are not focused
and put a little effort in finishing the job. As for the team member, when they are many overly
capable member in the team to gain successful goal, as the result they do not need help and
guidance from project leader. This will affect the project leader obsessive passion toward the
goal since the project leader do not find to achieve project goal is challenging. The authors
conveyed their concern tone by using words such as boredom, less enthusiastic, lees attempt
to prove this statement.

Besides that, the authors also generally claim the importance for project leader and
team member to have strong motivation which related to obsessive passion in order to achieve
project goals. The project leader need to perceive that high motivation is needed in facing
challenging goals. The reason is the level of difficulties for goal challenge are depends on how
complex the task or the project. Every task or project are different and comes with unique set
of challenges. The bigger and more dynamic the project is, the more likely it is to cause for
the project leader and team member to focus and have a great deal of effort to attain the goal.

In the articles the author also explain the level of hypothesis. According to the first
hypothesis, project leaders with moderate level of efficiency have the highest level of passion
for obsession for their projects. In addition, the author also mentions his findings suggesting

1
that U-shaped relationships reverse the efficiency of project leaders and their experience is
not supportive about the obsession passion but instead it shows a positive linear relationship
between project leader and their obsessive passion.

Next, the author's highlighted about the support of the hypothesis that there is a non-
linear relationship between the member's membership team and the obsession membership
leader project. The authors also tell if the overpowered project team will cause the obsessive
passion in project leaders to diminish. Subsequent to the discovery of the third author,
emphasizing that reducing the spirit level is an important element. Where has led to the
hypothesis correlation between goal challenge and goal attainment which has been positively
moderated by the project leader obsessive passion.

In the first study, studies on the relationship between efficiency and achievement of
goals have been extended by testing and supporting the role of obsessive passion. As
hypothesized and consistent with conceptual dialogue and previous discussions, to change
the dimension of motivation to achievement must have competence. Obsessive spirit is an
example of motivation.

In the second study, the study has highlighting about the positive role and importance
of obsessive passion in certain circumstances. Obsessive passion towards can lead to positive
consequences. Hence, research on achieving goals has shown that high level of commitment,
persistence, and effort will lead to a higher level of achievement when the target is challenging.

The study on this now extends the understanding of achievement goals by suggesting
individuals, in this project the leader with a high spirit of obsession can achieve that goal more
challenging. So this suggests passion is an important factor for individuals facing and
achieving goal challenges. This study is not unlimited. Because it is limited to individual
dependence on a large project leader sample, the EU project makes the author less certain of
their ability to announce their results to other populations. There are also other steps that might
be achieving goals that can be used to get a wider picture. Team leaders also provided
information on the reasonable number of members of the group. Hence, there is encouraging
future research to improve or find alternatives to team efficiency measures.

With this hypothesis he can explain why too many competent teams are likely to fail to
achieve a challenging goal. There are also issues highlighted in previous project management
supervision. This problem occurs when the project leader is too busy because he is a leader
project not ready when leading big and challenging project. So the study in this article has
clear implications for practice and theory. According to these articles, what drives project
leader direct team members to attain goals is caused by project leader losing the anxious
feeling. Because of that, the leader who is managing the R & D project is encouraging to find

2
ways to challenge their team. This will help leader project to guides their team in how to reach
goals when there are gap between the team competence and the objectives for which they
are aiming. Moreover, this situation forces the project leader to invest more efforts in the
project team. As a person in charge for this endeavour, the project leader must continue to
and will not introduce more demanding situations for the project team, even though they may
partly doubt that team leader's competence is sufficient to reach the goals. This point to make
sure that organization and project leader alike to consider the importance of their own passion
and their team member's competence levels before, during and after specific tasks are
undertaken.

At a higher levels of goal challenge in the project goal attainment is higher when the
project leaders have a higher level of obsessive passion. This finding underscores that project
leader obsessive passion as a key mechanism in contexts with high goal challenges and the
risk of having overly competent team members in such contexts. The strong passion are need
when competence levels are extremely high to attain challenges goals mitigated among
project leader.

The authors uses very established facts to prove and support it hypothesis regarding
obsessive passion and other information that related to it by using reference from the prior
research that had been done, so that it can prove it this article credibility. For instance, by
referring Kaslow et al., 2007; Vallerand et al., 2007, 2008 that state about when the project
leader that have low competence unable to develop obsessive passion towards project goal
since low competence always associated with anxiety and apathy.

Moreover, to make sure that all the hypothesis are valid, the authors had done
qualitative and quantitative method. As for qualitative method the authors had done sample
and data collection that included 134 individuals to participate in leading the development
project in Sweden. They gave questionnaire to the project leaders to collect the data about
the project progress and their opinion regarding the project they carried out. Next, for
quantitative method measures and measurement quality by doing survey that contain Likert
Scales to rate their experience. All the measurement were tested by SPSS and exploratory
factor analysis. This show that it has reliability since the support to prove the hypothesis are
from expert testimonies.

According to the articles this research are done to study theoretically and empirically
link between efficiency, obsessive passion in project management. Theoretical purpose itself
is a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, especially one based on
general principles independent of the thing to be explained or existing only in theory while

3
empiric is based on concerned with, or verifiable by observation or experience rather than
theory or pure logic .

Data that does not show the immediate impact of achieving goals from both project
leader’s leadership or team efficiency, so this leads to previous studies that efficiencies are
insufficient to achieve goals but give insight that spirit is an example of the required
dimensions. Previous research has highlighted the negative side associated with obsessive
passion, with this study it has given the impression that it is also important to be aware of the
benefits of excitement for work activities when the goal is challenging. The study of the
relationship between efficiency and obsessive passion and the goal and goal achievement of
mentors has resulted in discussion of efficiency, enthusiasm research and goal-setting theory
in several ways.

In summary, this article shows that the project leader's obsessive passion is an
important factor in directing competent team members to meet the challenges of challenging
projects. The findings of the study have also been able to stimulate additional research that
includes how individual excitement, fun and emotion are important and necessary in
combination with the efficiency of achieving positive outcomes.
