Animal Fantasy

These are stories of quests, battles, cultures, and

journeys with animals as their protagonists.

The animal have anthropomorphic (human-type)

characteristics, relationships, dilemmas, and thoughts.

Very few of these stories involve humans and in those

that do, the animals remain the central characters.
Personified Toys and
Objects
Stories in which admired objects or beloved toys are
brought to life and believed in by a child or adult
character in the story are the main focus.

An object that has human characteristics or emotions is

said to be personified.

In these stories, toys or inanimate (non-living) objects

have human emotions or abilities.

Worlds of Little People

developed a culture of their own in this world or who
live in another world.

various names, such as dwarves, elves, and fairies.
Supernatural Events and
Mystery Fantasy

Stories that fall into this sub-genre often have ghosts,

vampires, witches, werewolves, goblins, magic, or other
things that are in the supernatural realm.

One common form of supernatural literature for

children’s books is the ghost story.
Historical Fantasy
Time-warp fantasy

Present-day protagonist goes back in time to a different

era

A contrast between the two time periods is shown

Must fully and authentically develop the historical

setting, both time and place
Quest Stories
Adventure stories with a quest, or search, motif. The quest may be
pursuit for a lofty purpose, such as justice or love, or for a rich reward,
such as a magical power or a hidden treasure.

The conflict usually centers on the struggle between good and evil. The
protagonist is engaged in a struggle against external forces of evil and
internal temptations of weakness. The plots of heroic fantasy are usually
more tightly woven, with all the actions directed toward a single
purpose-the triumph of good over evil.

Heroic fantasy owes great deal to the ancient myths, legends, and
traditional folktales, from which are derived themes, plot structures,
even characters and settings.
Science Fiction and Science
Fantasy

Science fiction creates a picture or story of something

that could happen based on real scientific principles.

Examples of topics: mind control, life on other planets,

space technologies and travel, and future political and
social systems
