Technology is Important!

Technology has changed our world in so many ways. It has made it so people
across the world can talk to each other in seconds, whereas before you would have to
wait months for a letter. Technology has made it so that we have clean, running water in
our homes. Technology is so entrenched in our lives that we use T.V., internet, and
softwares to teach our children as parents and as teachers. “Technology Education
should teach intellectual processes such as problem solving and design that may be
applied broadly and integrated with learning from other curricular areas such as
mathematics and science“ (Sherman, Thomas M. 2010). In today's world, companies
are not looking for employees whose accomplishments look good on paper and have
passed standardized tests, they want employees that are innovative and show problem
solving skills using technology. As teachers, when teaching our students, we should be
preparing them for the workforce and for a successful career for their future. According
to Wright (2013), “In engineering and technology circles, innovation is considered the
most important component of a company’s success and a top priority.” Our schools
should not change their focus to an outdated form of standardized testing that will only
put us and our students behind in the fast developing world. In fact, we need to add
more technology across our school’s curriculum. What better way to put our students
ahead then by giving them all the tools they need to be successful adults in a world so
dependent on technology. The standardized test is outdated.

Identification of Standards
Nevada has computer and technology standards that are based off of National
Educational Technology Standards for Students (ISTE NETS-S). ISTE NETS-S has
seven set standards and five subsets of the standards for students that are: Empowered
Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational
Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator. Nevada Computer and
Technology Standards has six standards compared to the national standards, but the
only difference is that two standards merge into one. These standards are set in place
to help students under the technological world, be prepared for “life in the digital age,
”(Nevada, 2010) and to become effective problem solvers and creative thinkers. These
standards are put in place so that they can be used through any level of school and can
be placed in any curriculum, in any school. In my lesson plan, I am identifying with ISTE
NETS-S:
1.Empowered Learner
Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and
demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences. 1c
Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and
to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

I picked this standard for a lesson because I wanted to teach my students about the
tools they can access online to study, practice skills, and improve their knowledge. My
lesson calls for students to create a test for their peers to take as well as take tests their
peers have create for them. This will actively have students using technology and have
students create questions and answers for their peers, which will demonstrate their
understanding of the subject, while also learning a tool for the future studying.
Name of lesson: Kahoot

• Grade Level Appropriateness: 9th-12th secondary education, resource room special

education

• Technology Content Standard Addressed: 1c Students use technology to seek

feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a
variety of ways.

• Other Content Standard Addressed: Students will study chapter 9 on Lord of the
Flies and know the assign subject in english to create 5 intermediate questions for a
quiz with answers

• Objective: Students will create a quiz for their peers on an assigned English section
on Kahoot.

• Materials needed to facilitate the lesson: Laptop with internet access, Internet
programs such as Chrome, Firefox, Internet explorer on laptop. The web address of
Kahoot, Students notes on chapter 9 on Lord of the flies. The book Lord of the flies.

• Suggested group size: 2-6 students

• Procedures: Students will be creating a quiz question on Lord of the Flies chapter 9,
and then have peers take their quiz.

1. Allow students 15-20 minutes to review and create lord of the flies test questions
for their quiz.
2. Hand out laptops for students to login or create a kahoot account.
3. If student need to sign up, have the student click on students, and use their school
email account. Next have the student fill in account details, click the check mark “I have
read”. And Join Kahoot!

4. Once all the students are log in, at the top of the screen bar to the right, click on New
K! This will bring up four choices, have the students click on quiz.
5. Have the students fill out the required boxes, with the following information in the
picture below. Once it is all filled out click on ‘Okay, Go!’

6. Have students click on add questions.

7. Have students change time limit to 90 seconds.

8. Have students create a question, create 4 answers and then click on next when done
with the first question. Next click on add question for the next 4 questions.
9. After all five questions are created have the students click on save. On the top right.
Then choose out of which students you want the other students to take one student
quiz. When decided have the first student click on play it.

10. Have the student click on classic, and have the rest of the students taking the quiz
go to web address Kahoot.it on their laptops.
11. The student giving the quiz will have a game pin that will show up on their screen,
they will share that number with the rest of the class. The students taking the quiz will
enter the game pin and then pick a username. click okay, go!.
