Introduction:

A natural gas-fired furnace in a textile plant is used to provide steam at

130C. This steam is used for the processes required at the textile
plant. At times of high demand, the furnace supplies the heat to the
steam at a rate of 30 MJ/s. The plant also uses up to 6MW of electrical
power purchased from the local power company. The plant management is
considering converting the existing process plant into a cogeneration plant
to meet both their process-heat and power requirements. In general, a
cogeneration plant provides both power (in this case the 6MW) and
diverts part of the cycle for the process heat.

Tasks:

1. Review cogeneration plants. Conduct a short literature search using

valid peer-reviewed sources (3-5) and summarize findings.

2. Decide whether a system based on a gas turbine or a steam turbine

will best serve the purpose, considering the cost and the
complexity. Justify your answer with calculations and documentation.

3. Propose your design for the cogeneration plant complete with

temperatures, pressures, and mass flow rates.

4. Show that the proposed design meets the power and process heat
requirements of the plant.

Turn-in Requirements

Submit a formal report with ONLY the following sections (5pages, double
spaced, or less, not counting figures, diagrams, calculations, etc.):

1. Introduction: state the design requirements and constraints(including

those you imposed).
2. Description of Final Design: describe the final design, including a cycle
diagram on an h-s or T-s diagram and a cycle drawing.

3. Design Methodology: discuss your intermediate designs, how you

iterated to a successful design, and why you rejected your other
designs. You should do at least three design iterations in an effort to
optimize your design. Answer all questions under ‘Tasks’ and include
anything else you deem important. All sample calculations must be
included in an appendix (neatly handwritten is fine).

4. Conclusion and Recommendations: summarize your design and make any

final comments as to why you picked it.

5. Acknowledgements if necessary.

6. References: including conversations with instructors, practicing

engineers, text references, websites used in the paper, and any other
references. Use ASME format for the references.

7. Appendix with all calculations.

Grading will be on feasibility, technical content,

and neatness/professionalism.
