Big Ideas
1. Students will understand tone in both music and literary pieces by recognizing the author or composer’s
intent and purpose
2. Students will utilize proper vocabulary and textual evidence by analysing various texts.
3. Students will create a musical and literary piece that encompasses similar.

Objectives:
● Students will be able to determine tone of a
particular story, poem, or picture by
considering author’s point of view.
● Student will be able to create story and plot
using tone by using specific plot elements
with purpose.
Formatives:
● One Word Tone Prompts
-In Class Daily Assessments
-Using only one tone, like Melancholy,
students will write a scene with dialogue to
encompass that tone in order to understand
this poetic device.
● Music interpretation and reflection
-In Class Once a week; 8 times this unit
-After listening to a song once, we will listen
to it again while students brainstorm and
then write a small story to fit the tone of the
music to practice plot and creation..
● Tone Analysis
-Twice a month, 4 times this unit
-Using textual analysis, students must defend
what they believe said story’s tone to be to
practice using textual evidence..

preparation and proper strategies

Summative Assessment:
Our Assessment will be a multi-genre
project, where students will pick a tone
and compose a musical piece as well as
a narrative short story/poem/etc fitting
their chosen tone. Students will create a

of music.
3. Theory of Music The theory of music is the
understanding of the distinctive language, conventions,
mechanics, and structure of organized sound.
Investigation of music theory allows for a more complete
understanding of all aspects of the musical process,
including musical performance and composition.
