ormer pro cyclist and fan-favorite
Jens Voigt had a storied career which
spanned over 17 years at the sport’s
highest level. His lifetime achievements in-
clude two Tour de France stage wins, 15
completions of the Tour de France, and a brief
stint as the UCI World Hour Record holder in
2014. Now in his third year as an ambassa-
dor of the Amgen Tour of California, Voigt
provides on-course commentary for the NBC
television broadcast, engages with fans in the
hospitality areas, and participates in fan rides
on the course throughout the race week.
While he’s traveling around the world, you can
find Voigt at such events as L’Etape Califor-

The hard-working legend of the peloton also
launched his Shut Up Legs clothing brand
and continues to share his story with fans in
his biography of the same name.

A
top the Amgen Tour of California’s all-time stage wins list a pair
of sprinters reign. Peter Sagan (BORA-hansgrohe) and Mark Cav-
endish (Team Dimension Data) have both claimed podium after
podium, rising through the ranks in parallel with the growth of the race.
Yet each year, sprinters new and experienced alike are primed to chal-
lenge for their own spot in race history.
Sagan, the proclaimed “King of California,” took his first two stage wins
in the 2010 edition of the race. He cemented his California legacy in
2012 with five wins in eight stages, and he won his leading 16th with
a thrilling uphill sprint in Morro Bay last year. The race has become a
fixture on his schedule and an important step in his preparation for the
Tour de France.
“Building up to the Tour de France with a strong performance at the
Amgen Tour of California is always an important goal,” said Sagan, 28,
who won his third consecutive UCI Road World Championship in 2017.
“The race is one of my favorite competitions every year - always chal-
lenging competition and such beautiful scenery - and I’m excited to
return and try for more stage wins this year!”
Last year, Sagan earned his seventh green Visit California Sprint Jersey
(2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017), to go along with his overall
Amgen Tour of California title from 2015. He enters this year’s race on
the heels of a stunning Paris-Roubaix victory in April.
After missing the 2017 edition due to illness, Cavendish is anxious to
get back on the road in California and equally hungry for victory.
“I have been very successful in California,” said Cavendish, 32, who has
claimed 10 stage victories and won two sprint titles (2009, 2015). A four-
time winner of the stage in Sacramento (2010, 2014, 2015, 2016), he
was not only unable to improve his California record a year ago, but
he also crashed out of the 2017 Tour de France, where with 30 stage
wins he was eyeing Eddy Merckx’s all-time record of 34. Thus, he was
grateful to have a “smooth” winter before beginning his 2018 campaign.
“I deserved a little bit of smoothness after last year,” Cavendish said.
“And now I’m looking for victories.”
A slew of world-class sprinters across 17 teams will also undoubtedly
be eager to stand on top of the podium. German Marcel Kittel (KATU-
SHA ALPECIN), who turned 30 just before the start of the race, got his
first taste of California victory last year, winning the opening stage in
Sacramento. Now he’s happy to return and showcase his pure sprinter
power again.
“I like racing as well as training in California - I can see the beach and
do altitude training all in one place,” said Kittel, who has 14 stage wins
in the Tour de France. “I’ve always had a really good time at the Amgen
Tour of California and am excited to compete this year.”

And while the “King of California” may

currently reign in the Golden State, who
could be next in line for the throne?
Enter Australian Caleb Ewan (Mitchel-
ton-SCOTT). The 23-year-old is Australia’s
criterium champion and has stage wins
in both the Giro d’Italia (2017) and the
Vuelta a España (2015). He won his first
European race of the season, the Clasi-
ca de Almeria in February, and sprinted
to second place at Milan-San Remo in
March.
Ewan is racing in his first Amgen Tour
of California, and in the U.S. for the first
time, en route to his maiden entry in the
Tour de France this summer.
“I’ve never been in California before
but that’s a race I’ve wanted to do for
a while,” said Ewan. “It’s a nice race to
watch on TV. You always see a good GC
field and also a good sprint field. I’m look-
ing forward to it.”
On the roads of California, Ewan will have
an opportunity to line up against the
fastest riders in the world, including Sa-
gan, Cavendish, and Kittel.
“It will be good to test myself against the
best sprinters,” Ewan said. “It’s important
for everything – the legs and the confi-
dence. It’s important to kick-off with a
good start, try to go for a win, especially
with the sprinters you have there. If you
can win in California, it shows you’re go-
ing good and you can win everywhere.”
America’s premier race has emerged as
a destination for sprinters, while steadily
rising to become one of cycling’s biggest
events worldwide. The Amgen Tour of
California is now a priority on schedules
with stage crowns every rider cherishes.
“There’s a reason all the top riders in
the world come over to America to race
here,” said Cavendish. “It’s always been
a great race.”

UnitedHealthcare’s Katie Hall (Oakland, Ca-

claimed Stage 2 in South Lake Tahoe, took
home the Queen of the Mountain jersey and
finished just one second shy of the overall
win. Ventura, Calif., native Alexis Ryan (Can-

her 2018 season, is back as well.
Another Californian, Megan Guarnier, is
also racing on familiar turf again. A three-
time U.S. national champion, Guarnier won
the 2016 Amgen Tour of California. She
has been competing in the race for many
years, and for 2018 she is racing with the

After winning the 2016 edition, Guarnier
acknowledged the impact of racing at

WHERE TO WATCH IN LONG BEACH

The Amgen Tour of California kicks off 2018 festivities at Long Beach’s waterfront
along Shoreline Drive. The start and finish largely mirrors the annual Long Beach Grand
Prix held only one month prior. On the north side is the expansive Convention Center
complex, anchored by its giant wrapped mural of migrating whales. Below are paddle-
boaters soaking up the sun in Rainbow Lagoon Park. To the south is Rainbow Harbor,
bordered by the pedestrian-centric shopping and restaurants of Shoreline Village and
The Pike. Overlooking this busy scene is the celebrated Aquarium of the Pacific, the
waterfront’s star attraction.
After making a right turn at the majestic Villa Riviera, the peloton heads east on Ocean
Boulevard, hugging the city’s sandy shores for two glorious miles. The riders make a
triangular U-turn where Ocean Boulevard forks, forcing them to deaccelerate and treat
spectators to a rare double-vision opportunity. This is quite possibly the best place
to see Stage 1. Better yet, the Belmont Brewing Company is only steps away. As the
oldest brew pub in Los Angeles, BBC is an excellent representative of Long Beach’s re-
surgence with vibrant eateries and watering holes. If your taste buds drive your mood,
head down to Belmont Shores for Stage 1.
From the edges of Belmont, the race double backs on Ocean before making a right
turn at Bixby Park for a brief detour into a little bit of Long Beach’s interior. As the pelo-
ton speeds back towards downtown, it detours through Bixby Park, Bluff Park, Carroll
Park and Franklin.
Just before re-entering downtown, riders experience the artsy East Village District.
This neighborhood is one of the city’s most vibrant, where independent art galleries
compliment the small bistros, cafes and retailers that give life to a throwback era of
cozy charm. The best place to watch the race is on the periphery – diagonal from
the Villa Riviera – but nowhere is the neighborhood’s allure more evident than among
the stunning architecture at the corner of Broadway and Linden. The Villa Riviera may
provide a picture-perfect race backdrop, but Long Beach’s East Village will satisfy all
cravings once the peloton passes.

AMGEN TOUR OF CALIFORNIA / MEN’S STAGE 2

WHERE TO WATCH IN VENTURA & SANTA BARBARA

“More…more…more!” yelled cycling fans after the finish atop Gibraltar Road in 2016.
The 2018 Amgen Tour of California brings this fan favorite back to the race. This year,
Ventura hosts the start of the Queen Stage with riders lining up steps from the ocean
at the Ventura Pier, before they make their way to the Gibraltar climb. From the stage
start, contenders and sprinters alike will not be taking in the laid back and sun-soaked
vibe of Ventura with 97 miles and 7,700 feet of elevation gain in front of them.
Beginning with a neu-
tral parade through
downtown, the pelo-
ton then heads south
along the majestic
Pacific on Harbor Bou-
levard. Six miles later,
riders pass two high-
lights of Ventura – its
harbor and the historic
Olivas Adobe.
Next, the race heads
further south, turning

ascent up Balcom Canyon Road. A short respite in Santa Paula prefixes the first of
three KOMs in the beautiful Topatopa Mountains. In adjacent Ojai, art takes center
stage and brings the community together. At the heart of this serene mountain town
are more than one dozen art galleries that line the arcaded Spanish-tiled plazas. The
most authentic representation of this tradition is the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts
– just outside town at the top of the first KOM in Happy Valley. When the surrounding
hills were ablaze in late 2017, the Center suffered major damage, but it did survive.
Remarkably, it took only weeks to recover. The surrounding community donated time,
money, and endless hands to help with repairs because this museum and educational
complex is reflective of the community.
From Ojai, the peloton slowly descends to Foothill Road and the seaside towns of
Carpinteria and Montecito. Nearly 90 miles into Stage 2, riders get their first colossal
challenge – one that takes them up more than 3,000 feet in less than 8 miles. This is
the famed Gibraltar Road climb. With maximum inclines of 12%, it is arguably one of the
hardest in Santa Barbara County and the state. For those looking for an iconic stage
race experience, Gibraltar Road rewards spectators with competitive fireworks, breath-
taking views, and a sporting atmosphere on par with some of the Tour de France’s
legendary ascents. There are plenty of curves and switchbacks on which to stake out
a spot.

AMGEN TOUR OF CALIFORNIA / MEN’S STAGE 3

WHERE TO WATCH IN KING CITY AND MONTEREY COUNTY

Race newbie King City starts Stage 3 of the 2018 Amgen Tour of California. Like an ea-
ger host, King City welcomes the peloton not once, but twice throughout the day. The
Tour departs town and races south along legendary Highway 101 before turning out of
the Salinas Valley at San Lucas. If riders were looking for a relaxed day of racing after
Gibraltar Road, they need to keep searching. The day features six KOMs over 123 miles
and 8,300 feet of elevation gain.
Two of these climbs occur within the first 50 miles before re-entering King City and
heading north. In fact, King City presents a unique opportunity to see two portions of
the race while still leaving time to explore this California farming town made famous
by the illustrious John Stein-
beck. First, sample some of
King City’s authentic Mexi-
can taquerias once the race
starts – several are located
in downtown. With bellies full
and feet rested, head east
on Broadway, taking solace
that the one-mile walk to
the next destination is flat
compared with the peloton’s
hilly, 50-mile sojourn to the
same spot. The objective is
the sharp 60-degree turn
from Bitterwater Road onto
Airport Road. Passing ware-
houses and an endless sea
of crops, one can almost
imagine the timeless figures
and features in Steinbeck’s
novels like “East of Eden.”
PHOTO: JIM SAFFORD/AEG
Traveling across the Valley
and into the coastal Santa Lucia Mountains, the Tour rolls through Greenfield, a small but
ideal place to see the race before heading into the Gabilan Mountains. Nearby, Pinnacles
National Park is on the road less traveled. At only 26,000 acres, this is perhaps the best
kept secret in California. Pinnacles’ towering beauty, unbelievable geologic history, and
unique wildlife make it an unforgettable experience.
The race is given a short reprieve before heading back uphill, passing vineyards along
the way. It is impossible to mention Monterey County without its bountiful wine portfo-
lio. Several vineyards and tasting rooms are centrally located in the Salinas Valley, but
for those looking for one-stop tasting, the quaint village of Carmel Valley is second to
none. Still, this small community of 4,400 residents and 10 tasting rooms is off the beat-
en path. The peloton will wish they could stop for a taste instead of making a beeline
for the fifth and sixth KOMs heading into the Laguna Seca Recreation Area and to the
fast-paced finish on the revered WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca racetrack.

WHERE TO WATCH IN MORGAN HILL

The 2018 Amgen Tour of California’s Individual Time Trial returns for the third time to
San Jose and the outskirts of Silicon Valley. The start and finish feature the new host
city of Morgan Hill. This year’s “Race of Truth” is a scenic, 21-mile route that includes
one sizeable climb followed by two precipitous descents. Contested in the backcoun-
try, wind could be a factor on the route, but one thing is for certain, the rider coming in
with the best condition, position, and handling skills will prevail. With the riders parad-
ing through one by one, Stage 4 is the best opportunity to see each individual rider in
their element.

serve rewards spectators with a 180-degree bird’s eye view of the race course and the
lush Santa Cruz Mountains to the west. The preserve essentially lies in the middle of
the time trial loop.
Skirting El Toro, the race continues to climb into the foothills. Past Chesbro Reservoir,
the peloton rapidly approaches the high point of the stage at the 10-mile mark. While
the ascents are another strategic place to watch the riders, they also offer unparalleled
hiking opportunities into the hinterland.
Once riders pass the turnoff to Rancho Cañada del Oro, they begin their short climb
to the Stage’s pinnacle at 728 feet. This is followed by three miles of steep downhills.
Short but sweet, the drop gives riders a chance to rest tired legs in preparation for the
final 8 miles of false flat. On the run-in to the finish, the caravan of riders may begin to
notice the increasing charm of Morgan Hill. At exactly the “1-kilometer” banner sits the
jewel of Morgan Hill – the stately Villa Mira Monte. Listed on the National Register of
Historic Places, this almost southern rendition of a Victorian literally tells the history of
this community.

AMGEN TOUR OF CALIFORNIA / MEN’S STAGE 5

WHERE TO WATCH IN STOCKTON AND ELK GROVE

As the Amgen Tour of California’s Stage 5 gets underway, the Amgen Tour of California
Women’s Race empowered with SRAM riders begin their race and traverse the Califor-
nia Delta region, starting and finishing in Elk Grove. For fans, the result is double the fun
and double the excitement where the routes overlap.
The men’s race should prove to be a day for the sprinters as the 110-mile stage fea-
tures just over 2,500 feet of climbing and only one notable ascent. The stage sets out
from the Downtown Stockton Waterfront, adjacent to the Stockton Arena and Banner
Island Ballpark, home of the Stockton Ports baseball team.
From California’s inland port city of Stockton, the race heads northeast on State Route
88, passing little known farms and vineyards along the way. The area comprises the
northern reaches of the
immensely productive San
Joaquin Valley, the “food
basket of the world.” The
region is well-known, but
it is less known for the
wide variety of products
raised here. Less than one
mile before turning into

ton in the direction of Amador County’s gold country around Buena Vista and the town
of Ione. Skirting this historic town of just under 8,000 residents, Ione’s iconic “castle” is
clearly distinguished over the treetops. Old Ione was founded as a Gold Rush town in
1849. Even today, the town’s three-block downtown remains true to this heritage with
intricate but delicate classic wild west facades.
The race continues to descend from Ione, meandering into Sacramento County for
a fast finish into Elk Grove. Ten miles from the finish, the course levels off and turns
north for the final run-in, coming within arm’s reach of the women’s course and the
lovely Cosumnes River Preserve. Bring a bike to manageably navigate between both
races and the Preserve’s Visitor Center, not even 3 miles away. The Preserve is a force
of nature – a vast, 50,000-acre conservation area that honors the last free-flowing river
in the San Joaquin Valley. As a result, its waters form a broad watershed that is filled
with a diversity of birds and plants that benefit from the river’s annual floods and rarely
seen in other portions of California.

WHERE TO WATCH IN FOLSOM AND SOUTH LAKE TAHOE

Having hosted the Individual Time Trial on two occasions, the City of Folsom has been
a fantastic partner of the Amgen Tour of California. For the 2018 race, they commence
the start of what is guaranteed to be a memorable Stage 6. From the beginning of
the stage, the route heads uphill. Over the course 122 miles, the peloton climbs nearly
16,000 feet, even finishing uphill at the Heavenly Mountain Resort in South Lake Tahoe.
The race processes out of Folsom near the city’s newly completed Johnny Cash Trail,
a unique 3-mile pedestrian and bike path that honors the memory of Johnny Cash and
his historic 1968 performance at Folsom Prison. Turning right at Legacy Park, the riders
start their uphill trek into gold country. Twenty-three miles into the Sierra Nevada foot-
hills is historic Placerville. Originally known as Hangtown, Placerville was the epicenter
of the 1948 Gold Rush, with places like Sutter’s Mill not far away. The entire town is a
California Historical Landmark.
Not 20 miles up from Placerville, the peloton makes a right turn onto the historic Mor-
mon Emigrant Trail. The Tour follows this same route for the next 60 miles into Nevada.
The Trail is marked with history and breathtaking scenery. In 1848, about 50 members
of the famed Mormon Battalion from Sutter’s Fort decided to rejoin their families in
Utah. With the usual passes further north still covered with snow in early May, the
group decided to try a different route, one further south and previously explored by Kit
Carson four years earlier. Setting off from the present-day location of Jenkinson Lake,
the Battalion cleared a new trail that would become a preferred alternate route for new
migrants heading west. Now the world’s best cyclists retrace this route, passing many
roadside markers along the way.
Forty miles after turning onto the Emigrant Trail, the race comes to the highest point
of the stage and the Tour, just under 8,600 feet at the crest of Carson Pass. As majestic
and green it is in summer, Highway 88 is a winter wonderland between November and
April. After the final of four KOMs at the Kingsbury Grade, the riders descend into the
year-round destination of South Lake Tahoe, crossing back into California to make one
final uphill push to finish at the Heavenly resort.

WHERE TO WATCH IN SACRAMENTO

Once again, Sacramento shows us why the city is regarded as one of the most
sports-friendly cities in the U.S. This is the Amgen Tour of California’s ninth year in the
Golden State Capitol and each year is more thrilling than the last. For the men, this
stage is for the sprinters – flat and fast, and finishing with three loops around the in-
famous Capitol Circuit. Only an hour after the men start, the women begin their final
stage on the circuit. Sacramento has never failed to furnish one of the most exciting
race finishes on the WorldTour calendar.
After starting in the shadow of the Capitol building itself, the peloton begins their neu-
tral start parading down the Capitol Mall. It’s not long before they reach the Sacramen-
to River and are making a portage across the historic Tower Bridge. Standing tall in a
mustard yellow veil, the bridge serves as the gateway to downtown Sacramento and
is one of the city’s most iconic features. It opened in November 1935 for trains, cars,
and pedestrians. It was the first vertical lift bridge in California and certainly the most
beautiful. It is also guaranteed to make an excellent photographic backdrop when the
peloton crosses the span – twice.
Once on the western bank of the Sacramento River, the Tour traverses the rural roads
of Yolo County into Woodland and Winters. This is a legitimate agricultural heartland
tour of this famed farm-to-table region.
Back in Sacramento, the peloton finishes on three laps of the Capitol Circuit. Along the
way, they pass some of the city’s best highlights, including a few of its famed neigh-
borhoods. Heading north on 18th Street, the race gets intimate with the trendy district
of Midtown. With Capitol Park on one end and Sutter’s Fort on the other, Midtown is
a great place to venture out beyond the touristy spots. For locals, this not even one
square mile area is just as known for its historic Victorian and Craftsmen homes as it is
for its boutique eateries, bookstores, and coffee shops.

AMGEN TOUR OF CALIFORNIA / WOMEN’S STAGE 1

WHERE TO WATCH IN ELK GROVE

The opening stage for the Amgen Tour of California Women’s Race empowered with
SRAM returns to the City of Elk Grove. Starting and finishing in front of the new Aquatic
Center and Commons, the women’s race winds through one of Elk Grove’s newer res-
idential areas before turning south onto Franklin Boulevard and into the San Joaquin
Valley and the California Delta region. The stage tours several of the area’s beautiful
riverbank and wetlands, hugging the Sacramento River, along this flat and fast nearly
80-mile route.
Only 13 miles into the stage, the peloton passes the pristine and unpredictable Cos-
umnes – the last free-flowing river of California’s fruitful Central Valley. Amid this un-
spoiled landscape is the Cosumnes River Preserve, which the riders get to see up-
close. Spend time exploring the Preserve’s many trails, and bring a bike because only
three miles away, the men’s race makes a final turn before entering Elk Grove.
Passing the Preserve, the race continues south another five miles before crossing In-

AMGEN TOUR OF CALIFORNIA / WOMEN’S STAGE 2

WHERE TO WATCH IN SOUTH LAKE TAHOE

The race takes to the high mountains once again for Stage 2. This stage produced an
epic result in 2017 and will surely live up to expectations in 2018. The 67.1-mile route
features three QOMs, including the 7,740-foot summit of Luther Pass and the now leg-
endary Kingsbury Grade.
From the start in South Lake Tahoe on Pioneer Road, the peloton heads further south
to meet-up with Highway 89. Not even 10 miles from the start, the riders come to the
base of Luther Pass. It’s a great place to see the race as well as dip one’s toes into the
scenic wonders that South Tahoe has to offer. It’s impossible to visit Tahoe and not
explore its expansive menu of hikes that take you off the beaten path.
At the descent of the Luther Pass climb, the peloton embarks on a short loop in Dia-
mond Valley and through the tiny community of Woodfords. The inaugural route of the
Pony Express passed through Woodfords and established a remount station before
making the final push over the Sierras.
After the second QOM at the 7,400-foot Kingsbury Grade, the descent back to South
Lake Tahoe is both short and harrowing, yet rewards riders and spectators with breath-
taking views. The peloton continues through Stateline and to the final QOM – the finish
at Heavenly.

AMGEN TOUR OF CALIFORNIA / WOMEN’S STAGE 3

WHERE TO WATCH IN SACRAMENTO

Sacramento’s Capitol Circuit has earned a reputation as one of the fastest and most
technical courses in the country. This flat, 2.2-mile course features some of the best
cultural highlights that the city has to offer, from historical landmarks to trendy neigh-
borhoods and of course the Capitol building itself. Whatever your preference, this stage
of the Amgen Tour of California Women’s Race empowered with SRAM promises to be
90-minutes of pure exhilaration.
Sacramento is a mix of old and new, both of which make it a vibrant city of historical
character merged with modern trends. The circuit’s first taste of this is at the second
turn onto N Street. Beyond the dense canopy of trees shading the street is the Leland
Stanford Mansion State Historic Park. The park may be less than one acre in size, but it
contains an unrivaled historical and architectural treasure.
Continuing down N Street, the riders pass the historic Blue Anchor Building and West-
minster Presbyterian Church before turning away from the Capitol and into some of
Sacramento’s adjacent neighborhoods. Coming back north on 18th Street, the race
enters the trendy district of Midtown.
With the start and finish in one spot, the tree-lined straightaway down L Street along
the Capitol complex is an ideal place to watch both races.
