Meaning and Purpose of Descriptive Text

 The Meaning of Descriptive Text


Before discussing about the meaning of decsriptive text, it's
good if we know in advance what is the meaning of descriptive.
Descriptive is an adjective that means 'picture'. While the text or 'text'
has a meaning. So, descriptive text is a text describe things, such as
people or human beings, animals, objects, or places, in detail or in
full. The word described here refers to the characteristics of
something we will describe.

 The Purpose of Descriptive Text


Looking at the meaning of the Descriptive Text, we have been
able to know the purpose of the Descriptive Text. The purpose of the
Descriptive Text is to describe something, such as a person or human
beings, animal, thing, or place, in a detailed so that the readers or the
listeners are able to understand what we are able to imagine the
thing, we describe even though they have not seen it before. That is,
the purpose of the descriptive text is to describe things, such as
people or human beings, animals, objects, or places, in detail so that
readers or listeners can understand whatnwe describe and also can
imagine things that we describe, even though they have never seen
objects or things that we describe.

B. General Structure of Descriptive Text


Descriptive text has its own generic structure. This descriptive
text from other text types in English. These are generic structureof
the Descriptive Text:

1. Identication
Identification is the first part of the Descriptive Text that
located in the first paragraph. The function of Identification is to
introduce things or objects that we want to describe to the listener or
reader. Another function of Identification to inform the listener or
reader that objects or things which we will describe is special and
different from others. Identification is the paragraph containing the
description of the object or a little explanation of the object or thing
we want to describe before we mention the properties or
characteristics of the thing or thing in the next paragraph.

Example : Panda is the one of cutest animal in the world. This


animal is has a colour black and white. They has a big
size. Panda has a scientific name
ailurupodamelanoleucathat has a meaning the foot of cat
black and white. Panda is a animal mammals animal that
classified in the family of bear, ursidae that an animal in
Chineese.

2. Description
This part is usually written in the second paragraph and the
next. The contents of the Description section is the characteristics of
objects or things we describe and are a continuation of the
Identification. The characteristics of objects or things are special
characteristics that that are attached to or objects to which we
describe them and are not common things that can be encountered in
any object that is similar to what we describe.

Example : In the thaxonomu classification, panda is a carnivore but


in the reality panda is herbivore. Panda eating plant but
panda is only eating bamboo. In the technical
characteristic, panda is omnivore animal, panda is eating
egg and also insects be side bamboo. The two of food is a
source of good vitamins for them.This ears is move when
panda chewing their food.
The giant panda life in the mountain , like Sichuan and
Tibet. In the last of half 20th century, panda animal is a
symbol of Chinesse Nation, and now panda as a symbol of
golden coin money in that country. Panda has a chineese

C. Language Feature of Descriptive Text


Descriptive Text has several features of language or Language
Feature as follows:

1. Using Simple Present Tense


Because its function to describe something where the
characteristics or arakteristik of the object or thing will not change,
then Descriptive Text using Simple Present Tense.

Example : Panda is the one of cutest animal in the world.

2. Adjective (Using Adjectives)


Because the function is to describe something by explaining
its properties, then in the descriptive text will be found many
adjectives, such as handsome, beautiful, tall, small, big, or if the
adjective comes from the verb, then you will find extra -ve, -ing, -nt
behind it.

Example : Eat (eating)> eating (Panda eating plant but panda is only
eating bamboo).

3. Linking Verb (Using A Link)


The word connector is the word that connects the subject with
the word explanation. The word connector can be either to be (is, am,
are) or something else, such as seem, look, appear, sound, and
others.

4. Figurative language
Using figurative languages such as simile or metaphor as a
way to provide comparison illustrations,
Example : My throat is as dry as a dessert (my throat fuses desert).
Her skin is as white as the cloud and smooth as water (the
skin is as white as cloud and soft as water).

5. Noun (Using A Noun)


Specific nouns, such as my best friend, my dog, Borobudur
Temple, and others. In addition, sometimes also use a noun that gets
adjectives, such as an intelligent student and a big garden.

6. Adverbs
Use Adverbs to provide additional information about the
behavior or properties (Adjectives) described, such as: very, extremely,
definitely. Suppose: He is very handsome; The song sounds
exteremely beautiful; etc.

7. Specific Participant
Specific participant has a certain object, is not common and
unique (only use).

Example : Panda, Samosir Island, Cat, etc.

8. Action Verbs
Related to the topic, there are verbs that show an activity
(activity can be seen) especially when describing behaviours or
personalities (for person or someone).

9. Use of Verb “Have” (Have, Has, or Had)


Use of verb (Have, Has, or Had), in order to give detail
description of the object’s features.

Example : This animal is has a colour black and white. They has a
big size. Panda has a scientific name
