7.

If one strand of DNA in the Watson and Crick double helix has a base sequence of 5'-
GTCATGAC-3', what is the base sequence of the complimentary strand? Justify your
answer.
The base for the complementary strand is 3’-CAGTACTG-5’. Cytosine always paired with
guanine while thymine always paired with adenine because it complements their molecular
structure allowing a stronger hydrogen bond to form.

8. Describe the process of DNA replication.

Helicase will unwind the parental double helix at the origin of replication and the single strand
binding protien will bind to the unwound strand to stabilize it. primase will synthesize RNA
primer which acts as a template for the starting point of DNA replication and DNA polymerase
III will continually replicate the parent strand in 5’-3’ direction (leading strand) toward the
replication fork. Then, primase will synthesize RNA primer in 3’-5’ strand (lagging strand) so
that DNA polymerase III can extends the short RNA primer and form the okazaki fragment.
DNA polymerase I replace RNA primer and DNA ligase will joints the fragments. In the end of
DNA replication, two DNA molecules produced each with one parent strand and one new strand.

9. Why is DNA replication continuous for one strand but discontinuous for the other?
DNA replication continuous in 5’ to 3’ direction but discontinuous in 3’ to 5’ direction. This is
because, DNA polymerase only can replicate in 5’ to 3’ direction.
