PS III is a five-course equivalent integrated semester including half-time teaching and professional study in curriculum
design, leadership, advanced methods, and reflective practice. Intern Teachers are assigned full time to schools for the
semester during which they assume responsibility for approximately one-half of the teaching day. PS III professional study
is designed to complement and enhance the internship. The professional study components may occur on or off-campus
and are coordinated by the University Consultants in collaboration with Intern Teachers and school personnel.
Checklist
Ashley had a successful internship teaching Grade 4. She worked extremely well with her teacher mentor, and spent a lot of
time discussing the students, curriculum and planning, and assessment. Ashley was receptive to feedback, and often the
suggestions would make their way into next classes that she taught. She had good rationale for her choices around planning,
activities, read aloud book choices, and the variety of assessment methods. I found that when she was asked to explain the
"why" behind her choices she could.
Ashley had a teacher presence about her from the beginning. Her students saw her as the teacher in charge and responded
well to her. Other staff members made similar comments to me about Ashley--stating that she was always professional in her
manner and was considered part of the staff.
Ashley worked hard at establishing classroom management techniques, and I found her students for the most part behaved in
an appropriate way that allowed for a positive learning environment. I feel she relaxed as time went on, realizing that
classrooms could be noisy and great learning could still take place. Ashley took pride in the positive relationships she
developed with her students over the four months. She understood that relationships with her students were the biggest part of
class management and she made time for every student in her room.
Another strength in Ashley's practicum was her diligence around preparation. She would begin with the outcome she was
teaching, and work towards assessment and then student activities that would allow them to engage with the learner outcomes.
She also worked hard to begin with attention getting openers and closures that would solidify their learning. The more
experience she has teaching, the easier the planning process will be for her as she really understands the process.
Ashley felt that she still wanted to learn more around assessment and this was one of her Professional growth plan goals. She
understood how important it was to give the students feedback, and that both the students and herself as the teacher would
benefit. She participated actively in report card preparation, as well as attending the celebration of learning evening. She
attended two other evening events (Grade 4 Bingo fund raiser and an Art exhibition) that involved her class, and was
enthusiastic about both, stating how important it was to meet the parents of her students.
Ashely's PIP project was done with two other teacher interns at her school and I know it caused her great stress as it took a
long time for it to gain traction.! Once it did though, it seemed to go well and they were all pleased with the result. This PIP
project will likely be presented at the symposium on culmination day. Her analysis of the project itself and the research that
supported it is included in her portfolio.
Ashley went with another staff member to an evening PD evening around self regulation and executive functioning. I was
impressed that she attended during her evening, and I know she found the material both valuable and relevant. She also
joined the ECAP (Everyone Counts at Probe) staff group that is responsible for planning a full day math event for the entire
school. Ashley will also be providing leadership for the spring running club should the weather ever be conducive for such an
activity!
Ashley has an excellent portfolio which showcases her beliefs around teaching as well as her accomplishments which are
many. Ashley will make an excellent teacher, and any school lucky enough to hire her will reap the benefits of her passion,
enthusiasm, and hard work! I wish her well in future endeavors.
