July DAT Meeting Minutes

Disaster Committee Update

Chairwoman Joan McShane stated the disaster committee is still working on training for
volunteers interested in the Emergency Operations Liaison position, so they can learn about
the EOC and how they work. We are looking for volunteers who might be interested. There is
a self-study work book available, but you also need to take an instructor led course. The
instructor led course will be on Saturday November 13, from 9am-4pm at the chapter. You
also need to take the following FEMA NIMS classes which can be taken online. Go to
www.fema.gov. The on-line NIMS courses are NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800. If you are
interested, please let Chris or Joan McShane know. Joan is also checking all DAT members
training so we can have many specialize in a particular field. Joan will be contacting you, so
watch your emails!

The DAT meeting attendees had a special message

Wea Fire Department Drill

The Wea Fire Department and other Tippecanoe County Fire Departments participated
in drill on Sunday August 15. An old two story farmhouse was lit on fire for training
purposes. The day was extremely hot, and the RV was used as a cooling center for
overheated firefighters. We provided snacks, hydration, a tent for shade, and towels
to the firefighters. The fire was impressive and hot, and we got a lot of great photos.
It was also a great learning experience, and it furthered the respect the volunteers
present have for fire responders. Volunteers that gave up a Sunday to help out were
Justin Kramer, Shane Halbrook, Kellie Mattingly, Joan McShane, and Chris Brady.

Volunteer Spotlight: Regina Lewis

This month, we are spotlighting volunteer Regina Lewis. Regina has been a
huge asset to our disaster department and we would like to thank her for
everything that she has done for us.

How did you get involved with the Red Cross?

It was my second semester of college and I wanted to do something productive with my extra time. I searched
and searched for an organization that would be a good fit. I must have contacted three or four places before I called Amy
Harold and knew the Red Cross was for me!
How long have you been a volunteer?
I have been a volunteer for about 3.5 years.
What do you like most about volunteering?
I really like to go on fire calls because they are so exciting. But, being around people and connecting with them is one of my
passions so I love showing up at community events! I also like being a part of an organization that is local and national
because the opportunities are endless.
What are some of your favorite things to do with the Red Cross?
I like to ride in the back of the vehicles while Dave drives to fire calls (what a rush!). I enjoy hanging out
with everyone else who volunteers. I really like to fill the refrigerator with water and Gatorade.
What advice would you give to new volunteers?
New volunteers should do anything and everything. They should ask a million questions and talk to as
many volunteers as they can so they learn as much as possible and never be shy. I would also encourage
everyone to be deployed on a national disaster. The lessons you learn and the people you meet are
amazing.
