Dear Dr. Bruce,

I started this course with high expectations of improving my abilities as a scientific writer. I
believe this course has not only done so, but it has also opened my eyes to the ways in which
communication can be more effective by understand the importance of word order. By compiling
my work and showing the advancement I have made in my writing, I show that I have improved
and come to understand how taking into account the Student Learning Outcomes (SLO’s) have
made me a more effective communicator and scientific writer.

I chose to revise my Definition, which was the first major writing assignment in my first semester
back to academia. By pointing out “ micro- and macro- molecules” as well as promoting X-rays
as an invention that “has shaped the course of human history” I meet SLO 1 and 5, by writing in a
formal and informal manner to address different audiences without gender or cultural biases.
Through out my Definition I meet SLO 2, by using parenthetical citations as well as include a
literature cited page.I added an additional paragraph at the end to argument why X-ray
crystallography is a better imaging method than NMR, to show the consideration of SLO 3 and 6.

I organized my Definition using a historical model approach. Starting from its discovery, its
importance in different eras and its use in the present. By building up, I give strength to the final
conclusion. Following this model helps me show how I’ve incorporated organization with
persuasion (SLO 4 and 3). After the peer review session on my Definition, I was able to improve
my paper my making correction and improvements in wording which met SLO 6. Collaboration
with a peer as well as you yourself helped me improve the structure of my paper, and aided in
synthesizing my introduction to my paper.

It has been a couple of years since I have taken a English class, or even a writing class. Thanks to
being able to research, relearn and write about the research I was involved before leaving my
academic life, I got the chance to learn the history of x-ray crystallography, its mechanics, and
scientific jargon to catch up with the years I’ve been out of school.

Now that I am done this course, I am more confident and better prepared to meet the demands of
future courses and employers in my future.

Sincerely,

Silvestre Maganda
