Document Development Exposition: Instructions and Usability

ENGL 2116 | Spring 2018

Explain in detail your document’s development from planning to finish, describing your
challenges, how you overcame them, and what you learned.

Planning
The planning for this assignment was the most intensive of all. Mainly because it consisted of
so many different part. I first had to plan out my instructions, then my usability test then
finally my report. I guess you could consider everything as a part of the planning for the
report. Regardless my first step was to figure out what I was going to show people how to do
and have that thing be related to hedgehogs. The easy choice was to show people how to buy
a hedgehog. So that’s what I went with. The planning regarding the reports consisted of
evaluating how my original instructions relate to my usability test results.

First Draft
My first draft of the report was probably the most complete of all my first drafts. Most of the
content was there it was just all in the wrong place. My main challenge was making sure it
didn’t feel or look like I just copied and pasted from my usability test and results. Considering
most of my result were very similar from each person, it made it difficult to write a reflection
of any sort of length. Although my result didn’t give me much to work with somehow, I made
it work and not seem repetitive. I also revised my instruction of course, adding and changing
thing based off of the feedback I received from the usability test. Anything from adding
picture and separating information.

Second Draft
The second draft for this assignment wasn’t much more the further revision of grammar and
sentence structure. I took so much time of my first draft the most of the hard work was
already complete. The funny this is the most difficult part between my first and second draft
was getting the final version of the instructions to format properly. Everything seemed to
want to attach to the picture to where is would only show one step per page. I was kind of
frustrating and I wasn’t even able to fix it completely until my final draft. Other than that the
main part of my report was in presentable shape and I didn’t think anything more could be
added while still being useful.

Final Draft
The Final draft of the assignment consisted mainly of changes to the final version of the
instruction as is thought would be the case. My revisions consisted of everything from using
red boxes instead of arrows, blading focus items in each step and making the notes/warning
clearly visible and separate from the other steps. Reducing the size of the pictures solve my
issue of the step going on their own pages which was a frustrating relief. The only feedback I
received and that I changed for the report section of the paper was to use bock style
paragraphs. I don’t know why but I’m so used to tabbing in after I press enter.
