1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 PROJECT BACKGROUND

Lakes play an important role in helping irrigation as well as recharging ground water in the
surrounding areas. Lakes are an inherent part of the society in Indian culture and serve a variety of
purposes. The lakes of Ahmedabad, India serve as an oasis of tranquility in the midst of the hustle bustle
of the city life. Very peaceful and calm, the lakes provide a breathtaking view, thus making it a very
fascinating experience for the visitors.

SABARMATI RIVER: Sabarmati is one of the biggest rivers of north Gujarat. It originates from Dhebar lake
of rajasthan and meets with an Arabian sea. The river nourishes and fulfills a major part of water
requirement in Ahmedabad.

KANKARIA LAKE: It is a multisided lake that was built by Sultan Qutab-ud-Din in the year 1451 A.D. It is
basically an artificial lake with thirty four sides. The lake attracts good bird life and hence a popular spot for
bird watching. “Kamla Nehru hill garden and zoological park” is just near to this lake which is known for its
albino animals. It has a huge number of birds, mammals and reptiles.

CHANDOLA LAKE: It is a one of the water reservoir of city, Ahmedabad. Lake's water is used for irrigation
and other industrial purposes. There is a tomb of Shah Alam near the lake that is also a tourist destination.

VASTRAPUR LAKE: Vastrapur Lake is situated in western part of Ahmedabad. It is officially named after
Narsinh Mehta.

2.0 SCOPE OF STUDY

The scope of the study included to identify the locations where redevelopment of Lake Project could be
implemented. Two potential project sites Vastrapur lake & Chandola lake were identified during the course
of this study. The feasibility each of these sites was examined. This report documents the results of this
examination.

3.0 GENERAL SITE CONDITIONS

3.1 SITE DESCRIPTION

Vastrapur Lake is situated in western part of Ahmedabad right by the road. It lies quite near Nehru Park.
The nearest railway station to Vastrapur Lake is Ahmedabad junction train station which is 3 km away from
Vastrapur Lake. The water from Narmada River is allowed to flow into this lake. The lake almost dried up.

The site is surrounded by Sargam Marg. There are three suitable access points for entering in lake area.

Site- B Chandola Lake

Chandola Lake is located near Dani Limda Road, Ahmedabad, Gujarat state, India and covers an area of
1200 hectares. It is a water reservoir, embanked and circular in form. It is also home for cormorants, painted
storks and spoonbill birds .During the evening time, many people visit this place and take a leisure stroll.
Chandola Lake was established by the wife of a Mughal Sultan of Ahmedabad named Tajn Khan Nari Ali.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has ambitious plans for developing Chandola lake in a big
way.

3.7 APPROACH ROAD:

The site is surrounded by shah alam road in North West direction, Narol road in west & Nilgiri road in south
west direction. Adjacent to this lake, lies the tomb of Shah Alam. The domes of this tomb are ornamented
with gold and precious stones.

5.0 REGIONAL GEOLOGY

Ahmedabad is located on the banks of the River Sabarmati in the northern part of Gujarat and the western
part of India. It is located at 23.03°N 72.58°E spanning an area of 205 km². The average elevation is
53 meters.

There are 3 main lakes located in the city limits – the Kankaria lake, Vastapur lake and Chandola lake. The
city is located in a sandy and dry area. Except for the small hills of Thaltej-Jodhpur Tekra, the entire city is

almost flat. The Sabarmati bifurcates the city into eastern and western parts, connected by five bridges,
two of which were constructed after independence. Though the river is perennial, it gets dried up in the
summer, leaving only a small stream of water flowing.

There are typically three main seasons – summer, monsoon and winter. Barring monsoon, the climate is
very dry. The weather is very hot during the months of March to June with the average summer
temperature ranging from maximum 43 °C to minimum 23 °C. The months of November to February have
an average maximum temperature 36 °C and a minimum of 15 °C.
