“Hate Poem” SQ 1-6

1. The speaker of this poem writes about her boyfriend. She wants to make everyone as well

as herself believe that she hates her boyfriend. However, every details she tells shows that

she is deeply in love with her boyfriend.

2. The poem exemplifies the old saying that “There is a thin line between love and hate”. In

the poem she states multiple times that she hates her boyfriend. However, the details

show how she is really interested in her boyfriend. In this instance, hate might exist but

the details show her love for him.

3. The poem is more effective for never providing reasons for hatred. It shows how she

really loves her boyfriend and that love and hate exist in relationships.

4. I understand the last two lines to mean that she can never have enough hate for her

boyfriend. This means that she in reality will never get sick of hating and will not move

on but instead stay with her boyfriend due to her love. She thinks about her boyfriend

naturally like breathing but to often.

5. The poem is ironic in the sense that its title is called “Hate Poem”. The poem is really

about her love for her boyfriend.

6. The speaker does not really hate the person she addresses. She lists vivid details. It’s

almost as if she can’t stop thinking about her boyfriend. At the end she explains how

thinking about him is natural.
