THEME: CHANGE & ADAPTATION

i. WHAT IS PROJECT-BASED LEARNING (PBL)?

It is an approach to learning where students find the answers to a driving question that is based on a
real world challenge. Students actively investigate and explore significant content and learn skills
that are crucial to the process of answering the question.

ii. OBJECTIVES:
 To encourage and motivate students to use and develop their English language skills through
the completion of a meaningful and relevant project of their choice.

 To engage in an interdisciplinary approach using research skills, critical thinking, and problem
solving strategies by
i. extending a familiar topic;
ii. diving deeper into a lesson or topic learned in class;
iii. identifying problems in the community that are important to the students and
propose solutions.
iii. FORMULATE A DRIVING QUESTION
How to formulate a Driving Question:

1. The theme of 6 Yellow Class’s PBL is CHANGE & ADAPTATION.

2. Any topic chosen must be within the theme of CHANGE & ADAPTATION.

3. The topic may be based on any lessons learned in class or any issue that directly affects the
students and their community. The topic must be pursued from the perspective of CHANGE &
ADAPTATION.

Topics learned in class (example: concepts and ideas in Kensuke’s Kingdom such as sailing, journey and
the places/oceans the family had visited; geometry, algebra, ratio, and many other math topics; science
topics on matter, animals, etc.) may be extended or explored deeper.

4. After choosing a topic with a partner, think of a Driving Question. Starter questions are given
below to guide in the formulation of a driving question:

 How can we ______(do)__________________ so we can _____(why - change)____________?

 How did _____(noun ) ___________________ to adapt to ____________________________?

 In what way do ______ (noun) ____________ so that ______(why – change/adaptation____?

You may also come up with your own Driving Question. Ms. Chen must approve all Driving
Questions.

Characteristics of a good Driving Question:

1. The Driving Question should be open-ended. It means that it is not easily answerable by “yes” or “no.”

2. A good Driving Question should arouse the curiosity and encourage exploration of the topic that leads
to deeper insight and understanding.

3. The Driving Question should pull its answer from multiple disciplines.

4. The Driving Question should be open to different kinds of responses or products.

iv. INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING

The topic chosen for PBL must cover a range of disciplines.

There should be at least 2-3 disciplines covered by the topic. These disciplines may include: English
(Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening), Math, Science (Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Meteorology,
Paleontology, Astronomy, etc.), Art, Geography, History, Music, Physical Education, Technology, etc.

v. NEED TO KNOW LIST:

After deciding on a Driving Question, build a Need To Know (N2K) List on the topic. Your N2K
must include the disciplines that are included in your research project.

You are now ready to choose a specific Topic, write a Driving Question
and build your N2K List.
