CLASS PLAN PROPOSAL

Course: Comunicação Intercultural

Level: B1/B2
Proposed by: Mariana Mello and Natália Silva (IsF-UFJF)

Pre-listening activity
- Students read the transcription of the video “Brazilians are blunt! (American Culture
Shock in Brazil)”. Through the reading, we intend to activate the students' world
knowledge in order to prepare them for the context of the activity;
- After reading the transcription, students will be asked about what they believe to be the
image of Brazil that we usually send out to other countries;
- Students then watch the video (with neither subtitles nor the transcription);
- Possible doubts they might have are discussed;
- Students decide if they agree or disagree with what is stated in the video and explain
why.

Listening activity:
- Students watch the video “Is there a difference between Brazilian and European
Portuguese?” (with neither subtitles nor transcription);
- In pairs, they compare both languages and their stance regarding expressions and slangs
as well as cultural factors of linguistic influence, signaling similarities and differences.
- Each pair presents a similarity and a difference they have noticed based on the video;
- The teacher gives them an example of linguistic difference between American and
British English and asks if they know any other examples;
- The teacher then hands in a set of cards with words and expressions so that together the
students have to match the ones in British English and their correspondent in American
English;
- Possible vocabulary doubts they might have are discussed;
- Students tell if they have ever been through misunderstandings due to linguistic
differences.

Post-listening activity:
- Students watch the video “25 Huge Cultural Shocks That People Experience When
Traveling” (with English subtitles, if necessary);
- After watching the video, students pair up to participate in a role play where they pretend
to be new students from determined countries who will engage in a conversation and
display hypothetical signs of cultural shock;
- Students tell if they have ever experienced cultural shock in real life and suggest tips
that could be given to foreign students who might come study in Brazil.
