Standard #6: Assessment The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to

engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and

learner’s decision making.

Over the course of my student teaching so far I have been able to observe many different

forms of assessment to collect data on how student are doing with the concepts. The types of

assessment I have seen have been both formative and summative. I have also had the opportunity

to use the data from the assessments to plan instruction. The information that is gathered from

the assessments is instrumental to understanding what the students understand and do not

understand. It allows me to better create instruction for the students so that they are able to fully

understand the topic. The different forms of assessment have helped me greatly in planning

instruction as well as assessing how the students are doing with the subject.

Since I have been student teaching I have been able to see each class take some type of

summative assessment. I have administered some type of quiz or test with both my normal

periods as well as with my honors class. I was also able to grade these assessments which was

very helpful for me as I got to know the students. By being able to grade these assessments I was

able to learn how they were understanding the material as well as how in depth they were with

showing work on assessments. Through this information I was able to see how some students

who were not understanding the material were also not showing the work that would help them.

It was here that I could make sure that my instruction showed how important showing work was

to success. This assessment also showed me what we needed to review and who needed the

review the most. This form of assessment was very helpful to understand how the students

understood a topic.
I was also able to use information from formative assessments to help me with how they

are understanding the material. For example, I was able to use the homework that they fill out

online to see who is understanding the material to help me make groups based off what they need

more instruction with. By doing this I am able to help those who need it as well as challenge the

students who understand the topic. This feedback allows me to help with their struggles before a

summative assessment is given. We have also given entrance tickets that allow us to understand

what the students know. The information of these also gives us the opportunity to fix any

misconceptions that the students may have before they practice the skill incorrectly on their

homework. By addressing this early the students don’t get into bad habits with some of the new

information. Overall this assessment along with summative assessment is important to helping us

as teachers to know where the students need more instruction. By doing this we are able to help

our student succeed further in the topic.
