Vesak is a religious and cultural festival celebrated on the day of the full moon in
the month of May. It is celebrated by the Buddhists all around the world. It is the
day which Buddhists commemorate the important events that took place in the life
of Lord Buddha. Namely the birth of Siddhartha Gautama in Lumbini in Nepal
which took place under the arbor of Sat trees where queen Mahamaya gave birth to
him, the Siddharta Gautam’s supreme attainment as the Buddha, the Enlightened
One, the Lord Buddha’s Parinibbana over 2500 years ago at “Kusinara”.
There are many religious activities organized by the Buddhists during this period
such as Sil campaigns, Bodhi Pooja, Dansal, Vesak devotional songs (Bakthi Gee),
Pandols (Thoran) and lanterns. In every house decorations are done using lanterns,
buckets, bulbs etc. to commemorate this supreme day. The lighting of the lanterns
signifies an offering to the memory of the Buddha who delivered the message of
Dhamma. It is the most sacred day for the Buddhists around the world which they
received the preaching’s of the unchanging truth of life.
“No one saves us but ourselves. No one can, and no one may. We ourselves
must walk the path.”
~Lord Buddha~
In the Leostic year 2017/18, Leo Olympics, the most awaited sports
event of Leos was held on 7th of April 2018 at National Youth Centre
grounds, Maharagama from 8.00 a.m. onwards. This included almost
all the track and field events which the Leos were competitively
participated.
We, the Leo District 306A2 became the most colourful performing
party while the Leo District 306C2 became the best performing District
on the day.
By holding these events everyone witnesses that the Leoism is a best
path to develop the youth physically, mentally and socially.
Regret is a form of poison that can paralyze your life. In other words, it is a
punishment to yourself. It can either slow you down or totally mess up with
your journey of life. Therefore, you must never regret about anything that has
ever happened in your life. Something already happened belongs to the past.
So, it cannot be changed, undone or forgotten. What can only be done is, take
whatever the regret as a life lesson learned, and move on as a much stronger
soul with the experience you got.
As humans, it is natural to do certain things in accordance to the situations
you face, at different moments in life. Those things might be the best thing
you had to do at that point of life. But, later, when you turn back and look at
the past, it may bring worries with what you have done, while forgetting the
moments you faced. It may bring you the feeling that you made a mistake.
That is what we call as regret. But this may not be a long term feeling. It may be
temporary as per the age level you live in. With the time, when you get mature
you may look at those experiences in a wide angle and sometimes laugh at the
moments you regret or either thank them for making you strong. So, worrying
would not be there anymore, it will make you realize that how inexperienced
you were at that point of life. So, take regretting as just a short term negative
feeling, and overcome it to achieve your life goals as a better experienced one,
polished with your mistakes.
The day was filled with enjoyable events together with all the games related
with the New Year festival. The Leos and the Lions who were there enjoyed
the day and got the chance to win gifts by engaging in the games. “Aurudu
kumara” and Aurudu Kumari” was selected at the evening making it pleasurable
for the spectators.
This was a great chance to refresh bonds between Leos and Lions, and also it
was a better way to start a new year.

Notice
The quiz of the month of March will be
open to send the correct answer until the
end of July 2018.
Leos who participated to this event in both countries did their maximum to
entertain the children and bring laughter to their faded faces. A meal filled with
awurudu sweets was prepared at the children’s home, Baddegama and they were
able to join with different awurudu games and events. Finally we successfully
conclude both of the projects while passing the true message of Sinhala and
Tamil New Year.
