VI. ACTIVITIES
On August 8, 1967, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN),
a regional organization yearning for long lasting peace and cooperation, was
founded in Bangkok, Thailand. The five founding members of ASEAN were
Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Brunei
Darussalam, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, and Viet Nam later joined the
Association.

ASEAN covers a land area of 4.4 million square kilometers which is 3%

of the total land area of Earth. Since most ASEAN Member States are
surrounded by waters, its territorial waters cover an area about three times
larger than its land. The number of citizens of all ten Member States, if
combined, is approximately 625 million people! That’s 8.8% of the world’s
population.

The ASEAN Community has three pillars, namely the ASEAN

Political-Security Community (APSC), the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC)
and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC). These pillars are deemed
necessary for the progress and evolution of ASEAN and its peoples.

ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC)
The APSC pillar aims to promote peace and security in the Southeast Asian region. Each
Member State settles disputes in a peaceful manner.

Imagine yourself being the Philippines and your friends as the other countries. It’s better
to be at peace with them than having fights, because there will be times that you will
need each other’s help, support, and cooperation.

The APSC believes that political development is an important part of a progressive

community. It aims to bring about prosperity for all ASEAN citizens and seeks to achieve a
stable, democratic, and harmonious environment.

ASEAN Economic Community (AEC)

The AEC aims to achieve high economic growth in the region by increasing trade,
investment, and job creation.

This helps ensure that after you graduate, opportunities for jobs suited to your skills are
present with a salary that will provide for you and your family’s needs.

The initiatives under this pillar center on human resource development, information and
communication technologies, capacity building, poverty reduction, and improvement in
quality of life.

ASEAN also enhances living standards by improving food production, agriculture, forestry,
trade, health provisions, and other things that you will need in the future.

ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC)

The ASCC ensures that the welfare of the Southeast Asian peoples is at the center of
ASEAN’s priorities. This pillar aims to realize a people-oriented, people-centered, socially
responsible ASEAN Community that is united and has a common identity. ASEAN wants to
build a caring and sharing community.

ASEAN aspires to make the lives of every citizen, like you, comfortable, progressive and
worth living. Within the ASCC, ASEAN Member States cooperate in the areas of health,
education, environment, labor, social welfare, women and children, and culture and arts,
among others.

ASEAN envisions a community where each and everyone is treated equally. A society
where opportunities are only steps away. A region that strives to give the people not only
what they need, but also what they deserve.
