The long cherished dream of the people of Western Odisha came true, and the
indefatigable efforts of the academicians, intellectuals and political leaders of the region bore
fruit when Sambalpur University Act was passed on 10 December, 1966. Sambalpur
University came into being and became functional from 1 January, 1967, with Dr Parsuram
Mishra as the Vice Chancellor. Dr Zakir Hussain, the then President of India, laid the
foundation stone of the present campus on 5 January, 1968, at Jyoti Vihar, Burla, at a
distance of 15 kms from Sambalpur city and 7 kms from the famous Hirakud Dam. Since
1973 the administrative, academic and residential buildings of the University have been
located at the Jyoti Vihar campus sprawling over 630 acres of land amidst sylvan
surroundings.

Sambalpur University has 204 colleges affiliated to it. These are spread over 10 districts of
Odisha, namely Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Bargarh, Bolangir,
Subarnapur, Nawapara, Kalahandi, Boudh and Athmalik subdivision of Angul, which
constitute about one third of area of the state. The University has been trying to ensure high
academic standards in these colleges and fulfil the academic aspirations of thousands of
students, many of whom belong to economically backward and underprivileged sections of
the society.

The University has twenty-two Postgraduate Departments offering courses in thirty-four

subjects for M.A., M.Phil and PhD programmes. Within interdisciplinary framework the
departments have formed seven schools in the fields such as Languages and Literatures,
Social Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Bio Sciences, Bio-Social Studies, Physical Sciences
& Nuclear Physics and Chemical Sciences & Applied Chemistry. Many self-finance courses

M.A. in Performing Arts are special features of the postgraduate teaching programmes of
Sambalpur University. The central library of the University, named after reputed
academician Prof Bhubaneswar Behera, caters to the needs of the academic community with
its of stock of nearly 1 lakh 29 thousand books and 29 thousand back volumes. In addition,
the teaching departments have their respective seminar libraries.
Bus Services in the University campus
Campus traffic congestion is a common occurrence because of the factorial increase in
enrolment every year. Universities in the Sambalpur University, Sambalpur have to adjust to
the situation to appease the stakeholders, in particular the students. With affluent times, many
students have their own private vehicle which they drive or ride to school. However, most
public universities bar students' vehicles from campus if they were given on-campus housing
and on-campus transport is available. In the case of, due to the limited number of dormitories,
many students rent out. Consequently, they drive their own vehicles to class or for lesser-
affluent ones, the buses and taxis are the popular choices to commute. Thus, the influx of
these vehicles is the main cause of traffic congestion. This issue continues to be debatable
between the university administrators, the staff and the students. Also, the limited number of
parking spaces aggravates the situation, hence, the need to plan for an efficient and effective
bus system - the campus hybrid transportation system. In doing so, it is important to get the
bus passenger's feedbacks on the current transport services provided. In this case, the units of
analysis are the students which form the majority of the bus passengers. Thus, this paper
reports the pilot survey on student satisfaction with the campus bus service at the main
campus. Through a cross-sectional design, 60 completed responses were analyzed where
59.5% indicated dissatisfaction with the current bus service and 40.5% indicated satisfaction.
Furthermore, the comments from the respondents provided further evidence that the
transportation system on campus has to be reformed. The paper concludes with suggestions
for a hybrid transportation system planning, implementation and policy that would guide the
success of the project for all stakeholders.

Types of bus services

There are two types of Government-funded student bus services – fare charging and free.

Fare charging services

Students are required to pay a fare on bus services that travel to or from an urban or town
area, or wholly within an urban or town area. To access a discounted fare, students can
present either a cash, or a Rs. 15-ride ticket, which are available by contacting their bus
service operator.

Free bus services

Student bus services that operate wholly outside of an urban or town area, and travel to the
local home area school, do not charge a fare. These services are available to child students
only. Students do not need to present a bus pass or pay a fare to travel on this type of bus
service.
Need of Bus Services

Buses are the most important form of urban and rural passenger transport around the
world. Increases in population, shifting mobility patterns and a greater focus on
environmental issues are changing the face of public transport. Whether over short or long
distances, buses and coaches are one of the safest, greens, most user-friendly, affordable and
inclusive means of transport. Buses have been shaping sustainable mobility for more than a century.

The long and the short of it

Buses are the most common way to move people over short and medium distances in towns
and cities, as well as in most rural areas. They also play a crucial role in connecting different
modes of urban transit. Coaches move people comfortably across long distances and allow
people to explore new places through tourism. They are often the only means of long distance
transport for much of the world’s population.

Flexible, fast, green and clean

With minimal investment, new routes – across town or across countries – can be launched.
Buses and coaches are the most flexible, affordable and adaptable form of passenger
transport. Aside from reducing congestion, buses and coaches also have the lowest carbon
footprint per passenger of any form of motorised transport. And with fleets being constantly
renewed – at up to 10% per year in many countries – buses and coaches are leading the way
in implementing new low emission technology.

Community service

Buses and coaches play an important role in social cohesion, helping people, especially
those on low incomes, access education, work and healthcare. And they are often the only
transport option for people who don’t drive, have disabilities or live in remote areas.A key
link in the mobility chain, it is often a bus or coach that takes you to your final destination
once you get off the plane, train, tram or boat.
CHAPTER-II

Objectives of the Study

 To calculate the number of students satisfied and number of students dissatisfied from
the university bus services.
 To evaluate the facility of bus services
 To see if any changes are required in bus services.

CHAPTER-III

Research Methodology
The following methodology has been adopted for the study;
Data source: The data has been collected by students to students of Sambalpur University ,
Odisha.
Sample size and Sampling: We have used structured questionnaire and we used percentage
method for calculation . Primary data was collected from respondents of Sambalpur city
through a questionnaire designed for a sample of 60 respondents. Random sampling method
was adopted and selected. Then sum was calculated and then percentage was taken out .
Tools and technique: The data so collected have been analyses and presented in the form of
tables, simple averages, percentages and descriptive analysis.
CHAPTER-IV

Data analysis
No of students satisfied =
Total no of students selected yes option for that particular question
Total no of students * total no of questionnaire
=357/ 600 *100

=59.5%

No of students dissatisfied =
243./600*100
= 40.5 %
The findings are tabulated after measuring the feedbacks of each and every students.
Thus it was seen that many students are not satisfied with the bus service in the university
and some improvements must be done.

CHAPTER-V

Findings of the study

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between bus service satisfaction
and the transport mode of choice among university students in Sambalpur University . The
degree of bus service satisfaction was collected directly from questionnaire surveys, in which
university students were asked questions in relation to their satisfaction with the bus service
they used and their transport mode of choice. These questions were categorized into three
factors according to confirmatory factor analysis: service at bus stops, service of busses, and
service of drivers. Furthermore, the students were asked which mode of transport they used
given the choice between public and private transport. This study presents a structural equation
model to determine how much bus service satisfaction affects people's decisions about their
transport mode. The results from the analysis showed that three key factors—namely, service
at bus stops, service of busses, and service of bus drivers—were strongly correlated to the mode
of choice. In particular, the bus stop was strongly associated with ease of use, shade,
cleanliness, safety, and crowdedness level, while the bus itself influenced reliability, travel
time, and frequency. Complying with traffic laws and the driver's attitude were also important
contributors to the level of bus service satisfaction. Ultimately, this study will be beneficial for
policy/decision-makers. It will allow them to determine what needs to be accomplished to
encourage people to use public transportation.

CHAPTER-VI

Recommendations and Suggestions

Some important suggestions as given by respondents to improve the bus services are listed
below
 Starting of a new bus.
 Keeping the bus clean.
 Maintenance of bus should be done weekly or monthly
 The space in bus should be increased or a big bus should be started
 Staff and students separate buses should start.

CHAPTER-VII

Conclusion
All student want no obstacle in the path of their study. And a very minute problem can also
deviate their mind from their studies. Like in our study the bus service may be not looking like
a big problem but we found that there is a mixed view of satisfactions and dissatisfactions
among the students. Some facilities are good inside the bus service ass described by the
students but there are still many directions to work on for a better service. As this University
is the biggest destination for education the students and parents have many expectations from
this University. And like the other development strategies the University regulatory bodies
should also have to think about this problem and have to take some necessary steps for a better
service for the students’ satisfaction by providing those extra facilities mentioned in our
findings for which the students will be obliged..
