Computers, digital data, and what’s been the real changer - mobile wireless
communications - have both changed the way we do our jobs, and have
created new sorts of work. That goes for private security as for any other
sector. As for the speed of the change - that we don’t notice as we dash from
day to day - it was a lesson to hear Ed Bateman of the Security Industry
Authority at the latest Security TWENTY conference last month in Harrogate
(page 18). The SIA set off a dozen years ago to give door staff and contract
security guards and CCTV control room operators, mainly, a badge. To apply,
you sent your application and papers in the post. It’s all done online now. And
now the regulator faces things undreamt of in the 2000s; the ‘gig economy’ of
hearing about and being given work through social media, which can bypass
guarding contractors altogether (or that provides an invaluable, up to the
second source of sub-contract labour). Criminals, surprise, surprise, are taking
to new media the same as the rest of us, as an outlet for offering bogus
identity documents (page 41). The need to secure our very identities against
criminals who would steal them for their own gain, and yet the need to have
digital identities, to pay for things on the go, means that society has to ask
itself: does it require infants to have a biometric taken, as a basic means of
identification (page 42). And the prospect is only of more of the same.
Artifical intelligence and machine learning will use and create yet more data
(page 68), for business and leisure use, including for security services.
Tot it all up, and we cannot do without the tools we already take for granted.
We know that, as our lives come to a halt if the devices break or are jammed
by a ransomware attack. The threats of the past, from bombs and knives, are
still around; we have merely added cyber threats. Young people take their
connectedness for granted, and why shouldn’t they; they have nothing else as
a comparison. It remains the task of private security people to give wise
counsel, whether to charity workers and others going into hostile regions
(page 34) or ‘bleisure’ travellers rounding off a business trip with a weekend
of leisure (page 36). The security job is a sort of sales one, of convincing
non-security people to listen, and of keeping up to date with current affairs.
That can make it tiring, and yet stimulating. If that does not come across in
these pages, then I have failed.
