Catcher in the Rye: Holden’s Psyche Poster Project

Throughout this unit we’ve used a psychoanalytic lens to explore Catcher in the Rye. Now, on our last
day with the novel, we will try to psychoanalyze Holden, explaining our interpretation through art.

Poster components:
1. A portrait of Holden that captures who he is.
2. Drawings of three important moments, people, or ideas that have shaped Holden. Each of these
depictions should be accompanied by a quote from the text (cited) that shows the importance of
this aspect of Holden’s life.
3. Representations of two psychological components of Holden--his id, ego, or superego, and/or his
use of a defense mechanism in a particular situation (or generally). Identify which aspects of
psychoanalytic theory these drawings depict.
