Excel XL-40 Bronze Alloy

An Excellent Substitute for Grey Iron Spider Bushings

Spin Casting Offers

Strength & Durability
Tighter Grain Structure
Excel Foundry and Machines bronze alloy XL-40 has a
much tighter grain structure than the grey iron used in
the standard OEM bushing and is much less abrasive.
The casting method Excel uses also provides a major
improvement. The sand casting product provided by the
OEM is greatly inferior to Excel’s permanent mold spin
cast bushing.

Not only will the coarse grey iron bushing wear quicker
than the XL-40 but so will the mating part (the more
expensive main shaft sleeve). The grabbing effect
caused by this looser grain structure in the grey iron
will cause scouring more quickly and intensely than our
XL-40 bushing.

Higher Tensile Strength

The grey iron bushing has a tendency to begin to break up
as it begins to wear, especially near the oil seal. The main
cause for this is grey iron’s relatively low tensile strength.
Grey iron has a tensile strength of 40,000 psi while
the XL-40 has a tensile strength of 110,000 psi. This
strength is a major defense against the abuse that can
cause a grey iron bushing to break up. XL-40 is designed
to have the same hardness (220 BHN) as the grey iron
and therefore the added strength does not create a
problem by making the bushing too hard.

For Spider Bushings...

Bronze Works Better with Steel
The XL-40 being a bronze alloy also has the inherent
advantage of being a dissimilar material to the
steel of the main shaft sleeve. The result is a less
abraisive interaction between the main shaft sleeve
and the spider bushing, thus resulting in longer wear
life for both components.
