ABOUT:

Situated at Lagankhel near Sat Dobato, Patan industrial area is known for handicrafts such as wood carvings,
metalcraft, handwoven 1woolen carpets and thanka paintings.

are on exhibition. Industry is the mean of
earning. Industries are necessary for the
developing for a country. Individual people
also benefit from industries. Some of these
advantages of industries are as follows:
1. Industries utilize various local resources
that are found in abundance in country.
2. Industries provide works and
employment for the growing population of the
country.
3. The burden on agriculture will be less
when industries employ more people and
produces varieties of things for our use.
4. Industries develop agriculture by producing equipment and artificial manure.
5. Industrial products can be exported and thus we can on by selling things produced in the industries.
6. Industries help to develop the art and craft of a country.
7. Industries help to raise the standard of living.
8. Industries help to develop transport and communication and other development works.
9. Industries make the country self-sufficient. We have to import fewer things from other countries when our
industries produce the things of our need.
10. Above all, industries develop the economy of country.
Some of the evident industries in the Patan Industrial area are as follows:
 Cottage Industry:

The traditional industries that are being carried on in village in small scale are called cottage industries.
These industries use local materials to produce varieties of things for our daily use.
 Tourist Industries:

The tourist industry plays and important role in the economic life of the country. It helps us to earn
foreign currency. People learn from the tourists about their way of life, civilization and development.
Various Souvenir industries are flourishing due to tourism.
 Medium and Large-Scale Industries:

These are the large or medium scale industries that can provide employment to a large number of people
at a time.

DETAIL FINDINGS:

Patan Industrial district was established in the year 1963 A.D, under the Indian assistance with infrastructural
facilities such as developed lands, boundary walls, electricity distribution network, drainage system, industrial
sheds and warehouses.

Patan Industrial area has a total area of 293 ropanies, out of which 293 ropanies are well developed. The land
occupied by service sector are 73 ropanies. Currently there are 112 industries established inside the district out
of which 102 industries are in operation. The investment the private sector has invested in the industries
grosses more than 170 crores, while the government sector investment is 4.01 crores.

Patan Industrial district has its own electricity distribution network. The total power consumption by this
Industrial area is 2500KVA. District has its own water boring system, water supply systems as well as water
filtration plant. The total water consumption here per day is 288 kilo liters per day. District has a total road
network of 5 km.

A very large Tibetan refugee camp that was established in the sixties in the south-western outskirt of the old
core of Patan has now become its important part in terms of craft products. Carpets produced in this area have
a significant market in European countries and provide a vibrant economic base to Patan.

PRESENT CONDITION AND FUTURE GOALS

The Industrial district of Patan has total 112 industries. The detail about the number of industries and their present
condition is given in the table below. 5 industries have now become defunct. Newer industries are being
constructed in the area. The industries in the Patan Industrial area provide employment to about 1586 people.

SUMMARY

Industrial estates located in Patan was established in 1963 with he aid from India. Since then the Patan industrial
area spanning in the area of 293 ropani has been running the cottage and small industries. The government
provided the land and buildings for the industrial estates, but the industries themselves were mostly privately
owned. The Private Sector involvement is also evident in the investment as shown by the 170-crore investment
from private sector as compared to the 4.01 Crore from the governmental sector.

The main industry flourishing in the Patan Industrial Area are the Hand Crafts, Wood Carvings, Metal Carvings
and the Tourism Industry. The Patan Durbar Square ancient beauty and culture lures commendable number of
tourists every year. With the Tourist industry, the handicrafts and souvenir shops of the area are flourishing.

The Patan Industrial area has many small scaled industries, 112 to be precise, out of which 102 are in operation
and 5 are under construction. The Patan Industrial area has become somewhat self-reliant due to the heavy
private sector investments.

Recruitment of craftsmen from Patan to other parts of the country by then rulers had retained craftsmanship
within Patan. After a gap of three centuries, growing tourism and the appreciation of traditional skills by the
tourists is playing the same role and craft has once again become a source of inspiration and income.

Traditional painting has found a new expression and several shops located in the Patan Durbar area frequented
by tourist display a collection of new water color painting depicting scenes of local life style. Souvenir and craft
shops in the tourist frequented sections of the town as well as traditional workshops of the metal and wood
workers in town and in Patan Industrial District provide a significant array of new products directed towards the
tourist market and exports. To a minor extent, these innovations have also created a domestic consumer market
