Continuous Assessment Interior Architecture

CA1 – Hacking AIR3

Project Description:

This project is being ran in Collaboration between Orangebox Design and Ireland’s leading
workplace supplier Walls to Workstations (W2W). This design competition is seeking ideas
to create a new generation of work pods that utilises the engineering and performance
finesse of Orangebox’s Air3. But reimagines how this could be hacked to create a new
vernacular of individual pods.

Learning outcomes

• Interpreting a brief in a coherent manner and addressing its requirements

• Research and decipher relevant information from technical documents, primary and
secondary research
• Analyse and accommodate the influencing factors
• Plan, formulate and present a viable design proposal
• Prepare and deliver a professional presentation of Visual and Technical drawings

Assignment Instructions

Students should sign up to the Orangebox AIR3 Competition which is linked to on the IA
Moodle Page. They will then receive an Information Pack. This will give in-depth details as to
the design constraints and assumptions. The Pack contains a Company Description, project
brief and guidelines. These are to be adhered to where necessary. However educated
assumptions should be used for matters that aren’t covered.

Constraints and assumptions (Not exhaustive; confirm with Orangebox Competition Pack)

• Hacked design must be built onto or from existing Aluminium Frame

• The doors must be retained or replaced to retain structural integrity
• The roof system must be retained
• Lighting can remain or be adapted with the controls in the Aluminium column
• The current Acoustic performance of the AIR3 must be matched or advanced in the
hacked design
• The Pod must not be a fixed structure, if not as mobile as the current design it must
have a reusable element to the design
• Optimum Noise insulation is augmented by having the Pod located on carpet

Requirements
A major component of this CA is correctly deciphering and interpreting what the
requirements are from the Competition Pack.
Pay particular attention to the terminology used, judging criteria and technical specification.
A professional approach should be maintained in language and presentation.

Continuous Assessment Interior Architecture

Assessment Criteria: %
Research – Design and Technical 20
Conformity with the brief/Implementation of set guidelines 30
Coherence of CAD, Sketching or Visuals 30
Final Design presented in professional manner 20
Total 100%
Appendix

General:
Your proposals will be relatively simple, yet informative CAD drawings/ Sketches/ Visuals or Pictures
of models of a suitable standard for communication with a client.

In difference to previous design projects you may have had. All design work will not be graded and
should not be included in your final submission. Rather just the final A1 Submission will be graded

It will have graphic and written elements.

The final design will be marked on how well it fulfils the brief generated by Orangebox. You may
however adapt the AIR3 to a specific user profile you have prepared. You can explain the rationale
behind picking a specific user in your submission.

Use of Downloaded images must carefully adhere to competition rules

Your report will be marked on the evidence submitted that shows to what extent you have engaged
with the design process as set out in class. All reference and research material must be correctly
referenced throughout (Harvard Style).

Research Sources
Primary research is key to the success of your submission. Secondary research is provided in
the Competition Pack. It can be augmented by further study of Journals or through Market
Contacts. In terms of seeking aesthetic inspiration our library has various design
publications. Barber Osgerby and Inspiration in the Interior Design Section especially so.
However in creating a ‘new vernacular’ local surroundings, Irish landscapes and work
environments could inform here. Conjecture and assumption should not inform your design.

Submission:
You are required to submit a Hardcopy (A3) along with an A4 sheet showing any referencing in the
Harvard Style. You will need to include a ‘key number’ on your hardcopy but may not wish to include
this in your Softcopy. Upload a softcopy (A1 PDF) to Moodle on the due date. Non submission of
either your hardcopy or Moodle upload will mean you have missed the deadline and your project
will not be graded.

You are not required to mount your Hardcopy submission on Foam core. Sheet form will suffice.

Deadline: 1pm, Friday 16th October 2015
