Brandon Allen and Hunter Crouse Commented [1]: Overall, great information!

My only
suggestion would be to make this a bit more visually
Digital Literacy appealing by using different colored fonts (where
applicable) and/or a few more images to represent the
tools.

Grade: 11th
Digital Citizenship Tenet: Digital Literacy- is an
individual's ability to access both information
and methods of communication through a
technologic tools including, but not limited to,
smartphones, tablets, laptops, and traditional desktop PCs.[1] A digitally
literate person should also be able to successfully analyze, search for, and
critically evaluate information presented on the web.

Impact of Digital Literacy

Impact: K-12 schools
With the increased implementation of technology in the classroom K-12
schools need to put more of a focus on digital literacy now more than ever.
It is one thing to use the technology in the classroom, but if educators and
students are not digitally literate enough then the purpose of the technology
will not be met. K-12 schools need to be teaching digital literacy throughout
grade levels going more in depth with each grade. Starting with simply
accessing the internet and tips on internet safety to how to find credible
information. Working with students and educators on digital literacy will
improve their abilities with each of the other 8 tenets of digital citizenship.
You have to learn how to read and navigate the internet before you can
understand digital law, digital rights and responsibilities, and digital health
and wellness.

Impact: Educators
This tenet is important for educators to teach and understand. With a world
expanding more and more to online our educators must know how to
navigate it effectively. If educators are not digitally literate then students will
not be ether. Knowing how to navigate the internet is a skill that all people
regardless of their career need to know. If educators are to set-up students
for success then need to be able to teach digital literacy.
Impact: Students
This is important so students are using credible sources that will help them
find the right information. There are many websites online that the
information can be edited which allows people to put whatever they want.
One of those websites is Wikipedia because it can have multiple editors.
This tenet is also important for students because it not only deals with how
to find credible sources, but includes skills that students will need to
navigate the internet in every way. This includes internet safety, effective
communication, critical thinking and evaluation, and cultural and social
understanding.

List ideas for integrating this topic into daily instruction.

-Students will be informed of the negatives of not knowing how to find
credible sources. This will give students an explanation of the importance
of learning about digital literacy. Students will be given a digital literacy
assignment where they are given a number of websites and they have to
explain why or why not that source is credible or not. This will help them
determine the fastest way to notice if a source is legitimate .
Students will be provided with:
● Computers
● Internet access
● Writing utensils
● Google Chrome
● Google Doc with the list of websites
○ Examples of websites
○ Gale: https://www.gale.com/
○ Wikipedia: https://www.wikipedia.org/
○ Fox News: http://www.foxnews.com/
○ CNN: https://www.cnn.com/
○ Debate.org: http://www.debate.org

- The mini lesson would start by giving students an internet safety quiz.
This quiz can be found here: https://www.proprofs.com/quiz-
school/story.php?title=internet-safety-quiz-high-school-students After
students complete the quiz we will as a class discuss the answers and
discuss why they are the answers. After the quiz i would give students a list
of online safety tips. We would review the sheet as a class and why each
tip is important. This lesson could be done at the beginning of the year or to
start out a unit that has to do with research. I would then end the lesson
with a youtube on internet safety so they get another way form of
representation. . Depending on the grade level the video would vary. For
our purposes of high school the video would be:
● Safe Web Surfing: Top Tips for Kids and Teens Online:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrln8nyVBLU
Having students understand internet safety will greatly improve their digital
literacy in and out of the classroom.
Tools:
● Computer
● Internet safety tip sheet: https://www.nypl.org/help/about-nypl/legal-
notices/internet-safety-tips
● Writing utensil
● Access to youtube

- Before students start a research project they will receive instruction on

tips for effective search strategies. It is one thing to know how to find a
credible source, but it is another to find what you need within that source.
Students would start by watching a video on effective research strategies.
● Online Research: Tips for Effective Search Strategies:
https://youtu.be/LTJygQwYV84
Once students have watched the video they will complete a mini research
workshop where they have to find specific articles online and pull
information from them. Students will then formulate thei information they
find in a word document
Tools students will need:
● computer/tablet
● Access to class padlet
● List of articles to search for(found on class padlet)
● List of objectives for what they will need to find in articles(found on
class padlet)
● M
