Research Conference
Healthcare providers, community advocates, finan-
cial institution representatives, RCMP officers and other
community partners who support vulnerable adults are
invited to attend an interactive three-part workshop fea-
turing leading experts on adult vulnerability.
The workshop ‘Rural Communities & Supporting Vul-
nerable Adults, is to be held Wednesday, May 30 from 10
am to 2 pm at The Prestige Lakeside Resort, Nelson. The
fee is $65 and includes lunch.
Vulnerable adults are people who face limits in their
decision-making capacity, arising from advancing
dementias or other conditions that affect a person’s cogni-
tive abilities. Limitations may include the ability to under-
stand information relevant to things like their money
management, living situation or conditions, or health
care. The workshop will explore types of vulnerability
and abuse, advance care planning and Medical Orders for
Scope of Treatment. Participants will work through a pro-
gressive case study, directly applying their own expertise
and experience to a real life scenario.
The second presentation, ‘PechaKucha: Rural Perspectives
on Community & Health’ will be held Thursday, May 31 from
7:30 pm to 9 pm at the Prestige Lakeside Resort in Nelson.
This a free event, open to the public and chocolate is provided!
Rural communities are vibrant, resilient places where
people lean into their unique strengths and resources as
they navigate health systems with urbanized centres. This
evening will feature brief, visually engaging presentations
aimed at sparking dialogue about issues of rurality. Pre-
senters will speak to 20 slides for 20 seconds each, offering
the audience food for thought to drive casual conversa-
tion in response. Anyone interested in promoting health,
vibrancy and wellness in a rural community are encour-
aged to attend this free event, however space is limited.

MS Walk in Nelson
On Sunday, May 27, in communities across the province,
over 3000 participants will come together for British Colum-
bia’s annual MS Walk to raise funds for and help change the
lives of Canadians living with multiple sclerosis (MS).
Canada has the highest rate of MS in the world. The dol-
lars you raise are invested in world leading MS research
and to help fund stem cell research, discover what causes
MS and advocate for accessible and low cost treatments.

Archery anyone?
I fell in love with the sport of archery three years ago in
Rock Creek. My husband and I were invited to a 3D archery
shoot with friends, who have enjoyed archery for a long time.
As I had no experience with archery, I was given a bow
and arrows, an armguard to protect my arm from the
bowstring hitting it and a glove to prevent my fingers from
becoming irritated from drawing the bowstring. I headed
off with an experienced group to discover what 3D archery
was all about. What I discovered was a sport that com-
bined walking in the forest, or through a meadow, along a
preset path interspersed with life-sized three dimensional
animal targets, positioned in their natural setting.
I was terrible! My arrows would fly way over the tar-
gets. The group of archers I was with were totally under-
standing and target after target they would search for my
arrows. Despite my poor performance, I knew that there
was something very special about this sport and I decided
I needed to find a facility where I could practice.
Then I discovered that the Nelson Rod and Gun Club
and Conservation Society had an indoor archery lane
where I could practice. The archery club is a small, but
growing group who meet every Tuesday evening from 6
pm to 7:30 pm. Experienced archers welcome beginners
and offer tips to improve their skills, plus the club has the
necessary equipment to get started.
Recently, we brought in an archery instructor and plan
to do this again as the need arises. The club also travels
together to 3D shoots in the area. We have dedicated vol-
unteers who are working hard to organize our own 3D
archery shoot on Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3 at
the outdoor range on Porto Rico Road off Highway 6.
Archery is a fun sport for the whole family. If you are
interested in giving archery a try, contact our archery

Elder Abuse
The Nelson & Area Elder Abuse Prevention Program
(EAPP) is pleased to announce the release of the updated
‘Prevention of Elder Abuse: A Nelson & Area Resource
Manual’. Financial support for this update came from the
Nelson Seniors Coordinating Society and the BC Associa-
tion of Community Response Networks.
The Manual is available in binder format with 30 Nel-
son and rural community partners (e.g. Service Provid-
ers, Churches, Library, Seniors Associations, Community
Services etc). The Manual is also available on line at www.
nelsonelderabuseprevention.ca
Elder abuse affects people of all races, religions and
socio-economic status. Increased education, awareness
and early intervention are the cornerstones to reducing
the incidents and impact of elder abuse. Please review
either format of the ‘Prevention of Elder Abuse: A Nel-
son and Area Resource Manual’ for further information
on the prevention, early detection and reporting of elder
abuse.
It takes a community and individual actions to build
a society where adults are free from abuse, neglect and
exploitation. For additional information or an appoint-

126th Annual Kaslo

Kaslo is buzzing with the excitement of
our May Days celebration. Every year
at this time since 1892 our sleepy little
town wakes up!
The first event to mark the dawn of
summer and Queen Victoria's birthday
took place one year before the Village of
Kaslo was incorporated as The City of
Kaslo, making 2018 the 126th consecu-
tive year celebrating May Days in Kaslo.
There’s so much to do and take in! Both
Saturday and Sunday, spectators at Log-
ger Sports are in for thrills as they watch
the amazing focus and athletic skills of
the competitors.
At the centre of Vimy Park you can stroll
through an outdoor market. Enjoy some
‘home cooking’ from the food trucks
while you listen to live music, or take in
a slo-pitch game. There are a number of
old-fashioned games for the kids and a
clown too. Take a helicopter ride and get
a bird's eye view!
Bigger and even better every year, the
Show and Shine on Front Street is an
amazing spectacle of unique and rare
cars and antique engines.
Monday morning is a great time to pick
up local plants at the Garden Festival at
the top of Front Street while you wait for
the parade to start. Then tag along with
everyone down to Vimy Park to watch
the most beloved event of Kaslo May
Days: the Maypole dance.
In celebration of Kaslo’s 125th anniver-
sary, new handmade costumes for the
dancers were sewn by Elaine Richinger
and new ribbons ordered from England.
As a fundraising event to support this,
there will be a sponsored dance executed
by former Maypole dancers. It will take
place on Monday, May 21st in the after-
noon. Some of them are dancing with
their original partners!! Contact any
one of them to offer a pledge or you
can contribute at the time of the dance.

SD8 helping students make
friends and see the world
Kootenay Lake School District (SD8) is currently host-
ing 149 international students from 15 different countries
for this 2017 – 2018 academic year. This is the largest
international student enrollment to date, with attendance
at 11 different schools throughout the district.
An additional 20 students from China will be arriv-
ing mid-April, joining the classrooms and activities at
Trafalgar Middle School. These particular international
students attend off shore BC schools in their home coun-
try, are already immersed in the BC curriculum and have
fairly good language skills before they even arrive. Their
primary motivation for coming is the desire to learn
about Canadian culture and develop relationships. But
do they?
Intercultural projects aim to engage our students and
help them to embrace cultural diversity and globalization.
The District’s International Program department has rec-
ognized that engaging one of the most important stake-
holders, our domestic students, is the key to the success
of interculturalizing the program for both incoming and
outgoing students!
“We’ve hosted international students in our schools for
over 15 years, but ever since we started sending Cana-
dian students abroad, we have noticed how exposing our
students to travel and new cultural experiences empow-
ers them to befriend International students upon their
return.” explains Sandy Prentice, International Program
Administrator for SD8. “They are no longer afraid to
approach them and go out of their way to include them in
class projects and social outings.”
Offering opportunities to Canadian students to travel
and study abroad is a proven way to empower our youth
to embrace diversity, seek out global friendships, not to
mention that study abroad experiences are said to be one
of the most rewarding and exhilarating experiences in a
person’s life.
