SENTENCES.

The red panda is a medium-sized bear-like mammal that weighs between three
and six kilograms. A smaller relative of the giant panda, it has a thick rusty-
coloured fur. The muzzle and the front of the large pointed ears are white. The
cheeks have broad white patches. Its long and bushy tail has widespread concentric
rings of brown and ginger. The nose is black and there are long white whiskers
protruding from the sides of the mouth.
The red panda can be found in Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, India, Myanmar, Laos and
Sichuan, Yunnan and Xizang provinces in western China. These places from the
span of the Himalayan Mountain range where bamboo forests can be found at
heights of between 1800 and 4800 metres.
Although bamboo leaves form its main diet, the red panda also eats food like
berries, mushrooms, grasses and bark as well as meat like insects, bird’s eggs,
nestlings and small rodents. It is very particular about which part of the bamboo
plant it eats. Only the most tender young leaves and shoots are chosen. The red
panda then chews each mouthful of leaves and shoots thoroughly.

1
The red panda has a digestive system of carnivore, consisting of a simple
stomach and short intestine. This makes it very difficult for it to digest wood fibre.
As bamboos are high in indigestible fibre, the red panda must spend as 13 hours a
day searching for and eating bamboo in order to survive.
In recent years, the red panda has become vulnerable to extinction. As the
human population increases, more forests are being cut down at an alarmingly fast
rate. This, together with red panda’s specialized diet, has made the red panda
endangered species.
