Analysis Artifact

The artifact I chose for the analysis component is the Into The Wild essay. I received this

assignment in my ERWC class during my senior year. The objective of this essay was to analyze

the thoughts and actions of a character in the book and come up with one word to describe the

character. In addition I had to use examples from the book to enforce why I chose the word to

describe that character. The word I ultimately chose to use to describe the character was reckless.

The Into The Wild essay is a analysis artifact because we had to read the book and a

analyze the personality of a particular character in the book, Chris McCandless. I looked at the

different thoughts and actions Chris McCandless conveyed throughout the story. One of the

characteristics Chris showed was recklessness because he left to travel on his own without telling

his family. Another time Chris was reckless was when he left everything he possessed and

needed to survive so that he can live off nature. This artifact showed the value of analyzing and

assessing characters and situations.

My school emphasizes the importance of using SLOs or student learning outcomes. There are

four SLOs that we must strive to achieve. They are active citizen, critical thinker, effective

communicator, and willing collaborator. The SLO I showed by doing this artifact is critical thinker. I was

a critical thinker by analyzing and assessing a character’s personality and characteristics in different

situations in a story. I also structured my essay in a manner that was easy for the reader to understand and

read. Another way I showed critical thinking was comparing the characteristics of one character to other

characters.
Something I can take away from this assignment are analytical skills. Since I am really good at

observing my surroundings I can begin to analyze certain situations to get a better understanding of what

is happening. In addition, I can also analyze a problem and come up with a ways to solve it. I will be

able to use these skills in the future with school, work, and in my daily life whenever a problem arises. I

will be able to use this skill when I am working on coding or programming by analyzing the data and

coming up with various solutions to fix and improve the program. However, something I can still improve

on is my the ability to understand the reason behind of my observations.
