Chapter 7.1
Ratios and Proportions
Ratios

Ratios - a way to compare two quantities

Ratios can be written three ways
1) a:b
a) 3:1
2) a to b
a) 3 to 1
3) a/b
a) 3/1
Reduce ratios the same way you reduce fractions

Theorem:
Definitions: If two polygons are similar,
Polygons whose corresponding then the ratio of their
angles are congruent and whose perimeters is equal to the
corresponding sides are proportional ratios of their corresponding
are called similar polygons. side lengths.

Scale factor: If two polygons

are similar, then the ratio of
the lengths of the two
corresponding sides is the
scale factor.

In a right triangle, the sum of the squares of the lengths of the legs in equal
to the square of the length of the hypotenuse

c

b
Formula
a2+b2=c2
- C always has to stay where it is but b and a can be
switched
Pythagorean Triples:
A set of nonzero whole numbers a, b, and c that satisfy
the equation
Formula: a2+b2=c2
Examples:

3, 4, and 5

9 + 16 = 25
Theorem 8-2

Chapter 8.5
Angles of Elevation and Depression
Definition

Angle of elevation- the angle of elevation of an object as seen

as an observer is the angle between the horizontal and the
line from the object to the observers eye (the line of sight)

Angle of depression- if the object is below the level of the

observer, then the angle between the horizontal and the
observer's line of sight is called the angle of depression
