SECTION 1 – GENERAL
1 OVERVIEW
This specification covers Particular Requirements for the design, manufacture,
testing and shipment of Form–Wound Squirrel Cage Induction Motors – 250
Horsepower and Larger – as detailed in API Standard 541, for use in oil refineries,
gas plants, chemical plants, exploration and production facilities, and
supply/marketing installations owned by PDVSA.
This specification along with the Owner’s Induction Motor Data Sheet (Appendix
“A”) and the requirements of API Std 541 shall be considered complementary.
Any conflict among them shall be referred to the Owner for clarification before
proceeding with design and manufacture.
The following clauses are exceptions, additions or new clauses (sub–clauses) to
API Std 541. Clauses that are not mentioned herein shall remain applicable as
written. When the word “should” appears in the API Std 541, it must be substituted
by “shall” and, therefore, considered mandatory.
The additional requirements or clarifications specified herein are required in order
to:
a. Make selections from options given in the API Std 541.
b. Specify additional and more stringent requirements, as necessary, to
operate and maintain motors according to PDVSA practices.
The following paragraph numbers refer to those used in API Std 541 or added in
this specification.
2.1 General
2.1.3 (Exception)
In order to comply with Venezuelan requirements concerning exposure of plant
personnel to noise (COVENIN 1565), individual noise sources shall be limited,
where possible, to the following sound levels:
– 85 dBA at 1 meter from the source of the noise. The Manufacturer shall achieve
this condition as a contractual requirement for the equipment in its basic state
(i.e. no special sound treatment provisions).
– Noise levels of up to 88 and 91 dBA are considered acceptable where exposure
levels are less than 4 and 2 hours, respectively.
2.1.15 (New)
Interchangeability of same rating motors shall be pursued.
2.2.1.2 (Exception)
Unless otherwise specified in Appendix “A”, motors rated 250 hp and larger shall
be medium voltage. System voltage ratings and characteristics will be designed
for single voltage service according to ANSI C84–1.
2.2.2.3 (New)
Medium voltage coils shall have corona suppression coatings.
2.2.3.3 (New)
Motors shall comply with the driven speed–torque requirements over their entire
starting range, at 80 percent rated voltage, unless a lower voltage is specified in
Appendix “A”. Motors shall be capable of accelerating during start–up as well as
(where applicable) reaccelerating the driven equipment after a momentary power
interruption with a minimum of 20% margin, including inertia and load torque and
with the voltage at the motor terminals mentioned above.
When the driven equipment load inertia values are not known, the NEMA load
inertia values shall be used.
For motors supplied as part of rotating equipment packages, inertia of the driven
equipment shall be as identified by the Bidder having unit responsibility.
2.2.4 (Addition)
For very critical applications where instantaneous restarting is required (as
specified in appendix “A”), motors shall be capable of withstanding automatic
reacceleration with full opposite residual voltage, under full load conditions.
2.2.5.3 (Exception)
When the motor speed/torque curve, at the conditions specified in 2.2.5.2.a or b,
is plotted over the load speed/torque curve, the motor torque shall exceed the load
torque by a minimum of 20 percent at all locations throughout the speed range,
up to the motor breakdown torque point.
2.2.5.5 (New)
For motors driving reciprocating or other machinery having a pulsating load, the
Motor Manufacturer shall ensure that the rotating equipment train will have
sufficient rotational inertia:
– to keep the irregularity factor within the values specified by the Driven
Equipment Manufacturer.
– to limit the variations of the current to values not exceeding 66% of the peak
value of the rated full load current, unless a lower figure is specified in Appendix
“A”.

2.2.6 (Addition)
Motors connected to captive transformers shall be capable of overcoming the
inertia of the load and accelerate the load to rated speed with 70 percent of the
rated voltage at the motor terminals, without damages from overheating. The
Bidder shall be responsible for checking the starting time for critical situations,
such as starting at reduced voltage of driven equipment with high inertia and/or
high brake torque. Bidder shall submit the calculations to Owner.
2.2.6.1 (Exception)
At any voltage between 80% and 100% of rated voltage, motors, including their
unit transformer, shall be capable of:
1. Three successive starts with the motor initially at maximum ambient
temperature
2. Two successive starts with the motor initially at full load operating
temperature
3. One start every hour after (1) and (2) but not exceeding four starts in a 24
hour period.
2.2.7.d (Addition)
Motor losses will be evaluated at $2000/kW, unless otherwise specified in
Appendix “A”.
2.4.5.1.5 Exception
For motors rated over 3700 kW (5000 hp), the shaft shall be provided with an
integral shaft hub flange.
2.4.5.2.2 Exception
Cast or fabricated aluminum cage designs are not acceptable.
2.4.5.2.11 New
When nonmagnetic retainer rings are used, the ring material shall be either 18
Mn–18 Cr or 18 Mn–13 Cr.
2.4.6.1.5 New
For special–purpose motors rated 7500 kW (10,000 hp) and below, the first critical
speed shall be at least 20 percent above the motor no–load speed.
2.4.6.2.2 Addition
Grinding shall not be permitted.
2.4.7.17 Addition
Access for the measurement of shaft vibration by a portable probe adjacent to the
drive–end bearing shall be provided.
2.4.10.8 Heat Exchanger (Exception)
Aluminum is not acceptable
2.4.11.4 New
All equipment items shall be provided with corrosion resistant tags with the
purchaser item number.
SECTION 3 – ACCESSORIES
3.1 Terminal Boxes
3.1.1 Addition
Terminal boxes shall be extra–large and sized to accomodate cables and
accessories as stated in Appendix “A”.
3.1.4 Addition
Terminal boxes shall be NEMA type 4X. A motor lead seal and separator shall be
provided betwen the motor frame and the terminal box.
Stator windings shall be equipped with 12 (three per phase) 100–ohm platinum
RTDs, wired to a terminal strip in a NEMA 4X terminal box. Six of the RTDs shall
be used for local temperature indication and six RTDs shall be used for protective
relaying.
