Fantasies- It’s not Greys Anatomy, You don’t save someone’s life every day, Its not always happy. Sometimes people are in really bad shape and it takes a toll on your life at home sometimes Realities- The doctors aren’t always nice and it gets very stressful sometimes. There’s a lot of dirty work.

2. What is your current educational level? What continuing education and training are required? (educational level and requirements)

She has a bachelors in nursing science. Every 2 years she’s required to renew her license. She is also given a class to take every 2 years to take a test at the end to ensure she still has the ability to perform correctly in the hospital setting.

Revised Fall 2017

3.

Please describe the typical day to day activities of someone working in your field.

(day-to-day activities)

She is required to be at work between 4:00am and 6:00am. They can’t wear scrubs to work anymore so she has to change when she gets there. Spends several hours taking people and checking them in. Starts prepping for surgery then receives them back after surgery for recovery and then discharge.

4. How secure are you in your current position? What do you think is the future of your field? (job security)

“I feel very secure in nursing in general. The field definitely demands a little more pay than actual work so I am fearful of them going into debt but as for me I am secure in a job in nursing.” She feels that they need more workers for her field of work because there is always too many patients and sometimes the patients feel that they aren’t being taken time on because of the constant rush.

5. What is a typical (average or lowest to highest) salary of someone working in your field?

(salary)

They make an hourly rate of 32-38$. Full time at the hospital was $65-70 a year with benefits.

6. What potential for growth is there in your field?

(growth potential)

Learning how to circulate the GI. She hopes to be able to learn from some of the older women that have worked there for a while certain things that they are really good at that she would like to improve on, basic things like building a good relationship with your patient so that they feel very comfortable and trust you.

Revised Fall 2017

***Questions 7-10 will be created by the ISM student.

7. Why did you decide to become a nurse? She grew up wanting to be a doctor and never a nurse because she didn’t want to work under a doctor’s wing but when she was in college after going through 4 years of college she found out she was pregnant. She then had her baby and decided she would rather go through nursing school than medical school so she could get done a little faster.

8. What do you think is the most important traits of becoming a nurse? Nursing takes a compassionate and caring person who is willing to work hard for someone else’s good. Nursing is not a walk in the park so when I see certain people who always look like they hate their job and are mean to patients I wonder why they even considered nursing. You have to be willing to work hard and also have sympathy and kindness toward patients.”

9. What is the hardest part of your job? “The stress and friction of everyone rushing all the time. Always trying to make the doctors, patients and your co-workers happy can become very stressful. Having to meet everyone’s needs and keep a calm work environment is sometimes hard in frantic situations.”

10. What’s your favorite part of your job? “I really enjoy taking care of patients and getting to know them. It brings me joy to be able to discharge patients and know that they are feeling better. It makes me happy to be able to help the elderly to because it brings back memories of my grandparents and only makes me want to help them and love on them more.”
