Please note: These symptoms are not a deficiency of the LCD monitor!

6
YAMASAKI OPTICAL TECHNOLOGY PTY LTD.

2. Basic operation

The Yamasaki Y90 fusion splicer is designed

for fusing many types of fiber by using core

alignment rationale. It is a compact,

light weight splicer, which makes it suitable for

field work. It is simple to operate, fusion speed

is high, and fusion loss is low.

2.
.1 Descriptions of the power modules

The Yamasaki Y90 fusion splicer uses a 2 in 1 power module design. The

Y90 fusion splicer can use the polymer lithium ion battery separately or use

the AC adapter for electricity supply. When the AC adapter is used for power

supply the polymer lithium ion battery is charged automatically. The Lithium

battery needs to be the same make and model if it needs to be replaced.

Disclaimer:

Yamasaki Optical Technology does not assume any liability for

damage caused by the use of a non- original battery.

A valid ground three-hole socket must be used when AC/DC adaptor

has access to AC 220V 50H power.

7
YAMASAKI OPTICAL TECHNOLOGY PTY LTD.

2.
.2 AC operation

2.2.1 The power supply of the Yamasaki Y90 consists of a power supply,

charger and lithium battery. When using AC power supply, the AC/DC

adapter supplied by Yamasaki Optical Technology should be used. The

basic parameters of the adapter are as follows:

INPUT: AC100-240V~1.8A 50/60HZ
OUTPUT: DC13.5V ⁄ 4.8A

2.2.2 The AC/DC adapter will not be able to supply normal DC output if the

input AC voltage is lower than 100V or higher than 240V.

In this case, the DC output line of the adapter must not be inserted into

“POWER INPUT “specified on the power module of the Y90 fusion

splicer, otherwise it will result in damage to the Y90 fusion splicer.

Use of lithium battery is recommended in this instance.

2.2.3 As and when the lithium battery is in the battery case, the battery pack

will be charged whilst connected to power. However, it is

recommended that the Y90 fusion splicer be off when being charged.

8
YAMASAKI OPTICAL TECHNOLOGY PTY LTD.

2.
.3 Battery supply operation

The user may choose to use the polymer lithium battery in the splicer to

supply power to the Y90 fusion splicer.

2.3.1 Checking battery capacity

When the battery is not being charged, press the "PUSH" button on the

side of the battery.

Then the four battery capacity indicator (red) lights on the left hand side

will light up.

The number lights represents the fullness or lowness of the battery.

See the table below.

When the power module is fully charged, the four battery capacity

indicator (red) lights on the left hand side will be on, which only

represents the fullness of the current charge voltage, but the real capacity

of the battery will only be 80%.

Battery capciy ≥80% Battery capciy ≥60% Battery capciy≥40% Battery capciy≥15% Battery capciy≤10%
Battery Voltage 12.2V Battery Voltage 11.8V Battery Voltage 11.4V Battery Voltage 11V Battery Voltage <11V
● The lights are bright О The lights are bright
The capacity level of battery is as follows: (when you press the Push

button on the power module): Notes: the capacity of the built-in

polymer lithium battery of the power module: 11.1V.

9
YAMASAKI OPTICAL TECHNOLOGY PTY LTD.

2.3.2 Battery charging

When the battery is low, the AC power adapter needs to be inserted

into “POWER INPUT “on the Y90 fusion splicer power module, to

enable the power module to start charging again.

During the charging process, the charging indicator light is red; after

the charging is completed, the charging indicator will be green.

The maximum charging time is 3 hours 40 minutes, and the shortest is

40 minutes, whilst the splicer is off. The length of the charging time

depends on the current battery capacity of the splicer.

If the splicer is charged when it is on, the charging time is longer. The

user is recommended to charge the battery when the splicer is off,

shortening the charging time.

2.3.3 Under Voltage alarm (battery powered)

The Y90 fusion splicer has a “low voltage alarm” function. When the

lithium battery power is below a certain value (this value is set at the

factory and is about 10.3V), the Y90 fusion splicer screen will display

the “low battery” warning. At this point the operator should use the

power adaptor provided and charge the lithium battery at the same time.

Otherwise the splicer will shut down automatically after about 30

seconds.

10
YAMASAKI OPTICAL TECHNOLOGY PTY LTD.

2.3.4 The other considerations

The Y90 fusion splicer battery is a consumable item and has a safe

service life. It should not be charged for more than 5 hours and should

not be left unattended when being charged.

The lithium battery must be used in a normal environment and charged

in temperatures ranging between 0℃~40℃.

The battery should be kept away from heat, moisture, high pressure

and high electrostatic environments to avoid damage.

The voltage and appearance of the battery should be checked once

every 2 to 3 months and needs a thorough charge and arc once in

every six months.

In cases where the charging and discharging time is significantly

shorter (perhaps only half the time of normal use or shorter) or when

there is obvious bulging, do not use the battery and return to the

distributor immediately for further inspection and maintenance.

The battery should be stored in a clean, dry and ventilated indoor

environment of temperatures ranging –5℃~+35℃ and humidity of

65±20%RH.

It is prohibited to put the battery into a fire, to prevent battery from

exploding. It is also prohibited to dismantle the battery.

Notes:

The temperature range for the heater of the Y90 fusion splicer is

100~200℃. To avoid damages to the heating device due to improper

operation, it is suggested to heat below 200℃. The heater may burn out if

continuously working in 200℃ for more than 100 seconds.

3.2.4 [Arc Calibration]

The temperature , humidity and barometric pressure are always changing.

The Y90 fusion splicer is equipped with a temperature and barometric

sensor. The amount of change in temperature can be transmitted in real

time to the control system ensuring the arc intensity remains balanced.

Electrodes wear and glass adhesion may result in changes in arc power.

Also, the center position of arc discharge sometimes shifts to the left or

right. In this case, it is necessary to perform an arc calibration to eliminate

these problems. [Arc Calibration] of this machine has the function to test

the current arc intensity and revises it into the standard intensity.

Arc calibration is divided into two steps:

Step 1 “Arc1 correction”, Step 2 “Arc2 correction ”

In the “Splice Menu”, press to move the cursor to [Arc Calibration];

after the fiber is prepared and arranged, press to enter the interface

of “Step I of discharge calibration”; and press to show the menu or

press to start automatically . Discharge calibration starts from “Step

I of discharge calibration”. See the following picture.

Step I of discharge calibration

29
YAMASAKI OPTICAL TECHNOLOGY PTY LTD.

If “Step I Arc calibration” displays as “not completed”, then “Step II Arc

calibration” will not start. However, auto current setting has started and

been memorized by the machine; the operator is required to follow the

prompts and continue to prepare until completed. “Step II of discharge

calibration” will automatically start as soon as “Step I of discharge

calibration” is completed. See the following picture.

Step II of discharge calibration

The operator should repeatedly prepare the fiber so that the Y90 fusion

splicer can achieve auto discharge calibration, until the Y90 fusion splicer

indicates that “Step II of discharge calibration completed”, which means the

process of discharge calibration (Step 1 and Step 2) is finished. After three

consecutive completions of the “Step II of discharge calibration”, the Y90

fusion splicer automatically exits from the discharge calibration interface

and enters “Splice Menu” operation interface. The screen of “discharge

calibration completed”

Note: To ensure high quality of splice, further calibration is strongly

recommended, calibration should be completed 3 times, that is

“Step II of discharge calibration completed” message displayed

three times; at this time, the discharge calibration interface will

automatically exit. This will provide the best Arc intensity and

splicing position.

3.2.5 [Splice Options] operation

The [Splice Options] window allows for a number of important

options for Fusion Splicing.

In the “Splice Mode” menu, press to select [Splice Options]

window, then press to enter, and then the “Operation Options”

menu is displayed. See the following pictures.

protector is closed and you will need to push the
button to start.
If "Pause1” is set to “ON”, splicing operation pauses when fibers
Pause1 are forwarded to gap-set position. Cleave angles are displayed
during the pause.

If “Pause 2” is set to "ON", splicing operation pauses after fiber

Pause2 alignment is completed. The operator can see the offset of the
fiber core and the offset of the clad at the same time

Operation Options Others:

If “Automatic start” is set to "ON", the “Auto Fiber Forward”

setting is inactive, and splicing starts automatically as soon as
the wind protector is closed. If “Auto Start” is set to "OFF", then
there are two functions: if the setting of “Auto Fiber Forward” is
active, press , the fiber forwards and splicing starts
Auto Fiber Forward automatically as soon as the wind protector is closed; if the
setting of “Auto Fiber Forward” is inactive, the fiber forwards
