Assignment Brief
LO1 Explore potential renewable energy resources, including current storage and generation technologies
LO2 Determine the optimum combination and efficiencies of renewable energy technologies for a
particular location
LO3 Conduct a cost-benefit analysis between renewable and conventional energy sources to determine
the most viable option
LO4 Explain socio-economic, legislative and environmental factors involved in the consideration and
selection of other approaches to renewable energy resources and technologies
Scenario:
Modern society is energy hungry. Our use of technology demands a huge supply of energy and
we have devised many ways to supply this energy. There is a limited supply of fossil fuels and
we will eventually run out of them. A lot of research is being undertaken to develop
sustainable sources of energy, the renewables such as Hydroelectric, solar, wind and tidal
power. One of the major energy providers is planning to diversify the production of renewable
energy resources. You are employed as an engineering trainee to explore the pros and cons of
introducing potential renewable energy resources. Your employer has set the following tasks
for you to complete in order to assess your suitability for the job.
HNC/HND Engineering 2
LO1 Explore potential renewable energy resources, including current storage and
generation technologies
Task 1
(a) Create a schematic diagram that illustrates how the following energy sources are obtained
and transformed. These diagrams should be labelled.
i. Solar energy
(b) Explore the rates of adoption of two of the above energy resources. Justify
recommendations for the adoption of the chosen renewable energy resources.
Task 2
(a) Choose two renewable energy systems from Task 1 and describe how these systems
could be connected with local systems.
(b) Choose a remote area and discuss how renewable energy systems will bring benefit to
the people living in the area.
(c) Choose a location in United Kingdom and list the efficiencies of a variety of
combinations of renewable energy technologies for the chosen location.
LO3 Conduct a cost-benefit analysis between renewable and conventional energy sources
to determine the most viable option
Task 3
(a) Design a solar power system for a three bedroom property in London. The design should
include the cost of installation and construction of the system.
(b) Contrast the installation and construction costs of all available renewable energy
sources
(c) Conduct a cost–benefit critical analysis to determine the most viable option between all
available renewable and conventional energy sources.
HNC/HND Engineering 3
LO4 Explain socio-economic, legislative and environmental factors involved in the
consideration and selection of other approaches to renewable energy resources and
technologies
(a) Examine how socio - economic, legislative and environmental factors affect the
selection, set-up and operation of renewable energy sources.
(b) Evaluate environmental analysis and planning tools such as PESTLE to identify possible
sources of conflicts of interest.
(c) Provide supported and justified recommendations and original ideas for an effective
environmental analysis of alternative approaches to the selection of renewable energy
resources.
P1 Create schematic diagrams M1 Explore the rates of adoption D1 Provide supported and well
showing the working principle of the of the most widely used renewable justified recommendations for the
most widely used renewable energy energy resources adoption of the most widely used
systems conventional and nonconventional
renewable energy resources
LO2 Determine the optimum combination and efficiencies of renewable energy technologies for a particular
location
P2 Describe how each renewable M2 Discuss how renewable energy D2 Summarise the efficiencies of a
energy system could be connected systems will bring benefit to the variety of combinations of renewable
with local energy systems people living in the chosen area energy technologies for a chosen
location
HNC/HND Engineering 4
LO3 Conduct a cost–benefit analysis to determine the most viable option between renewable and conventional
energy sources
P3 Calculate the installation and M3 Contrast the installation and D3 Conduct a cost– benefit critical
construction costs of one renewable construction costs of all available analysis to determine the most
energy system from a renewable renewable energy sources viable option between all available
energy standpoint renewable and conventional energy
sources
LO4 Explain socio-economic, legislative and environmental factors involved in the consideration and selection of
other approaches to renewable energy resources and technologies
