LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE

Explain sequences of images in print texts and compare these to


the ways hyperlinked digital texts are organised, explaining their
effect on viewers’ interpretations (ACELA1511 - Scootle )
Objectives Students will be able to:
Communicate their ideas through different modes such as
speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing and representing
Explain the purpose of ‘theme’ in fairy tales and how that
influences the story.
Overall duration (time) 1 hour

Student prior Knowledge of fairy tales, theme and plot, reading and
knowledge classifying.
Materials & Resources Images of scenes/settings.

Introduction (15 min) Discuss setting and theme. What is it? How does it affect the
story? Show image as example and work with class to describe
it Is it happy, sad, how do they feel? Discuss key words,
descriptive words, emotions, feelings etc.

Each table to receive an image of a different setting and discuss


the ‘theme’ of this image. Each student to write at least three
words on a post it note to stick around the image. Students
should engage in conversations about how they respond to the
setting and what kind of story would take place there.
Body (30 min) Students then take words or ideas from the words written on the
image and use them to create an inviting opening paragraph
setting the scene for a fairy tale. The paragraph must describe
the setting and entice the reader to want to hear more. It does
not need to include characters.

The paragraph may start with ‘once upon a time’ or ‘long, long
ago’

Each paragraph must contain at least two examples of figurative


language.

Extension – repeat process with a contrasting image.


Conclusion (15 min) Students to share their opening paragraphs.

Modifications Students can use the words based on the image that was discussed
with the whole class.
Assessment of student Group participation, contribution. Words/descriptive language used.

Evaluation Students displayed their opening paragraphs on wall with images and
words. Paragraphs were very descriptive, enticing, and suited the
themes selected.

Some students not happy with a ‘spookier’ image over a castle image.
I explained the need for contrasting images to create a variety of
settings. Most students responded well to this lesson.
