2017 – 2018 SPRING BONUS HOMEWORK

Prepared by: Cem Baykal Mail: baycem@metu.edu.tr
Room: B-175 Due date:22.05.2018 @16:00

You are expected to provide

 clear explanation of each step of your solution,
 units,
 well annotated, scaled plots (title, axis labels, grid, legend), not random hand sketches,
 source code attached to your solution if you use a software package in your calculations.
Your grades are subjected to these items as well as your calculations.

1. Consider a two degree of freedom system with the following mass and stiffness matrices:
1 0 6500 −3100 𝑁
𝑀= 𝑘𝑔 𝐾 = 𝛾 = 0.1
0 1 −3100 3100 𝑚
a) Plot |𝛼 (𝜔)| for 𝜔 = 1 − 200 𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠 by obtaining exact 𝛼 with matrix inversion.
b) Obtain |𝛼 | by using the first mode only and plot it on top of the plot obtained in part a.
c) Obtain residual stiffness 𝐾 by using:
𝑚
𝛼 (140) = (−7.9884 − 𝑖4.9613) ∗ 10
𝑁
And plot |𝛼 | by using the first mode and 𝐾 again on top of the plot obtained in part a.

2. Consider a five degrees of freedom system with the following mass and stiffness matrices:

20 0 0 0 0 65 −25 0 0 0
⎡ 0 10 0 0 0 ⎤ ⎡−25 52 −27 0 0 ⎤ 𝑘𝑁
⎢ ⎥ ⎢ ⎥
𝑀=⎢0 0 25 0 0 ⎥ 𝑘𝑔 𝐾 = ⎢ 0 −27 59 −32 0 ⎥
𝑚
⎢0 0 0 30 0⎥ ⎢ 0 0 −32 52 −20⎥
⎣0 0 0 0 20⎦ ⎣ 0 0 0 −20 30 ⎦
By selecting first and third nodes as principle ones, and considering just the first two modes,
calculate the equivalent 2 DOF system matrices using SEREP. Compare the modal properties
with the original system.
3. For the following mechanical system, system parameters are given as follows:

𝑁 𝑁 𝑁
𝑚 = 1.5𝑘𝑔 𝑚 = 1𝑘𝑔 𝑚 = 2𝑘𝑔 𝑘 = 1000 𝑘 = 400 𝑘 = 1400
𝑚 𝑚 𝑚

𝐴 𝐵

𝑘 𝑘 𝑘
𝑘
𝑚 𝑚 𝑚 𝑚

𝑥 (𝑡) 𝑥 (𝑡) 𝑥 (𝑡) 𝑥 (𝑡)

a) Find [𝛼 ] and [𝛼 ].
b) Couple A and B rigidly by connecting, second and third mass, and plot |𝛼 (𝑤)|
i. Using impedance coupling
ii. Using FRF coupling

Note: Use the following 𝜔 values in your plot to prevent going to infinity in the absence of
damping:

𝑟𝑎𝑑
𝜔 = 0,0.1 … 50
𝑠
c) An experiment made with Laser Doppler Vibrometer to calculate [𝛼 ] and [𝛼 ]. However,
there is an amplification factor, which is very effective for low frequencies, in the vibrometer:
.
𝐴𝑚𝑝(𝜔) = 1 + 12𝑒

In more detailed way, results of the experiment can be written as such:

[𝛼 ] = 𝐴𝑚𝑝(𝜔)[𝛼 ] [𝛼 ] = 𝐴𝑚𝑝(𝜔)[𝛼 ]

Repeat the cases in part b with the experimental data. Plot the |𝛼 (𝜔)|.

Note: Use the following 𝜔 values in your plot to prevent going to infinity in the absence of
damping:

𝑟𝑎𝑑
𝜔 = 0,0.1 … 50
𝑠
