What is XBRL format?

XBRL refers to Extensible Business

Reporting Language: a language for
gathering, aggregating and analyzing business and
financial data.

XBRL has emerged as the most widely accepted form of

disseminating financial information, thanks to sponsorship by a
consortium of corporate regulators, tax regulators, securities regulators, stock
exchanges and accounting profession regulators.

Regulators worldwide prefer collecting financial data in XBRL format for three
reasons:

• Consistency in understanding (with minimal room for miscommunication

or misinterpretation) since every data item is associated with one unique
element in accounting taxonomy

• Portability into databases or spreadsheet models without massive data entry

and;

• Analyzability through an XBRL viewer; as easy as using a Pivot table in an

Excel Spreadsheet.

What is involved in preparation of financial statements in XBRL format?

An XBRL document is an XML statement with XML tags for each piece of financial data
associating the data with an entity, a time period, a currency, a unit of measurement
and one unique accounting label chosen from a taxonomy of accounting labels
universally agreed to be part of a GAAP. Of course the XML statement would have to
conform to the regulator’s gateway requirement (validation rules) for integrity and
consistency to ensure eventless update of Regulator’s database.

There are two types of XBRL formats: XBRL (that is readable

by machines alone) and iXBRL (readable by machines and
human-beings through browsers). Regulators decide which
format is to be used for filings in their domain.
