~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ifa gives us a message of long life, not only in avoiding physical death, but al
so in avoiding the death of our efforts or failure of our plans. We set our mind
and efforts on the goals, and we will reach our point of comfort and honor.
In this, Ifa tells us:
The place where we knew the other
Is the place where we should reference our greetings.
Mo gba
Is how we call for the people of Iregba
Those that ate ekuru and ewa would know what beans are called
Divined Ifa for Adegoroye
The child of Erugun Oye
On the day he was asked to take care of the earth
And make ebo
Would life be any better?
Would I have happiness?
Adegoroye asked
They said his life would be fine and he would have great happiness
Ekuru in large servings is his ebo, they told him
He was told to sprinkle iyerosun on it
He was told to offer it to his Ifa
They said life would please him
They said he would have peace of mind
They said his plans would not fail
Adegoroye, child of Erugun Oye made the ebo
Life became pleasing for Adegoroye
He ascended to the vacant throne of his father
He had plenty of money
He had great prosperity
In surprise and excitement, he shouted Ha!
Except for Ajekurujewa
How would we know the correct ebo of Osayeku
That would bring one in to such great profit?
He proclaimed,
The place where we knew the other
Is the place where we should reference our greetings
Mo gba
Is how we call the people of Iregba
Those that ate ekuru and ewa would know what beans are called
Divined Ifa for Adegoroye the child of Erugun Oye
The one who was told to take care of the earth and to make ebo
They said everything in his life would be fine
Adegoroye the child of Erugun Oye heard of the ebo
He performed it
Without Adegoroye the child of Erugun Oye
We would not know the proper ebo of Osayeku
Which would make him truly prosperous
We ate ekuru
We ate ewa
He brought great fortune for us
We ate ekuru
We ate ewa
Ase, ase, ase o.
In the above ese Ifa, we see the phrase, The place where we knew the other, is th
e place where we should reference our greetings . Here, Ifa is telling us that we
must know what it is that we want and need, and we must ask for it. While we may
be struggling in poverty, between a rock and a hard place, we must recall where
it is that we want to be. Then, we must ask to be there. We want good food to e
at. So, we must give Ifa good food, and tell Ifa that is what we want. We must a
lso give to the earth, as it is Mother Earth that sustains our life. We must tel
l Mother Earth of the good things we want.
In another verse, Ifa says:
Osayeku cast Ifa for Onatooro
And he cast Ifa for Onagbooro
They were told that their road of life would be very long
They were advised to make ebo Both of them heard the ebo
And they made ebo accordingly
Osayeku cast Ifa for Onatooro
And he cast Ifa for Onagbooro
Onatooro and Onagbooro made ebo for long life
Their road of life would be very long
Ase.
Here, Ifa's message is quite simple. We are advised to make ebo for long life. W
e make ebo, and we will have the blessing of longevity. We heed Ifa's instructio
ns, and our blessings are granted. On the other hand, when we do not take heed,
the results can be fatal. Ifa explains this, quite plainly, in the following ver
se.
Osayeku, Isakusa Iyakuya niimuniiyekun
Cast Ifa for Tree Branch
When a terrible wind storm was coming
He was advised to make ebo, so he would be safe from the wind
Tree Branch heard the ebo, but refused to comply When the winds came,
Tree Branch could not survive
Osayeku, Isakusa Iyakuya niimuniiyekun
Cast Ifa for Tree Branch When the wind coming to break him
He was advised to make ebo, so he would be safe from the wind
Tree Branch refused to make ebo
He was not saved from the wind
Ase.
Although Ifa tells us, through this Odu of Oyekusa, that we will avoid death, it
is through ebo that our safety is insured. We can not expect the positive outco
me, as predicted by Ifa, without making ebo accordingly. It is also important to
note the mention of wind. This indicates turbulent times. Ifa assures us that t
urbulent times will not break us. Yet, we must make ebo, to insure our survival
through the difficulties ahead. We must also realize that turbulent winds bring
change. Upheaval and uprooting is par for the course. Ebo secures our blessings
through all of these changes.
Perewu Perewu oju okoto
Divined Ifa for Okanringbongboongbon
When he was crying for all blessings in life
He was advised to make ebo
Who is Okanringbongboongbon?
That is what we call Orisa Oko
His whole body, head to toe Is a declaration of prosperity
They prayed he would have good fortune
Okanringbongboongbon made the ebo
He became very successful in life
He tied money all over his body
He began dancing and singing
He praised his Babalawo
His Babalawo praised Ifa
He said it was just as his Babalawo predicted
Perewu Perewu oju okoto
Divined Ifa for Okanringbongboongbon
When he was crying for all blessings in life
He was advised that he would be abundantly fortunate on earth
And he was told to make ebo Okanringbongboongbon
You heard your ebo and performed it
Who receives the ebo when this Odu Ifa is cast?
Orisa Oko
The great star,
Is the deity to receive ebo of this Odu Ifa
Ase, ase, ase o.
Undoubtedly, we see that Orisa Oko, the farmer, is to be appeased. He is an Oris
a of labor. He cultivates and maintains the land, sows seeds, and reaps the harv
est. Ultimately, he enjoys the fruits of his labor. Following his example, we mu
st be relentless in our own labor. We must see it through to the harvest, and mu
st work to reap the benefits. Once he began to gain wealth, Orisa Oko tied money
all over his body. This indicates that we must dress according to our success.
We must be symbols of the wealth that Ifa brings. This is not to say that we mus
t boast and flaunt our wealth. Yet, we must not dress like vagrants, when Ifa ha
s blessed us with prosperity. We must not look like beggars, when we have wealth
. When our ship comes in, we must board it.
Brief Summary:
In Osayeku, as revealed for Osebiile Temple, Ifa tells us that we will be blesse
d with long life on earth. We escape danger, and come to a place of fruitfulness
. As we enter this time of turbulence and change, things in our lives may be upr
ooted. It may seem that we have no sure footing. Other people will try to take u
s down. However, we will be protected from the storm, and come to a better posit
ion of respect, honor, peace, and prosperity. Our plans will not fail.* We are a
dvised to continue working, diligently and relentlessly. Our efforts will not be
in vain. We will reap the harvest of our labor. In order to receive the things
we want in life, we must be able to identify these things, request them in our p
rayers, and claim them. As we receive our blessings, we must dress and conduct o
urselves accordingly. We must not appear to be forsaken vagrants, but symbols of
Ifa's great work. Adherence to Ifa's advice is key to our success. Ignorance to
ward Ifa would be our doom.
* Our plans will not fail , is not an indication that we can just do anything we f
eel like doing. Rather, the well thought-out plans, in accordance with our prope
r destiny, will be successful.
Ebo:
In Osayeku, we are advised to appease Ifa, Orisa Oko, Ogun, and Esu. We appeal t
o Ifa, for all blessings of life, especially long life and prosperity. Offering
is made to Orisa Oko, specifically for wealth. Ogun receives offerings in the Od
u Ifa, so we will be protected, we will not succumb to sabotage, and we will see
our blessings flowing in to us. The details of offerings are listed below.
Ifa
large serving of ekuru, shea butter, 128 bitter kola, red palm oil, gin
Orisa Oko
egusi soup, 128 cowries, gin
Ogun
turtle shell, 30 alligator pepper, red palm oil, gin
Esu
portions of offerings to Ifa, Orisa Oko, and Ogun
Money is also a required offering for prosperity.
