Rolling resistance

MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG ProfiDrive® Economy 30.09.2011 8

Rolling resistance

MAN Support
ProfiDrive®

Rolling resistance depends on:

ƒ current road speed;
ƒ weight of vehicle;
ƒ type of tyres, tread pattern. air pressure;
ƒ steering geometry / track setting;
ƒ condition of road / road surface
ƒ condition of brake system

MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG ProfiDrive® Economy 30.09.2011 9

Rolling resistance

MAN Support
ProfiDrive®

Higher consumption of up to a few liters

on 100 km can be caused by:
ƒ defective wheel bearings;
ƒ incorrect track setting;
ƒ brake shoes which do not release
completely;
ƒ incorrect tyre pressure
Extra fuel consumption due to tyre pressure:
2 bar underpressure in tyres in a 40 t road train leads to about 1.5 litres more fuel per 100 km

MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG ProfiDrive® Economy 30.09.2011 10

Rolling resistance

MAN Support
ProfiDrive®

You can keep rolling resistance down by:

ƒ ensuring that you have the right tyres for the job;
ƒ watching the rolling behaviour and checking the tyre
wear pattern (correct track setting);
ƒ checking the rims for excessive heat development
(indicates that brake shoes are sticking);
ƒ checking the tyre pressure at regular intervals
(with tyres cold)

Remember:
If the tyre pressure is too low there is a risk that the tyres catch fire!
Just 0.3 bar too little tyre pressure can lead to the tyres heating
up to over 100° C.

MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG ProfiDrive® Economy 30.09.2011 17

Drag

MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG ProfiDrive® Economy 30.09.2011 18

Drag

MAN Support
ProfiDrive®

Drag depends on:

ƒ Road speed;
ƒ Size of vehicle (frontal area, body, loads
transported);
ƒ Vehicle shape (cw value);
ƒ Wind direction and wind strength.

MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG ProfiDrive® Economy 30.09.2011 19

Drag

MAN Support
ProfiDrive®

The following have an unfavourable influence on drag:

ƒ high road speeds; as speed increases drag is squared;
ƒ projecting parts of vehicle or load;
ƒ loose or poorly lashed tarpaulins.

MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG ProfiDrive® Economy 30.09.2011 20

Drag

MAN Support
ProfiDrive®

You can keep drag down by:

ƒ adjusting tarpaulin frames (if possible) to the lowest setting;

ƒ pulling tarpaulins tight and lashing them securely;
ƒ fitting a roof spoiler and adjusting it correctly
(this improves airflow, reduces fuel consumption and decreases the noise level).

Acceleration resistance

MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG ProfiDrive® Economy 30.09.2011 27

Acceleration resistance

MAN Support
ProfiDrive®

Acceleration resistance depends on:

ƒ how fast you accelerate your truck;
ƒ the actual gross weight of the truck.

MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG ProfiDrive® Economy 30.09.2011 28

Acceleration resistance

MAN Support
ProfiDrive®

Extra consumption is caused by:

ƒ unnecessary acceleration. e.g.
before red traffic lights;
ƒ driving too close to the man in front,
resulting in frequent braking and
accelerating;
ƒ unnecessary gearshifts, especially on
uphills; any interruption of tractive
power leads to a reduction in speed.

Driving with foresight:

ƒ Avoid unnecessary acceleration;
ƒ Exploit momentum (keeping speed within statutory limits );
ƒ Use knowledge of the route to drive with
foresight;
ƒ Observe traffic far ahead;
ƒ Keep far enough away from vehicles in
front;
ƒ Drive smoothly and with concentration;
ƒ Brake rationally;
ƒ Adjust driving style to changing situations at an early
stage;
ƒ Use cruise control or speed limiter rationally;
switch them off if necessary.

MAN Support

Climbing resistance depends on:

ƒ Gradient;

ƒ Gross vehicle weight

MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG ProfiDrive® Economy 30.09.2011 57

Climbing resistance

MAN Support
ProfiDrive®

Extra consumption results if:

ƒ momentum from downhill or driving on the flat
ƒ is not exploited;
ƒ the driver does not shift down in good time;
ƒ gears are changed frequently (vehicle loses
speed with every gearshift);
ƒ acceleration does not stop before vehicle
reaches top of a hill.

MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG ProfiDrive® Economy 30.09.2011 58

Climbing resistance

MAN Support

You can keep the effects of climbing resistance

within limits if you:
ƒ engage a gear suitable for the gradient in good
time;
ƒ shift as little as possible when driving uphill;
ƒ select the correct engine speed range;
ƒ accelerate in good time before reaching the
bottom of a downhill;
ƒ exploit downhill momentum (keep speed within
statutory limits );
ƒ use cruise control or speed limiter rationally;
switch them off if necessary.

Lack of air in fuel combustion

MAN Support
ProfiDrive®
Too little air in the fuel-air mixture leads to incomplete combustion. In this context one talks about a rich
mixture.

Features of a mixture that is too rich:

ƒ Black smoke during fuel combustion
ƒ Low engine output

Possible reason for lack of air in fuel combustion:

ƒ Clogged air filter;
ƒ Boost pressure too low because charge-air pipe is leaking;
ƒ Fuel injection quantity too high;
ƒ Valve clearance incorrectly set;
ƒ Exhaust butterfly valve not fully open;

Incidentally :
1 liter diesel fuel requires, depending on supercharging, between 10,000 and 20,000 liters of air for
combustion

MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG ProfiDrive® Economy 30.09.2011 68

Air surplus in fuel combustion

MAN Support
ProfiDrive®

Too much air in the fuel-air mixture leads to non-utilisation of the available air capacity. In this context one
talks about a lean mixture.

Features of a mixture that is too lean :

ƒ Engine power drop

Possible reason for air surplus in fuel combustion:

ƒ Clogged fuel filter;
ƒ Injection quantity too low;
ƒ Defective supply pump
ƒ Leaking fuel lines.
