An Oxidized PAN fiber

PYRON® is a registered trade name for oxidized
polyacrylonitrile fibers (OPF) produced by Zoltek.
Zoltek has produced PYRON® OPF for over 20
years and is the largest producer in the world.

PYRON ® Manufacturing Process

PYRON® starts as polyacrylonitrile (PAN) that is processed through
a proprietary high temperature oven to stabilize its molecular
structure. When completed, a finish and crimp is applied and the
fiber is pleated into a box as tow or further processed into staple
fiber. Zoltek’s Quality System is ISO9001:2008 and AS9100
certified to providing consistent quality.
PYRON ® does not melt or drip…it chars!

PYRON® fibers are electrically nonconductive and function as

an effective electrical insulator even after exposure to heat and
open flames.

Aircraft Brakes
Zoltek’s PYRON® fibers are used as the primary reinforcement
material for the majority of aircraft brake friction materials. They are
processed via a conventional textile process and converted into
carbon-carbon composites by the various brake manufacturers.
PYRON® fibers are used for their ability to tolerate high temperatures,
which can exceed 2000° F during landings. Zoltek’s AS9100:2008
Certified Quality System provides the consistent quality required in
this safety critical application. Chances are that you have already
experienced the performance of our fibers first hand during your last
airplane landing.

Protective Apparel
PYRON® is an inherently fire resistant fiber specially suited to
improve the performance of flame and heat resistant protective
apparel. PYRON® has excellent heat insulation properties derived
from it’s heat stabilized polyacrylonitrile chemistry and resultant low
thermal conductivity. PYRON® liners used in protective apparel have
exceptional heat blocking characteristics which can help reduce an
individual’s overall heat stress and provide enhanced protection in
flashover situations. PYRON® fibers are also durable for reliable
service performance as a stand alone fiber or in blends.

Protective Insulation
PYRON® fiber is uniquely designed to deliver improved heat-blocking,
fire-barrier, and acoustical insulation performance in aircraft seat and
automotive engine compartment applications. As engine
compartments become smaller and more crowded, nonwovens
incorporating PYRON® fibers have demonstrated the ability to meet
the ever increasing need for improved thermal insulation without
adding undo weight. PYRON® nonwoven fabrics or fabric blends are
being used to protect the polyurethane foam used in aircraft seats.
Delaying the ignition and burning of the foam can slow the spread of
post-crash fires and the release of toxic gases.

Home Furnishings
Fire blocking fabrics comprised of PYRON® fibers are used in
furniture to protect in the home. A PYRON® nonwoven fabric or fabric
blend can prevent or help delay the ignition and burning of
polyurethane foam used in furniture thus allowing additional time for
potential victims to escape. Zoltek’s PYRON® fibers, due to their
unique heat stabilized polyacrylonitrile chemistry and process are a
superior fire barrier and effective heat insulation.
