a. Report from Southgate Staff Member –Toby Freeman − VPED, CoMPH – Johnathan Craig commencing end of April. Fran had
an initial meeting with Johnathan during his recent visit to Flinders.
− Fran is Theme Head of Social, Political and Commercial Determinants
of Health. Toby is Research Section Head for Public & Population
Health. Themes are considered to be outward looking (external
financing) and sections are more operational/administrative (internal
financing).
− Dennis advised that POCHE sits in Public & Population Health.

b. Report on Southgate Institute activities – Toby Recent successful Applications:


− Academy of Medical Sciences Global Challenges Research Fund
Freeman Attachment B Networking Grant Scheme,( PAW) ”Punching above their weight:
Building capacity for research on some countries have better life
expectancies than predicted by national income” commenced early
2017. International network set up and a Rockefeller meeting was
held in Bellagio. Looking at ‘Preston Curve’ – life expectancy
increases with GDP. Another meeting will be convened this year in
South Africa with representation from a broad spectrum of countries.
Journal article rejected by Lancet is being reworked. PAW will explore
the General Progress Indicator as opposed to GDP.
− NHMRC project grant - “Assessing the health impacts of transnational
corporations” Duration: 5 years.
− ARC Discovery “Transport infrastructure, health and wellbeing: an
institutional analysis“
Grants submitted from November 2017
− ARC Laureate Fellowship, “A Centre on Globalisation, Corporations
and Health” Fran. Requested Funding: $3,283,159 (ARC), $1,648,504
(Flinders University) for 5 years
− ARC Linkage, “The impact of humanitarian visa type on the
resettlement and health and wellbeing outcomes for people from
refugee and asylum seekers backgrounds” A Ziersch, C Due (Uni
Adelaide). Funding requested: $265,224 (ARC) $3,000 (Lutheran
Community Care) $50,000 (Flinders University) for 3 years: 2018-2020
Upcoming Events
− A Think Tank is being held as part of the Lowitja funded project titled
“Health system competence for culturally safe care” on Tuesday 20th
March at the George Institute in Sydney. The aim is to collaboratively
develop a national research project on culturally competent health
systems for culturally safe care.
− Policy Club scheduled for May on “Transnational Corporation”
speakers to include Prof Sharon Friel, Director of RegNet, ANU, Dr
Julia Anaf, Southgate and Prof Roman Tomasic, Professor of Law, Uni
SA.
− Southgate Seminar: Scheduled for Tuesday July 3rd, Dr Aaron Jarden,
Head of Research (Well-Being and Resilience) at SAHMRI will be
giving a seminar to talk about his Wellbeing Indicator work.
− NHMRC Primary Health Care Events scheduled for mid-September in
Canberra with a breakfast being held in Parliament House on
Thursday 13 September followed by a day Symposium on the Friday
14 September.
− Prof David Sanders from the University of the Western Cape and Prof
James Macinko from the University of California will present at this
event. A similar Symposium will be held in Adelaide the following
week.
− Southgate Annual Oration: Tentative date during the week 22 October,
Orator still to be decided, suggestions welcome.
− 2018 CRE Health Equity Policy Symposium. Being held in Canberra
mid-November. The focus will be on “The 10 year anniversary of the
WHO CSDH report and the extent to which policies have responded to
the calls made in the report”. Two overseas experts on health equity
will be invited to participate
Recent Event
− On Monday 11 December, Katina D'Onise, Director, Prevention and
Population Health Branch, South Australian Department for Health and
Ageing presented on "Prevention and Population Health – Directions
and Opportunities." The seminar was a fruitful opportunity to learn
about the plans and priorities of the new branch, and to discuss the
contribution research can make to the functioning of public health in
the state.
Staffing
− Kirsten Foley commenced with as the Research Officer on the Flinders
Innovation Partnership Seed Grant titled “Equity in access to, use of,
and benefits from digital health strategies”. The partners are
HealthDirect (Maureen Robinson) and Australian Digital Health
Agency (Janice Biggs)

Funding
− Claire reported that Centres and Institutes Funding will be released
soon. Regarding payment for CIs– Commitment to be put on salary by
College Head when grant has been confirmed.

Community. Has reached out to Rob Saint and Daryl Rigney, to
attend meeting and will approach Dennis McDermott to seek a
representative.
− SACOSS Australia will be giving funding in the future. HASS can
provide cultural safety input. Would like to commit a research team to
this. Claire will liaise with Sharon Lawn, Angela suggested Eimear
Muir Cochrane. Suggestion for psychology of Tracey Wade, Reg
Nixon. Also suggeseted, Alex Brown, SHAMRI Director of Aboriginal
Health, Tamara McKean (Indigenous suicide).

g. Poche Centre for Indigenous Health and − Student Tutors with stalled qualifications and experience on the
Well-Being – Dennis McDermott ground commencing.

− NHMRC project grant lead by Lisa Grant did not get funded. This will
be resubmitted.
− Monica Lawrence for phone around heart problems remote areas.
− Dennis on scientific symposium later this year in Canberra
− Chelsea Bond running symposium for early career researchers
− Collaborations during recent Hawaii visit.
− Looking to design core topic for students around the college.
− Stefania reported CoNHS Day next week to present to whole of
college.

h. PhD Student – Alice Windle − Kathryn Browne-Yung will continue as the PhD studies convenor in
2018.
− Miram Herzfeld was awarded Flinders University PhD scholarship. Her
thesis is titled “Health in hand: a qualitative study of the health of
workers involved in the ‘cash in hand’ economy”
− Alice was also awarded Flinders University PhD scholarship. Her
thesis is titled “Primary Health Networks: organizational capacity for
evidence-informed, equity-focussed primary health care planning”
− Elsa Barton was awarded her PhD on 29th November. The title of
Elsa’s Thesis was “Individual and community responses to depression
in a comprehensive primary health care model of service delivery:
examination of equity and empowerment aspects.”
Alice
− Approaching 1 year mark,
− 5 PHN case studies being conducted across Australia.
− Progress – confirmation of candidature confirmed and scholarship
awarded.

Kearns - registrations of interest required. − Policy Clubs – principally attached to grants that are nearing
completion.
− Theory Clubs
− First Authored – 4 sessions proposed of 2 hrs monthly. Offered to
staff in the first instance. Claire suggested that this could be rolled out
across colleges.
− Discussion around how to deal with co-authors who don’t contribute.

Sarah – Girls uniform agenda (trousers or skirts) – private schools are
resisting. More problematic in Qld & NSW. (Girls less physically active due

Refugee and asylum seeker housing

• ARC linkage with Anglicare SA, Australian Refugee Association, Baptist Care SA and Shelter SA;
Investigators Anna Ziersch & Kathy Arthurson, Clemence Due project manager
• Surveys of 420 refugees and asylums seekers, 50 interviews, 11 photovoice interviews
• Main project completed with report launched at a Southgate policy event in August 2017
• Recent media coverage in press and radio and Shelter SA undertaking an advocacy campaign on the
basis of the findings
• Presented findings at North American Refugee Health Conference and the Public Health Congress, will
present at the Migration, Ethnicity, Race and Health Congress in Edinburgh in May
• Paper published with several more in preparation

Digital Storytelling with asylum seekers and refugees

• FUSA faculty grant with Clemence Due and Kathy Arthurson and Son Vivienne and Alison Wotherspoon
from Screen studies
• Recruited group of Iranian refugees/asylums seekers to plan and make short films of their housing
experiences
• Two films were screened at the launch of the Refugee Housing report
• Participants currently participating in interviews about their experiences
• Will present at the Migration, Ethnicity, Race and Health Congress in Edinburgh in May and prepare a
paper
• Will run another set of sessions with refugee young people this year with Welcome to Australia

Psychological trauma and primary health care access for refugees

• FUSA faculty grant with Clemence Due, in partnership with Survivors of Torture and Trauma
Rehabilitation Service (STARRS) and Migrant Health Service
• Interviews undertaken with 15 service providers
• Presented findings at a workshop of service providers on 1st March and report currently being finalised
• Presented at the North American Refugee Health Conference in June 2017, will present further findings
at the Migration, Ethnicity, Race and Health Congress in Edinburgh in May
• 2 papers in preparation

Identification and referral of refugee young people in schools to mental health services

• Uni SA grant with Melanie Grant, Shepard Masoicha, Tahereh Ziaian (Uni SA), and Clemence Due –
conducted in partnership with Migrant Health Service and STTARS
• Interviews conducted with school staff and mental health personnel
• Analysis was presented to the project partners
• Paper submitted to Journal of School Health, paper presented at the British Educational Research
Association Conference and a poster at the North American Refugee Health Conference

Refugee oral health

• Adelaide University grant with Clemence Due, Matt Day and Marco Peres
• Survey of over 130 refugees from the Middle East about their oral health needs and service use, data
collection in final stages
• 2 Honours students at Adelaide to undertake interviews with service providers and refugees who
indicated their willingness to be interviewed.
Regional settlement of refugees

• FUSA faculty grant with Lillian Mwanri and Melanie Baak (UniSA) examining the regional resettlement
experiences of refugees in Mount Gambier
• 40 interviews with refugees from Democratic Republic of Congo and Myanmar/Burma
• Presented the results at the Regional Motilities Conference in Mount Gambier in September 2017, this
was covered by the local newspaper
• Conference report which will shortly be released with findings from this project
• Will present the findings to the Migration, Ethnicity, Race and Health Congress in Edinburgh in May
• 2 articles in preparation about this research.

Regional Primary Health Organisations

• NHMRC project examining primary health organisations and health equity – with a focus on
migrant/refugee populations as one of three equity groups as part of the broader project
• Project included consultations with migrant/refugee organisations around the country and surveys and
interviews with regional primary health care organisation staff which included questions about
comprehensive PHC for refuges/migrants
• Paper presented at the Population Health Congress in Melbourne and will be presented at the
Migration, Ethnicity, Race and Health Congress in Edinburgh in May, with written paper under
preparation.

HIV in CALD populations

• FUSA faculty grant with Lillian Mwanri – with partner Relationships Australia to examine the impact of
HIV-related stigma on health and wellbeing for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse communities
• Focus groups conducted with 52 staff in 11 organisation’s/teams, 14 community leaders and 10
individuals from CALD backgrounds living with HIV
• Presented findings at a workshop of service providers in March
• Paper in preparation

Stigma and sexual health service access for CALD populations

• FUSA faculty grant – with Lillian and in partnership with Relationships Australia and SHINE building on
HIV stigma grant to include other sexual health aspects
• Completed ethics with SA health and Relationships Australia
• About to commence data collection

Migrant workers and risk of discrimination and exploitation

• FUSA Grant with Clemence Due and Alex Reilly and Joanna Howe at Adelaide Uni School of Law,
conducted in partnership with the Working Women’s Centre, Moira Walsh assisting as RA
• Project is examining workers on insecure visas and their experiences of exploitation and discrimination
• Interviews to be conducted with workers, employers and complaints personnel
• Have secured ethics approval and are about to commence recruiting people for interviews

Temporary protection visas and health for refugees:

• FUSA grant with Clemence Due to examine the impact of temporary visas on health and wellbeing for
refugees and asylum seekers
• Survey of service providers completed and interviews about to get underway
• Formed the basis of a Linkage grant recently submitted.
Recent grants:

• Federal Department of Families and Communities: Refugee women and work. Pathways to
employment for social inclusion and health and well-being, with Alex Reilly and Joanna Howe from the
School of Law at Adelaide University and Clemence Due, $282,808. Successful

• ARC linkage: The impact of humanitarian visa type on the resettlement and health and wellbeing
outcomes for people from refugee and asylum seekers backgrounds, with Clemence Due and 7 industry
partners (Australian Refugee Council, Australian Refugee Association, Welcome to Australia, Lutheran
Community Care, St Vincent de Paul, Mercy Works, Survivors of Torture and Trauma Rehabilitation
Service), $265,223. Under review.

• Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, Canada: Toward International Refugee Food Security
Solutions, multi-country study, with Hassan Vatanparast from University of Saskatchewan and
colleagues in 10 countries. Stage 1 applied for to see if successful for stage 2. Under review.

Anna Ziersch and Clemence Due. Successful in winning a PhD scholarship and candidature but declined
as not yet ready to undertake a PhD.
• Advanced studies student Erin Green supervised by Anna Ziersch and Clemence Due for three years
looking at primary health care access for refugees and Tuc Nguyen for one year looking at refugee oral
health
• Summer Scholar Julia Parini recently worked with the group on the refugee oral health project and other
research projects relating to refugee health.

Erasmus+ KA, funded by the European Erasmus Agency, linking University of Bologna,
Flinders University and Macquarie University (funding for Phd students’ exchanges, research
staff exchange) from 2018-2020. CI Prof. Brighi UniBo

SWAPv Research Centre:


University of Bologna: Competitive University Grant for Innovative projects in the
framework of International Cooperation Agreement (€ 20.000) title “Joint Research Lab
“Student Wellbeing & Prevention of Violence”: the international dimension of social
intervention”, led by Prof. Brighi UniBo (September 2017-October 2018). This grant funding
includes a study for the validation of the Coping with Bullying and Cyberbullying
intervention package, in order to test its efficacy in combatting bullying and cyberbullying in
cultural context different from Australia. The study is ongoing and involves 20 experimental
classes from high schools from central Italy.

ARC Discovery Project: Institutional Abuse and Organisational Reform in the Australian
Defence Force 1969 - CI Ben Wadham.
This project investigates institutional abuse within the Australian Defence Force. The first
stages of the project are underway. We are forming a team, developing a 3-year plan,
allocating expertise and establishing information management processes. The project has
met with some resistance from the ADF and a 2-month process of resolution has been
underway. We are now developing a recruitment plan and generating the ethics application.

ARC Discovery Project: Sustaining Effective Educational Initiatives – CI Associate Professor

The ARC project on Sustaining Effective Educational Initiatives is moving into its second year
and the research team is busy undertaking data collection for the project. They are
conducting in-depth interviews with leaders, educators and policy/ program developers in
schools, community organizations, government departments, and NGOs. Research partners
include: Principals Australia Institute; Nature Play SA; Diabetes SA; Wilderness School; St
Michael’s School; Operation Flinders; and the Sammy D Foundation.
