Black & White Specs
Images and Scanning
When screening halftones and screens(shades of black), allow for dot gain on the press (i.e. the dot enlarges on absorbent paper).
In the highlight and shadow area, a 5-8% gain occurs and in the midtones a gain of 18-22% occurs. A highlighted dot less than
3% will appear white(blowout) and a shadow dot greater than 95% will appear solid black on press.

GRAYSCALE: 170 pixels per inch at 100% of final output size.

LINE ART/BITMAP: 600 dots per inch at 100% of final output size.
HIGHLIGHT: 0% Shadow: 95% – any Value over 95% will appear solid.

GRAYSCALE IMAGE ADJUSTMENT

For acceptable reproduction in newsprint ALL images must be adjusted to meet our press standards by applying the following
steps. Instructions on setting highlight/shadow values and applying the contrast and the basic curve can be found on the page 5.

1. Set the highlight to 0% and shadow to 95% (The highlight is an area in the subject matter of the image that should print
white-the shadow is the darkest point in the image-use the info palette to measure ink density).

2. Apply the Contrast Curve (The contrast curve is often unnecessary when the highlight and shadow have been set correctly).

3. Apply the Basic Curve to adjust for dot gain in the midtones.

Type
Sans serif type faces are the best choice for newsprint reproduction. Type faces with thin or delicate serifs and strokes, and
non-uniform character thickness, should be avoided. Extremely thin stokes can drop out in the conversion process, while
thick strokes can fill-in on the press. For best legibility, we recommend using type sized at least 7 points for black type
without a screen.

SCREENED TYPE
When screening type, avoid fine to medium weight type and use sans serif type faces. Type should be sized at least 10 points bold.

8pt Palatino - 30% black 10pt Helvetica Cond. Black - 30% black

REVERSED TYPE
To assure quality reproduction, use type sized greater than 10 points.

8pt Palatino 10pt Helvetica Cond. Black

SURPRINTED TYPE
When surprinting type over a tint, do not use a screen (background) heavier than 30%

Color Specs
Color Ads are designated as either a Process (CMYK) or Spot color (also CMYK). Pantone Matching System (PMS) colors are not
recognized in the newspaper industry. They must be translated into their CMYK equivalent and when printed on newsprint will not
match Pantone swatchbooks.

4-color image.
• All inks/colors are translucent in newsprint. This must be considered
when color elements overlap. Size and weight of type must be taken into
account when deciding to overprint or knockout. Knockout/Overprint
(Trapping) should be set per element, not to the entire document.

Spot Color Ads (are not really spot)

Spot colors in the newspaper industry are pre-defined CMYK
colors to be used in addition to black. Spot color ads are posi-
tioned and treated differently from multi-color ads. The Spot
colors listed below are the only pre-defined colors available.

PANTONE COLORS (DON’T USE THEM)
Pantone Tru Match System Colors (PMS Colors) are not rec-
ognized spot colors in the newspaper industry. A PMS color is
always translated to the CMYK equivalent. That CMYK
equivalent when printed on newsprint will not match the PMS
color as it appears in the Pantone swatchbook.
